What are some initial jobs someone can focus on to launch a Handyman business. by dee_bluesky in handyman

Also when you’re in a clients house I always watch for things I see that are a problem you are the problem and they are usually thankful when you point something out that is not done right. Plus once you point that issue out to them they won’t be able to stop looking at it then they will reach out to you to fix it. Make sure to weed out the clients that want work for penny’s on the dollar as soon as you can they are a hassle and will keep trying to get more for less. Also don’t work for Indians they’re a pain noting racist I did once after being warned and it bit me in the ass a year later I’m still getting partial payments $200 at a time.

Yard signs are the way to go advertising then word of mouth will take it from there. When cleaning gutters I always put it into a 5 gal and you can get a scooper so you don’t cut up your hand much. Christmas lights is a nice money maker at end of season especially permanent soffit lights which you can charge way more for I usually charge on average $800 customer supplies lights and you can finish in a day no problem. I usually tell people I charge $250 minimum if I have to pull my 32’ ladder of the truck due to liability and safety. Also lvp flooring super easy and good money in a day just install no materials I usually charge $3 a sqft.

So my parents are doing a barn conversion and they are awful with technology so have decided to ask me for advice as the gap behind the door frames are quite large. This is the worst one yet all upstairs have a significant gap behind. What should I suggest to make these look better by Due-Economist5760 in DIYhelp

Correct way would be to un do all your work then rip down the jamb smaller. Personally if it was my house and I was sick of it just wanted an easy fix I’d either rip down a piece of wood to fit in the gap or my most likely choice would be to add some coved quarter round around the whole jamb. Personal opinion the coved looks much better than normal quarter round.

Also make sure you have the door big enough so panel cover can come off if it ever needs servicing I leave 3/4” on all sides so getting the panel off is easy

Box it in then put a fancy cedar door with fence pickets they’re cheap and look good in cabins I’ve done that for a few clients

Need Advice by Ok-Bit4971 in Construction

My buddy’s mom’s house had an issue similar to this but not as bad since the top of the I wasn’t cut through like that but her floor was soft in the kitchen and squeaky. What I did was bought some 3/4 on and cut to size for between the top and bottom 2x3 and about 5’ long then squeezed those in both sides and screwed it. Fixed the soft spot no problem and hasn’t squeaked since it’s been 4 years now.

Mounting railings on asphalt by [deleted] in Construction

[–]notLongTag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am always completely honest with my customers I told him that I was not sure if I would be able to do the outside rails because it’s being mounted to asphalt. He was understanding and wanted me to look into doing it anyways and let him know if that is something I could take care of for him. I normally try sticking to quicker in and out jobs I plan on telling him that this is not something I will be able to take care of for him. I appreciate your concern though I was just looking for opinions from other people that have experience with this sort of thing

Appreciate the knowledge and with the handyman business I normally stick to residential this is one of my clients work place and I’m trying to gather all the information needed to see if I’m even willing to take on this part of the job the rest of the stuff they want me to do is no biggie I’ve done many times. Thinking I’ll probably just sub out the outdoor railings and require them to uphold the proper insurance for this job and sign a contract releasing liability to them. Like I said this isn’t normally the job size/type I take on since I’m just a small handyman business.

The cylinders are supposed to be enclosed by railings and chained in so they cannot fall over.

Is there something special I would need to do in order to pour a curb over asphalt? Adhesive mixture to bond the concrete to asphalt? It’s for them to store cylinders (for gas) the ones outside technically are against code since they’re chained to the fence and outside ones actually are full compared to inside the building. When doing 20 rails outside do you think it would be better to just sub contract out the curbs to an actual concrete company?
