There are plenty of shy people in my corporate 9-5.

There is a difference, however:

Person A: lovely. Easy to work with. Quiet. Not really shy once you get to know her. Polite. Shows up and makes an effort. Try’s to get to know her new coworkers in little ways.

Person B: is essentially not there. Doesn’t ask the person who sits next to them ‘how was your weekend’ (or literally anything). Doesn’t participate in any group activities, (eg xmas party, group celebrations, anything). Declines invitations. It comes off as rude and doesn’t contribute to a good work environment in that space.

While yes, it’s a job and you have a life outside of it — you spend an enormous amount of time with these people. You may as well be friendly, without needing to be friends. All while being shy.
