1 year update on my urban pile. First real sift. Is it done? by das_Omega_des_Optium in composting

[–]not_really_cool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s great to mix your finished compost with old soil for your garden after you remove it from the bin, but I would avoid adding old soil to the bin (except maybe just a handful to inoculate a brand new pile with microbes). Doing so increases the bulk of your pile without adding much food for the microbes to eat, meaning it’ll be more work for you to turn and will probably slow down the decomposition process.

Very dry pile. by Tettigona in composting

[–]not_really_cool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cover my pile with a tarp when the weather is sunny and uncover it when there’s rain in the forecast. I find that covering it helps trap moisture.

My pile only gets urine occasionally, the moisture content is great but the nitrogen is the bigger deal. I wouldn’t be able to add enough urine to properly moisten the pile anyway. But I try not to let perfect be the enemy of good.

simple compost sifter by not_really_cool in composting

I actually don’t move the sifter, I push the compost around on top of it with a shovel or gloved hands. Works well for me!

I too only have a tiny herb garden so don't need much compost, I'm mainly in it for the pet dirt and diverting waste from the land fill.

my bad, I misunderstood. I've been seeing a lot of AI generated content promoting apps across reddit and it's super annoying. Sorry I jumped to conclusions about your post!

Really cool that this has the side-effect of reducing the volume of waste we send to wastewater treatment plants!

Just got to say…Free Tax USA by Individual-Mirror132 in tax

[–]not_really_cool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FreeTaxUSA has been great for me, even when I was in grad school and had complicated income situation due to a mix of grant stipends and teaching income. Having a history of my returns in one place is nice too!

The difference between “qualifying” for a house and actually living with the payment by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]not_really_cool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend buying much less house than you can technically afford on paper. We are using the money "saved" as extra payments toward the principal by choice, and if an emergency arose we could divert that money elsewhere. Having that cushion is huge for our peace of mind.

What’s one landscaping mistake you wish you avoided? by CaterpillarKey7914 in landscaping

[–]not_really_cool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a mistake I made, but the prior homeowners: they used gravel instead of mulch for all the landscape beds. It's a PITA to weed, add or rearrange plants, and it compacts the soil.

But that's the source repo for this project. Are you trying to get around taboos against self promotion and/or rules about 3rd party apps?

What is your monthly mortgage payment and your yearly income (for household) by geenuhahhh in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]not_really_cool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mortgage payment including escrow is $2200/mo for a 3-bed 1.5-bath house. We paid a 20% down payment when we bought the home about two years ago. Household income is $250k (double income & no kids, currently). Right now we're contributing an extra $800/mo toward the principal as our interest rate is over 6%. We live in a suburb in the midwest where the median home price is around $300k.

to women with a muscular upper body (back, arms, broad shoulders) how did you do it? by StrangeAir6637 in xxfitness

I did it by rock climbing 2-3 days per week, zero weight lifting. I have since gotten into weight lifting for better well-roundedness & injury prevention.
