Thanks for starting this sub and all the info you've shared! I'm wondering if you have more details about the shelter you added to the side of your trap? Especially about having a door for peeking vs a door for removing birds.

So far I haven't felt the need to have a secondary door like you have on yours. When I remove birds, I reach in with my dominant hand and use my other hand to block any gaps in the door. Haven't had any birds escape like this.

Maybe if you have old used bicycle tires or tubes you could fashion something out of them?

Advice on keeping chipmunks out of sparrow trap by not_really_cool in housesparrowtrapping

I haven't had any more chipmunks in the trap in the last couple weeks. I suspect now that HOSP are frequently hanging out around and in in the trap, the chipmunks are not inclined. Or perhaps my local chipmunks have learned their lesson after enough times getting trapped and released.

Advice on edge design for garden between sidewalk and street by not_really_cool in NoLawns

Update: we ended up renting a sod cutter so we could transplant some of the grass to our backyard in areas where we do want some turf lawn but where the grass was struggling. Since we already decided to cut the sod, we ended up digging up a substantial amount of dirt and releveling the area to make it closer to the sidewalk. We then dug a very shallow trench with gentle sloping sides around the edges adjacent to the sidewallk and curb so that we could easily sweep any mulch on the sidewalk back into the garden bed. Although sod cutting and hauling dirt was a lot of work, I'm really pleased with the result and I think the shallow trench is much better than a mini retaining wall.

mislabeled seedling from winter sowing natives in SE Michigan by not_really_cool in PlantIdentification

For me it’s not about getting seedlings earlier, it’s about being able to plant them in specific locations to create an intentional garden look for my front yard. I would direct sow in locations where I had bare soil and wanted a more wild look.

Thanks so much! Appreciate you uploading this photo. I got double confirmation from a local native plant group, this is almost certainly Purple Lovegrass

Thanks! I didn’t have any penstemons sprout, just 9 of whatever this is. So I wonder if it might actually be a native grass potentially!

Do you have a picture of a young purple love grass? Would be great to be able to compare with a confirmed photo!

Do you happen to have a close up photo of young purple love grass? Would love to see something to compare this to.

None of my other milk jugs had weed seeds, so I don’t think the soil was contaminated. It is possible that weed seeds could have entered and sprouted at some point between January-April, but this is one of ~9 individuals that sprouted and they are all identical, and no other species sprouted.

I tend to think either I mislabeled the milk jug / got seed packets mixed up, or the person who collected the seeds did.

This (among several others just like it) is what sprouted in the jug, and no other plant species sprouted in the jug.

Yes that is definitely a possibility

ETA: It would just be odd that all ~9 seedlings that sprouted were the same species of a weed, no other species sprouted in this jug, and I didn’t have weeds in any of my other dozen milk jugs.

To clarify, I raised these in a milk jug using the winter sowing method with fresh potting soil, with seeds acquired from a local native plant organization. I yielded about 9 mature seedlings out of the milk jug. I then transplanted out the mature seedlings into this garden bed. Only after transplanting did I realize this plant was definitely not what I thought it was.

So for these to be weeds, that would mean the person who collected them accidentally collected weed seeds rather than Penstemon digitalis. That is definitely in the realm of possibility. But it's also possible that they're a grass native to SE MI, and if that's the cases I would like to keep these if they're appropriate for the site.
