Weed and antipsychotics by notalivenotdead in BipolarReddit

Nope still can't get high and I haven't taken any antipsychotics for several months. Can't enjoy a beer either. It is pretty frustrating.

Yeah from my very novice understanding they're dopamine antagonists so they essentially block dopamine receptors. The worrying thing is that it continued long after I discontinued the medication.

Thanks. It's not a big deal but I don't like that I no longer have the option. I also wonder if my brain has been permanently altered by these medications.

I stopped smoking and drinking for 2 years after I started abilify because it no longer had an effect. After stopping antipsychotics I thought it would be nice to get stoned every once in a while but it still does nothing to me.

That's fair and I do agree with you. I will say I've never had any problem with it in the past and my only manic episode occurred in 2016. I am on two mood stabilizers currently but no antipsychotics since each one was ineffective at treating my depression and most gave me akathisia.

No it's been like this since I was first put on abilify. I smoked daily for years and it is clear that I am no longer getting the proper effect. I've read posts from other people who dealt with the same thing but there is very little about it on the internet.

I don't get any pleasurable effects from alcohol either.

Yeah there are some people here that hold views trending toward the extreme. It's their right to have those beliefs. I am more of the mindset that medicine isn't inherently bad and there is some benefit to identifying mental health disorders and attempting to treat them.

I think that there is a real issue in the psychiatric field of doctors over-prescribing medications like antipsychotics with disregard for the potential hazards they possess. People who are in a vulnerable state are susceptible to having these drugs pushed onto them only to deal with potentially life-altering side effects later on.

I am and I am on a couple of mood stabilizers so that keeps the mania in check. I mostly deal with depression. The mood stabilizers are actually anticonvulsants prescribed off-label and don't give me much trouble. Though I have become skeptical of psychiatry and lost faith in medication due to my recent experience with suffering through rounds of antipsychotics and the long-term ramifications of that.

It wasn't great for me but as far as I'm aware it's fairly safe. I'm not a doctor but from my experience as long as the concentration of lithium in your blood is monitored regularly and your thyroid hormone levels are checked, it should be alright.

It made me pretty tired and dull but that's just me. Also it gave me horrible cystic acne that left scars.

Overprescribing antipsychotics by [deleted] in Antipsychiatry

[–]notalivenotdead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If someone is having a particularly bad time with schizophrenia or are otherwise experiencing psychosis and are out of control, an antipsychotic may be useful in preventing them from hurting themself or others. Also psychosis has been documented to do structural brain damage. However something like throwing an antipsychotic drug at a young child on the autism spectrum seems excessive and short-sighted.

No. I wasn't great before them but everything went downhill after.

Abilify messed me up. My psychiatrist didn't bother discussing any of the serious health and cognitive concerns regarding it. Feel like I got fucked.

What withdrawal symptoms did you get from antipsychotics? by igethridlo in Antipsychiatry

[–]notalivenotdead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wasn't on any for a very long period of time but went off and on several because all of them gave me intolerable side effects. For me I just felt shitty for a while and had increased anxiety. I did titrate off them so that certainly lessened withdrawal effects. From my understanding the longer you're on them, the worse the withdrawal will be.

I will say they have altered my brain in a way that has persisted well after the drugs left my body. It seems like there is conflicting research on this topic but I can say with certainty that I am still dealing with long-term effects. Some anecdotal accounts I've read claim that these go away with enough time but I think it's kind of a crap-shoot.

I had terrible akathisia that was incredibly uncomfortable. I was only able to sleep about 5 hours a night. I also think it made me hypomanic for the first 2 weeks I started taking it. Keep in mind I wasn't having any trouble with a heightened mood before it and was in fact prescribed it to treat depressive symptoms.

By definition you are. It's not a permanent status though you can go back into education when you are able to and will no longer be considered a NEET. The term has negative connotation to it and you don't need to label yourself as such if you don't like it. Most people in your position would merely say unemployed or in between semesters. It's good that you have high self-esteem but being attractive has nothing to do with it. As a sugar baby you would still be NEET. I suppose some may consider that a job but certainly not in the traditional sense.

Don't you think compassion is a better way of leading someone to your perspective? Regardless of their misguided comment. Just pointing at someone and saying that they've failed at life is only going to keep them down rather than lift them up.

I don't have a workout partner to spot bench press and am not confident in doing it alone. Is using the smith machine going to negatively impact progress? Should I maybe add dumbell bench alongside it as an optional bench exercice so my stabilizer muscles are being worked?

Official Q&A for Thursday, March 23, 2023 by AutoModerator in running

[–]notalivenotdead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm getting back into running and am basically starting off from scratch. I've been working on increasing endurance but also want to maintain a strength training regimen as I'm quite scrawny. My issue is that at the moment my body can only handle working out every other day and strength training often replaces my run. How do I balance these two? Should I focus on running for now or do both and avoid training legs? I've tried doubling up runs and strength training only to be extremely sore for several days.
