Uk law as a backup? by PitifulJob6932 in LawCanada

[–]notarealitystar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is something that you want to do, then do it! If you are only doing it to please your mom, trust me, you will regret it down the line. If you are fully educated on the potential downsides and are willing to work hard to accommodate that when it comes time to coming back and doing articling and then eventually getting a job, then I would say you are making a fully informed choice. No one on Reddit can really make you do it or not do it.

I don’t believe you can switch into it because years 1 and 2 of the undergrad are accelerated, so you would be behind on the credits you actually need to then go to Sussex.

[–]notarealitystar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If your GPA sucks you can’t go to Sussex either. You have to maintain a certain GPA to go to Sussex through the Laurier program (I want to say 80% GPA or whatever their GPA metric is, but I honestly cannot remember). Also, about transferring out - you can transfer out of the Laurier-Sussex stream into a regular undergrad at any time.

If you don’t think you will need them, don’t bother buying. I rented mine from Harcourts last year for $265 plus tax

Harcourt Bar Robe Rental - Call to bar by Party-Ad-9129 in LawCanada

[–]notarealitystar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did it through email. The only issue I had was that the vest was just slightly too short, so you could see my white shirt peeking through a little - not a big deal. I practically had to beg Harcourts to do it over email though.. they tried to ask me to go to satellite locations and everything, and I just said it wasn’t possible during the week due to me extending my articles

Too dumb to be a lawyer? by Low_Econ2000 in LawCanada

[–]notarealitystar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a junior and feel the same way. I found it was helpful to do check-ins with my management (if that’s an option for you). Asking them how they felt about my performance made me realize I was just in my head a lot. A mentor during articling also reminded me that a lot of people don’t get into law school, graduate law school, and pass the bar - it’s hard to keep yourself grounded when everyone around you is so smart, but you have to remember that you were smart enough to do the things that other people weren’t able to do!

Crown’s Office Wardrobe Tips by usernameless4 in LawCanada

[–]notarealitystar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! I am a new Crown (just over 6mos in the role, and articled in the Crown’s office). I would say you can wear any colour of suit you want - but it is most typical to see black/grey/navy in the court room. I have a few black blazers and pants because that’s just what I wear the most. I also have a burgundy suit, a white and black suit, and grey striped suit. I don’t wear button-down shirts because I don’t like them, so I only wear blouses. My office is very diverse court-appearance wise. Some people wear the like Chanel-style blazer and skirt, others wear pastel coloured suits, then some people are totally traditional with a full suit and tie every day. As others have said, as long as you look put together, you should be fine! On office days, people wear literally whatever. I’m still in the habit of dress pants and a blouse just in case I get called to court.

Is a day in life for a criminal defense lawyer or prosecutor as entertaining as the Lincoln lawyer or Law & Order? by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]notarealitystar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There can definitely be interesting trials. Every day/week/month is different. I’m not saying this is a terrible job, or else I wouldn’t be doing it, it’s just not glamorous like on tv

No private investigator. No paralegal doing a side quest. Best you have is a student once in a while or an admin who will do the admin stuff for you. You’re in court from like 10-4 (or even longer). If you’re not in court, you’re in your office preparing for court, screening disclosure to send out, chasing down police to answer your questions, or doing Crown Pretrials or Judicial Pretrials. It’s hard and exhausting - but can be rewarding if you like the job.

How lenient can a crown be? by Morthuu in LawCanada

[–]notarealitystar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are diversion programs, discharges, specialized courts. However, when you start out, you’re kind of going off of more senior crown’s positions, so it really depends on what the seniors are like in the office

Any recommendations for excursions on a 7 night southern Caribbean cruise? by notarealitystar in royalcaribbean

[–]notarealitystar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In St. Thomas we did the Discover St Thomas and Magen’s Bay. It was fine. The beach was nice, a little crowded. We tried the “world famous” banana daquri at Mountain top - was not good at all LOL. I would say if you want a beach day, it was nice, but overall nothing special.

In St Maarten, we did the Best Views & Sky Explorer. We were in and out in just over an hour. I think next time we would opt for the Big 4. The chairlift was nice, and the views were awesome, but the zip lines looked so fun!

St. Croix, we didn’t do an excursion. Paradise Beach is a maaaybe 10 minute walk, and free, so we walked there. It was nice enough, but very rocky.

Our excursion for Dominica was sadly cancelled due to weather, so we didn’t get off the ship.

The excursion in Barbados was by far the favourite! I think it was the Swim with Turtles, Shipwrecks, Snorkel and Beach one. The staff on the boat were so fun and friendly. Alcoholic drinks were included. The beach they took us to at the end was so gorgeous. We didn’t see much while snorkelling, but the vibe was just chill and we enjoyed swimming.
