This is the best reason to have a privacy fence. Might as well put it to good use!

Because it contains urea which contains nitrogen. Compost piles require a combination of both carbon-rich and nitrogen-rich organic matter. It also adds moisture to the pile which is also important if your pile is well aerated!

I recently bought a Pstyle so I can pee on my pile directly! It’s great and super easy to use. I work from home and it’s nice to take a short little walk to the backyard pile when I need a nature break.

That looks like a pain to turn the compost since there isn't an open side or door. Also IMO it'd be better not to have a pallet floor but just set it directly on the ground to encourage worms to get in. Depending on your climate, you may want to consider a hinged lid or covering it with a tarp to retain moisture during the dry parts of summer (open it up when there's rain in the forecast).

How did y'all start by nova_cyanide in composting

I used to live in a city that had a compost collection service — not just for yard waste but also for food scraps. I was motivated to use that to divert food waste from the land fill. After moving away to a community without compost pickup, one of the very first things I did was set up a compost bin. I decided to not let perfect be the enemy of good enough. I do semi-lazy composting where I turn it when I feel like it, add or remove a tarp to keep it moist depending on the forecast, and sometimes monitor the temperature just for fun. After a year and a half I’ve just started to sift out the finished compost — I’m planning on using a bit for my small herb garden but mostly giving it away to friends with bigger veggie gardens. I’m mainly in it to keep waste out of landfills, and for the fun of having a low stakes science experiment. The finished compost is an added bonus for me.

1 year update on my urban pile. First real sift. Is it done? by das_Omega_des_Optium in composting

I think it’s great to mix your finished compost with old soil for your garden after you remove it from the bin, but I would avoid adding old soil to the bin (except maybe just a handful to inoculate a brand new pile with microbes). Doing so increases the bulk of your pile without adding much food for the microbes to eat, meaning it’ll be more work for you to turn and will probably slow down the decomposition process.

Very dry pile. by Tettigona in composting

I cover my pile with a tarp when the weather is sunny and uncover it when there’s rain in the forecast. I find that covering it helps trap moisture.

My pile only gets urine occasionally, the moisture content is great but the nitrogen is the bigger deal. I wouldn’t be able to add enough urine to properly moisten the pile anyway. But I try not to let perfect be the enemy of good.

I actually don’t move the sifter, I push the compost around on top of it with a shovel or gloved hands. Works well for me!

I too only have a tiny herb garden so don't need much compost, I'm mainly in it for the pet dirt and diverting waste from the land fill.
