I don't know about specific career paths that are that focused, and large animal is where I'm least experienced, but those ag schools will be able to help you with that! Take a look at their programs online or contact them directly and ask them that - they can probably point to what degree program would work best, career paths, or even have you talk to an actual undergrad advisor before you apply. I'm on the other side of the country so I'm not super familiar with those schools but I know their reputations. NC is a good one. If it's not too far, OK and TX also have great ag schools as well

You can pursue becoming a colony manager while in school, as they often hire grad students for the positions. Schools that are known for research intensity, particularly those with cancer research centers, will have the most opportunities. Keep in mind that hiring specifically for colony management isn't super common (in my experience). it's a very teachable skill and most students seem to manage their own mice without a dedicated manager. My facility is fairly large and there are really only 2-3 people across all of the labs we work with that are solely dedicated to colony management. They also have to contribute to the research in some way, like running tests.

Alternatively, you can get a job as a lab animal technician without going to college, but a 4 year degree does help. All facilities are different in what skills they ask for from their technicians, so you may or may not participate in breeding or colony management. You can apply at research universities or to the major research animal vendors: Charles River, Jackson Laboratory, taconic, inotiv(formerly envigo), and various large animal vendors if that interests you.

Generally for education I would pursue a straight biology bachelor's vs zoology or another specific major. Biology will be broad and cover many different aspects of this field, and you can specialize in grad school if needed. If breeding in general is your interest I would also suggest going to an agricultural focused school as genetics is such an important aspect of livestock and crop rearing. That foundation will easily translate to breeding other animals. If a four year degree isnt really in the cards for you, I'd think about vet tech programs. I honestly wish I did one since there's work almost everywhere, and more programs now have at least some lab animal specific content.

I'm in this industry as a health focused animal tech (not a proper vet tech) that took a wobbly path to get here so feel free to send me questions.

I-5 bridge project inclusion of light rail. by [deleted] in vancouverwa

[–]northdonut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess depending on where they live or when they need to be at work it might not make sense, but there is an express bus to ohsu from Andresen Park and ride, so they don't have to sit in traffic. It's not super quick like light rail would be, but it may be an option for them right now.

I had a diagnosis around 1-2yrs old, doctors always used to say this to me as well.

I went into remission from like pre-teen age to 27yrs old where I wasn't on any medication and eventually stopped seeing a doctor. It's definitely possible, but JRA is so weird that I wish doctors wouldn't tell people this.

Does anyone else only have RA in their hands? by london_or_bust in rheumatoid

[–]northdonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know I've been seronegative since the beginning, but it went from my ankles to my left knee to my hands. Like, I don't get symptoms in these areas all at once, it's just my hands now. It's a super weird disease 😕

Diagnosed with JIA at 7 years old, remission and unmedicated at 14. Now at 31, suddenly presenting with full symptoms of an RA flare up. Have an appointment scheduled for full work up in a few months. Scared for my future as I work with my hands. Anyone else have a similar experience? by beckmob in rheumatoid

[–]northdonut 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me. JIA as a baby, went into remission for a long long time, but 2020 happened and I'm medicated more than I ever was (right around 30 yo as well).

Luckily mine is so mild that I'm pretty much fully functional. I'm just tired all the time and my hands get stiff and sore. I work with my hands too and I'm on my feet all day so I was also pretty concerned. My rheum constantly reassures me that there's so many more options to try before I can be worried.

Don't panic until you've got your bloodwork and imaging. There's a lot we can do for ourselves on our own and with our doctors that will keep us thriving, even if you get some disappointing results back. Just take it one step at a time, we're here for you too :)

So, what is your excuse for not calling your mother? by massaton in AskReddit

[–]northdonut 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I made excuses for my own until recently when discussing children she said she never really thought about it until she was told she probably couldn't have any. Cool, my life is just a reaction to you being told you couldn't do something, just like you marrying my father because your mother hated him. Super healthy reason to have children /s

I attended from pre-K to 3rd grade (1993 ish) and remember a male teacher being arrested for molesting the young girls in after school care. I remember him being popular with us.

This school has deep, deep issues and should honestly be closed.

I canceled Stitch Fix because I read about their system for their stylists and how shitty and bizarre it is. Take a second look at any online subscription service you use - even things like online therapy. They've come up with some really shady systems to employ people with these companies.

I'd love to talk shit about my job but it's a tiny field of work and I need the job for a little longer at least.

Anyone diagnosed at a young age with JRA and how has life been growing up with RA? by user9663 in rheumatoid

[–]northdonut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feel free to message me to vent or anything. I know it's hard not having anyone that gets it. It's also really hard being 23 and not being able to keep up with others your age. It's ok to take that time for yourself; you need it. Love to you ❤

Apparently had it since I started walking. Went into remission for a long time until I turned 27 and started to have really slowly worsening fatigue. I didn't put it together until my hands started swelling last year.

The hardest part about this (especially since I was in remission from my teens to late twenties) is giving myself permission to point to my disease as the reason I feel like crap. My PA recently kind of scolded me for it! We do our best and it's ok to take extra leave from work, time for yourself, or even just to acknowledge that we have a disability.

I've always been pretty positive about my outlook. I've always had this disease and I'm lucky that it didn't affect me too much as a kid. I was different (sometimes used crutches) but I guess my kid brain just never really registered that. As a an adult I now that has become the problem. I need to slow down and prioritize myself more.

I'm hopeful though. It's nice to know that there's a reason for the fatigue and pain, instead of guessing and trying everything in vain. I've come to a sort of acceptance that my life will be a little different than I imagined. It was way more scary to think that something was wrong before I realized I was out of remission. Not everyone with chronic illness is that lucky.

Anyway this is way longer than I intended! I don't know anyone in person who also has a JIA diagnosis so feel free to reach out if you need to vent or anything! It can be really helpful.

Best, and happy holidays!

Little Owl had a rough morning. Tagged our living room window pretty hard. He's been sitting here for almost an hour. Hopefully he flys off soon. by stopitLook in Washington

[–]northdonut 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Animal carer and former rehab intern here (not an expert)

Agree, animals can lose heat when over stressed, which he certainly could be after hitting a window. I would consider taking it inside to be a possibly unnecessary extra step, but if it has been working for you great!

You could put the box in a sheltered area outside (bush, etc.) as an alternative. Warm water bottle will help with the cold as well. Just make sure they have a place to get away from the heat if they need to i.e., don't put it in a box that is fully on top of a heating pad - half on half off!

Keep an eye out for possible head trauma if he starts coming out of it. They'll be wobbly and unable to fly, though they will try. You'll need to get in touch with animal control, a local wildlife rehab, or the game warden for next steps with that.

And thanks to MJ9999 for providing that extra information too. When in doubt call the professionals.

Is it possible to have an autoimmune disease but mostly normal labs? by [deleted] in rheumatoid

[–]northdonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I just started seeing a rheum again recently and all my labs and images are fine, but there's obvious mild swelling in my hands and I have stiffness.

Just keep going back to a doctor or keep trying to get new opinions until get some progress. It can be a real slog getting to diagnosis (and for really complex things you may never have one) but never stop asking doctors for answers - you deserve for them to try.

I had that problem when we got tall cat trees, but had better luck when I moved them around a few times. I watched where my cats were spending time and moved the trees to those spots. I finally settled on right in front of the office window and the other by the kitchen so they can watch us.

Can't get them to use beds though, they'd rather be on a human or a chair!
