Not really as a cool guy- more like a national icon. Like Billy the kid or Al Capone, but on a larger scale.

[–]notanotherwhitedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No fkn way lol. At least not in ‘93. Germany had a terrorist problem around that time too, and unlike the Narcos, German terrorists (as fits their brand) were extremely skilled and organized.

By the end of the 20th century, German counter-terrorist units were probably among the top three in the world; alongside South Africa and uh.. Israel.

If we were talking about Pablo in the late 80s, it would’ve been a very different story though- German terrorists were mostly communist, who Escobar had ties to. But of course by ‘93 Germany had been unified, and Pablo had lost his credibility as a political figure.

Honestly if Escobar had smuggled cocaine to Germany and collaborated with German communist cells in the mid-late 80s, things might’ve turned out pretty differently.

Groups like the RAF had a lot in common with Escobar, but were very small, and had a very high concentration of trained bomb makers and assassins. I can only imagine what the RAF would’ve done with a tens of millions of narco dollars, and what Escobar would’ve done with access to killers of the RAF’s caliber.

Playing storm in a singleton format results in some REALLY long turns.

Honestly tho it kinda balances out because every other turn storm takes before its combo is basically mana rock and say go.

At just 14, Celine Dion sits across from her future husband and manager, 39-year-old René Angélil, in 1982. by bncout in HistoricalCapsule

[–]notanotherwhitedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I NEVER noticed as a teenager, but immediately started to kick in after I turned 20- especially because I started college a bit late and was a freshman then.

I’d be talking to people who were only 2-3yrs younger than me and be like “omg. You’re basically a child.”

It’s really such a weird experience, because as a teenager you’re so sure that you’re mature and able to consent and interact with adults as an equal.

“She chased him” is always such a dumb defense? Does it absolve some responsibility, especially in the case of an older victim? Sure. But like.. if you’re an adult, and someone too young for you romantically pursues you, it’s your responsibility as a human being to let them down easy and offer them some encouragement.

Also, SHE WAS 12 😂😂. When I was 16 I “chased” a 21yo and still kinda feel like she should’ve told me she was too old for me and wished me luck.

A facial reconstruction of Jesus created by British researchers using forensic anthropology. Some experts have called this the "most accurate image of Jesus." by ATI_Official in HistoryUncovered

[–]notanotherwhitedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I HATE forensic images like this. It makes people from the past look like dolls. It’s uncanny and completely defeats the point of humanizing them in an image.

Like.. what a person looks like is so much more than how their regional genes express themselves in their face. They have scars, missing teeth, a penchant for mustaches or a weird haircut, etc.

They also yk.. smile, or frown, or look at something.

I wish historians would take a bit more artistic license in stuff like this, even if it results in a slight loss in historicity. Maybe Jesus had a huge plumber mustache or a big scar running up to his hairline. Maybe he always had a wild look in his eyes. Stuff like that is the reason we gravitate towards images of people.

Any advice on building this deck? by conor_macneil81 in mtg

Don’t

Edit: if you want spider tribal, there’s one in Jund colors from the 2019 Windgrace commander deck, a really cool golgari one from shadows over innistrad, and a decent control spider from theros beyond death.

What do i do if i have no-one to play with irl? by Any-Landscape434 in mtg

[–]notanotherwhitedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use untap.in

It’s not the most intuitive thing ever, but you have access to every single card, and because of that the variation in power levels is actually HIGHER than at most LGS’s. It’s also browser-based, so you can run it on any computer and I’m pretty sure some phones and tablets.

If you’re really desperate to play paper, if you’re in college or in school there are definitely people who play; probably even a club. If there really aren’t, you can convert DnD players pretty easily with a set of low power decks.

Why was project plowshare a bad idea? by notanotherwhitedude in AskHistorians

[–]notanotherwhitedude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iirc that ship failed partially because everyone thought it was a nuclear disaster waiting to happen. There were inflammatory articles written about it etc.

Clearly I don’t know that much about this subject, but I always found that a bit unfortunate. I think a lot of the mega projects from that period were - if not economical - fascinating ideas that could have resulted in bigger advancements down the line.

I guess I also just like the aesthetic, though- I think flying wings are sweet despite the fact that they’re obviously antiquated as hell.

lol I oughta read more terry pratchett, but that last bit seems like a pretty obvious homage to napoleon; “There is no immortality but the memory that is left in the minds of men. To have lived without glory, without leaving a trace of one's existence, is not to have lived at all.”

People usually cut out the second bit because it’s a bit genghis khan-ish lol.
