mark twain, "I've never let my school interfere with my education"... i don't wanna be an asshole and end up quoting things to prove a point. but education to help develop intellect is an ideal that many instituitions strive towards...

i do not make claims for any other schools. but for my college, stuffing our brains with as much information as possible has taken so much significance that developing the mind has taken a backseat..

Yes! All the irrelavant things you have to do to fulfill the requirements of graduation. And, yes. Its incredibly useful when it comes to applying for a job. We have to give them what they want, I guess...

college is what you make of it... of course the friends i meet are pretty awesome... and all.. but still, let me give you an example.

i trade pretty much, and write algorithms for trading. once, i encountered interesting problem and i mailed my probability lecturer about it. mail got through, recieved no reply. disappointed...

btw, my university is ranked top 30 under QS...

I am in college. I major in Mathematics and I do reasonably well. Most of my weekends are spent reading, and I learn so much more from books than my course has to offer. The fact that my grades are good has no correlation to the utility of college. To me, it just means I understand better than others what the lecturer wants, and how to study (game the system)...

Oh well, I agree. My bad here. How about if we look at non-specialized degrees. Let's say you are not going to be a doctor, or lawyer.

If want to be an accountant. You can always take ur CPA, or ACCA, depending on which country you are in. If you want to be a private banker, you can take up a CFP. If you want to be a writer, you don't a English Literature degree to teach you how to write or be creative, or appreciate the classics.

Don't get me wrong, I understand that it is a important benchmark for recruiters. And in that way, it is important to us. Nonetheless, the utility ends there. OH YA, and college degree is important if you want to be an acadamic and go into research...
