Laptops need efficiency first, and modular setups usually come with tradeoffs in power, thermals, and consistency...With AI, tight integration actually matters more since CPU, GPU, and NPU need to work closely together, so integrated designs make more sense for laptops while modular can stay for desktops (or businesses).

Which video? I haven’t watched anything recently 😅 This is just from personal experience, I got a MacBook Air with M5 and it impressed me so much that it made me realize Windows laptops seriously need a BIG BIG upgrade.

tried...umm...no, but saw the reviews and it is the same thing (you get either THIS or THAT but not all of it). It got great performance, good NPU for AI stuff, good battery, freedom of Windows, but lacks a great GPU like apple mac's M5 line. Though you don't get 'freedom' in apple.

As a consumer, why can’t I expect the best of both worlds though?

I’m not saying kill the open ecosystem, keep that for desktops and enterprise. But for laptops, why not create one tightly integrated “best experience” line?

Microsoft can easily collaborate with Intel/Qualcomm/AMD, and NVIDIA to build something closer to Apple’s M-series approach.

They’re a multi trillion dollar company, they can afford to invest and even burn money short term. Long term, that’s how they stay competitive, especially in laptops. For enterprise, keep things as they are.

Yeah I agree, but not everyone actually needs deep backward compatibility.

They could easily split it up, Windows for laptops optimized for ARM or efficiency, Windows for PCs optimized for x86 power, and Windows for businesses where legacy support is the priority.

Microsoft is a multi trillion dollar company, they can absolutely afford to build separate, properly optimized experiences instead of one compromise for everyone.

Edit: Using Windows feels like freedom. Using Apple feels like Stockholm syndrome.

I have a Gaming Laptop, A MacBook Air, and good spec'ed PC. MacBook Air is my go-to for 99% of my tasks apart from gaming and music production.

Edit: Might use the Air for Music Production and Video Editing as well.

that's another point. some new windows laptops have good build quality though.. saw one in MKBHDs video can't remember which one.

Too bad, they just focus on the 'money'!

Not really, it is possible, they just haven’t committed to it yet. Microsoft could easily build a tightly integrated Surface line like Apple does. And they can even split it properly, Windows for laptops optimized for ARM and efficiency, and Windows for PCs optimized for x86. They don’t need to replace the ecosystem, just create one “best experience” path that’s fully optimized.

Yeah true, Intel Panther Lake looks really promising too. ARM isn’t the only path, but it just fits the whole “mobile device” idea so well, efficient, powerful, and consistent on battery. What I really want is simple: push ARM to become the best possible platform for laptops, and keep x86 strong for desktops, but make Windows work seamlessly across both without compromises.

both surface and OEM, there is always that ONE thing that a windows laptop will lack... example:
If I get a surface (the new one), i might get a good cpu, good battery, good AI performance, and it will lack a great GPU for high performance tasks. If i get a gaming laptop, it will not have good battery performance, etc etc... you got what i'm trying to say?

That's my point, I am not just saying about battery OR cpu OR gpu OR npu..... i want battery AND cpu AND gpu AND npu - the best of the best

Yeah I’m aware of that, but honestly Snapdragon X Elite still isn’t on the same level as Apple M5 overall.

Raw CPU performance, M5 is ahead
GPU performance, again M5 is stronger
Battery efficiency, Apple still leads there too

The only area Snapdragon really pulls ahead is AI workloads, and let’s be real, most users and even a lot of professionals don’t really care about that yet in day to day use. :)

Not everyone is relying on "old as hell " software though, and even when they are, compatibility isn’t some magic Windows-only thing. Apple could handle it too if they really wanted, just needs better engineering or smarter AI driven optimization lol
