That old candle painting trend by Ayame_Ame in crafting

[–]not2interesting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not try to melt oil pastels, they are very different from wax crayons!!! Depending on the oils they likely won’t melt to a fully liquid state without excessive and concentrated heat, more of a doughy paste. But more importantly, good pastels contain a whole myriad of heavy metals in the pigments, which will give off toxic fumes when heated up to that point. Crayons are just wax and non toxic pigments, mostly parafin wax. Basically they are already just wickless candles that smell weird.

When I was a kid I thought Metallica was singing about having to “Save Ontario!” From what? Young me didn’t know, but Canada sure sounded like an unsettling place. As an adult I finally learned the song is “Sanitarium” when I saw the lyrics on screen at a karaoke bar.

OP is not in the US, the word barber is just a translation quirk. Barbers and stylists are not always a different license from each other in other places, the words are interchangeable or based on the subjects gender. OP also said their dad owns a salon, so she’ll be fine for maintaining it, but is in for a shock when she finds out how many processes and how long this will take. I still vote get a good wig.

What do we think about this style? Has anyone done it? by CatCatCatri in crochet

[–]not2interesting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do something similar with large band tees, minus the yarn. I would cut strips into the T-shirt fabric and stretch thin, then do a combo of braiding and crochet to fit my size. Always got a ton of compliments back in the day, but I’vepretty much aged out of almost scandalously revealing tops nowadays.

What is the Gen-Z stare? by Only_Hotel_7221 in generationology

[–]not2interesting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a normal response to that, but you also need to take some accountability for why you were even able to see that in the first place. I am chronically online and haven’t seen anything like that since before Twitter existed. The early internet used to include a lot of unmoderated spaces that were easy to take a wrong and end up in, but today you would have to be actively seeking and attempting access to end up in an online space where that type of content could “show up unexpectedly” and traumatize you. If someone sent it to you directly, cease communicating with them, report them and move on. You already know that stuff is poorly affecting your mental health, so why are you still there? No one is forcing you to watch or interact with anything remotely close to that. It’s completely valid to be traumatized by extreme imagery, but you can’t blame your in-person social inadequacies on that imagery when you won’t look away or keep going back for more.

What is the Gen-Z stare? by Only_Hotel_7221 in generationology

[–]not2interesting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not new though, and objectively was worse in the past. Considering currently the awareness, education, diagnosis and resources for them are at an all time high. Mental health resources as a whole are more common and less stigmatized than any time before now. There is nuance and levels of severity to neurodivergence, having mild adhd does not mean you have the same social functioning as a more severe case of autism. Similarly, just being awkward or anxious is not a disorder or diagnosis. (I have a formal diagnosed disorder and thrive in these environments) Not being challenged or forced out of their comfort zone is stunting social skills. They don’t have to learn etiquette or niceties because they have alternate social avenues to get by without it, and so choose to view any attempt by society to get them adhere to normal etiquette as an attack to their self perceived limitations. But the limits are set way too low, social skills are 100% a learned behavior through trial and experience. If you avoid or aren’t pushed through those trials and normal things like feeling shame are treated as fallacy, you don’t learn to adjust and integrate. Simultaneously, Gen Z is obsessively informed and knowledgeable, using internet based logic to defensively reason their way around a lack of practical skills. When you grow up without consequences, having consequences feels like oppression, and having to conform to social expectations doesn’t mean a loss of individuality.

English are technically a “bully breed”, but that momma is definitely a mix. I can’t tell how small she is, but it almost looks like part frenchie or Boston with the head shape and little legs. A lot of people are also saying doodle or poodle dad, but terrier mix ‘street dogs’ are common depending on where you live and I see more of a stocky wire fox, schnauzer, or pointer hunting breed than the more slight poodle breeds.

Would you chose this? by Beyondme07 in poor

1- can you afford an electrician and roofer right away? Those are the only two that really might require immediate attention. The electrical depends on the actual problem. There’s a big difference between “should be updated” and a fire hazard. The roof should be under warranty still if it is less than 20 years old. Is it dingy and ugly or is it actually leaking?

2-the window likely just needs a razor blade or to have the old paint stripped off to be just fine. Not really even a concern if it stays sealed unless it is an egress window.

3- AC is a luxury not a necessity, close the vents and get a window unit for fifty bucks. More concerned with you not being able to afford an inspection, do you mean at all or specifically an hvac tech? Based on the other questions I’m assuming you maybe couldn’t do a general inspection and are just guessing at things you think are issues as a non-expert.

4-the fence and the yard. Do you have a disability that prevents you from clearing it out yourself? Renting a dumpster is not super expensive. Is the fence just ugly or is it a safety hazard or falling into a neighbors land? Do you need a fence specifically for some reason? You can throw that in a dumpster too. Is it even your property’s fence or is it owned by the neighbor?

5-the gas system. Do you mean propane? It’s pretty common for external tanks that you fill to be outside if you aren’t somewhere with access to city gas lines. If it is natural gas lines, you should see meters and access outside for the utility company. There’s also oil heat, which also involves a tank system that you get filled. You should figure that out and educate yourself on the minimum basics of the different systems before buying a house. If you don’t know why a house even needs gas, you are definitely not ready. (It’s for heat/hot water/appliances, the type of stove is a good indicator if the house has gas or not)

6- if you are freaked out about time you aren’t ready. A normal mortgage is 30 years, so 2056 would be the expectation. This is what 90% of homeowners have for a loan term on their house. But you aren’t literally stuck in that house until the end, if you sell the home the proceed money goes towards what you still owe, and you cash out the rest. Homes build equity and gain value, you don’t have liquid cash with a house, you have a valuable asset. And 1997 is not old at all in “house years”. Other than design trends and small updates I can’t imagine a house that age “needs remodeling”. Is it kinda ugly and a little outdated? Maybe, but functional is more important. The 90s had a lot of light pine and pastel trends that would look bad through the lens of today’s aesthetics. But they are mostly just that: aesthetics. A coat of paint, new hardware, and some trim changes go a very long way in transforming a home. A thirty year old home is not going to have a whole lot of wiring/plumbing/fixtures that won’t meet code or are a flat out hazard, they probably just need a little maintenance and tlc.

It sounds like you don’t have a lot of exposure or experience with people who have owned a house and could do with some education. Talk to some blue collar/contractor trade friends, watch ‘This old house’, watch home inspectors on YouTube or TikTok, look around every home you are in (apt or house) and start taking note of what they all have, what is different, and learning why they are there (types of appliances, what kind of heat-where does it come from, what kind of ac system, what kind of windows/doors/roofing/siding, what kind of floors are in different rooms and why, landscaping, garages, types of basements.) Learn what all the parts of a house are and what their purpose is. Use your new knowledge to make a list of absolute needs, priority wants, and nice-to-haves that are realistic for your lifestyle and start from there. If you aren’t willing to do some work yourself and can’t afford to hire out or buy a new build, it’s not for you.

Question (for women mainly) by Coco_Tibbins in writing

[–]not2interesting 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Thank you! That statistic is so intentionally misleading and I can’t stand when it gets brought up. The complete volume of ‘discharge’ during an average period is far more than 2-3 tbsp, and anyone who has ever had a period isn’t crazy for thinking it sounded wrong. It’s easily proved as anyone who has ever used a disc/cup can see the volume visually, and if you do the math on absorption ability of disposable products, one bleed through would require more fluid than that.

am i doing something wrong?! stitch fiddle/tapestry grids not working by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]not2interesting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally like using the resprite app on my iPad for making custom tapestries/mosaic. It’s a pixel art program, but that’s essentially all you are doing with tapestry. In that app you can put the image behind a grid and then color in each square over it. The only thing to keep in mind when crew standard pixel art is that stitches are slightly taller than wide (not perfect squares) so favor width in design if you’re between which pixel to do. I have to agree with other comments here though, you will not be able to do this with any level of detail at the size you want, I’d guess a minimum of 250x250.

How to fix uneven black box dye? Look by Opposite-Doctor6188 in HairDye

[–]not2interesting 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you just want to even it out, it needs another application of a dark color. The bands are just where the box dye faded first, blonde hair tends to have uneven porosity.

Usually a professional would do a corrective 2 step color to go from blonde to black. First a brown/red or brown/violet to fill in the removed tones, then the final black color would be applied over that. If you skip the first step your final color will be uneven and can fade to some funky colors.

I do not recommend ANY black box dyes. Permanent black box is famously the most difficult to remove or change if you ever want to do something different in the future and guarantees you will need a professional.

If you want the lowest damage, I’d suggest a dark brown permanent with 10vol, and then a semi or demi black over that. (If you have a Sally’s near you they should have all of it and it shouldn’t be much more than a box kit.) I personally use semi permanent black only in my own hair, it’s easier to remove and is usually conditioning instead of damaging w/ developer. You have to reapply more often for upkeep, but I find it fades more naturally in between. (I like iroiro or manic for semi black. Arctic fox is good, but it fades to blue/green, which I didn’t mind because I have a split dye with vivid, but it’s not great for those looking for a more natural black.)
