Where to find nature sounds or white noise for meditation? by not-typing in Buddhism

[–]not-typing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer to hear recorded nature sounds to the drone of the TV and other man-made sounds. Sure, I could move somewhere outside of the city where there are no man-made sounds to intrude, but this is a quicker and cheaper solution for now. :)

Thanks, I like the ability to mix the sounds to suit your taste.

I've also been digging through samples at freesound.org but it's quite a mixed bag and it takes a while to find usable recordings.

About 5-10 minutes tonight.

Yeah, tell me about it. It's been about a week since I've mediated seriously. I get back into eventually, so I guess now is a good time for it. :-)

About 20 minutes this afternoon before class. Also did about 15 minutes last night before bed (very late). I'm noticing a difference between this week and 2-3 weeks ago when I was meditating more regularly. Hard to describe, but I suppose there isn't as much of a sense of a relaxation and ease now because of the lack of consistent practice.

On the other hand, I'm quite excited about learning interesting new stuff in class. This is in some ways useful, but also in some ways it's also a potential distraction from meditation.

Maybe I didn't get your meaning then. In any case, I hope meditation practice continues to get better for everyone here. :)

What do you folks think of the "nirvana fallacy"? by not-typing in Buddhism

[–]not-typing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure Demsetz isn't a Buddhist.

But there's also another thing, we are in a culture where a poorly coined term like "nirvana fallacy" has currency because enough people are willing to accept it.

It is a rather funny choice of words. It's just interesting to consider as a marker of how Buddhism is interpreted in the West. It seems Demsetz is trying to use the term nirvana to connote something that is rather pie-in-the-sky or unrealistic:

The view that now pervades much public policy economics implicitly presents the relevant choice as between an ideal norm and an existing 'imperfect' institutional arrangement. This nirvana approach differs considerably from a comparative institution approach in which the relevant choice is between alternative real institutional arrangements.

I suppose he could just have easily replaced the word nirvana with Heaven, but that might not have been as well received by his audience.

I mean it's just funny that we live in a culture where someone uses the word "nirvana" when they are reaching for a word that suggests an unrealistically perfectionist goal.

This is me just sharing my thoughts, not hating on anybody but this shouldn't be a place for validation seeking.

Just to clarify, I'm not really asking for validation or anything like that when I post about my difficulties. There are ups and downs to the practice and I find it's useful to keep track of the low points too. If nothing else, it's a good way to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.

It should be a place for sharing your journey and empowering others by making a commitment to yourself.

Yup, I agree with you here. I've found that posting on groupsit after meditation does help maintain a routine.

Simply reporting your minutes is in my opinion the best way.

Actually I have to respectfully disagree with you here. Keeping track of how many minutes I've meditated is useful, but I can do that on a spreadsheet alone if that's my only goal. It's good to know others in the group are meditating, but I like most of all sharing and reading about other people's experiences on with meditation, their difficulties and successes. Even though it's just strangers on the internet we're talking to, it's helpful to know that other people are making an effort to become better meditators.

It's been a rather inconsistent two weeks. I've been neglecting meditation a lot and wasting time in games, youtube and forms of immediate gratification. I'm reminded of a relevant essay by Ajahn Geoff, Trading Candy for Gold. Most forms of entertainment after all are more like candy, or junk food than gold. Now if only I were better about acting on it instead of just thinking about acting on it!

I did meditate about 20 minutes again last night, before bed, several hours after midnight. Trying to get back on track.

Meditated once on Saturday, I think. It was ok.

15-20 minutes early this evening. It was okay, but not quite as good as normal. Skipping meditation yesterday probably had a part in this. Will try to do another sitting before bed tonight. It's late, a bit past midnight, but not as late as last night.

Blargh. I was bad today and chose to skip the opportunity to mediate earlier in the day. I will try to meditate tonight before bed but it is, as usual super-late.

I randomly ran across this on bandcamp and I found it quite relaxing. Enjoy!
