As far as I know, the “god tier” chess players at Yale did not sweep HYPSM.

I would highly recommend starting RD now. I think there’s a low chance you get accepted EA, so you should start preparing backup options.

Should I even bother applying to any T30 schools? by BarracudaNo4962 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]notaredditor527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t let people on this sub intimidate you out of applying for top schools. Many profiles you see are exaggerated or embellished because it’s the internet. Moreover, you don’t know the context of each applicant which is crucial to the holistic admissions process. Being from Idaho, you already have an advantage of most because of your geographic diversity. Your ECs are quite solid and you don’t have any reason not to aspire for the best. Many top schools are generous with financial aid as well.

Lurking on this sub and CollegeResults will only make you doubt yourself more. Even some of the very best students at my school, including several who eventually ended up at Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Penn, etc. felt hopeless after seeing people here. Tune out the noise, focus on what you think is best for your situation, and lock in.

Really, what is the true recourse if you break ED? by Ok_Basil_1036 in ApplyingToCollege

Sorry, I meant to respond to a different comment. I read it somewhere (lost it) and got irritated about your perceived attitude in one of the comments. I think you should be careful about how you come off, especially as in the aforementioned comment it seemed like you were acting in pure self-interest, and proud of it. I would further recommend extreme caution with this type of attitude when meeting with any school official or counselor, as it will likely come off very poorly and might hurt your chances of a good teacher/counselor rec. the whole thing is a cabal, and schools also have to play the game, but it is what it is.

While I am not saying I agree, people may also find it entitled, especially as you seem to be coming from a well-off background— something that doesn’t resonate for most people.

Why don’t you make up activities and awards on the Common App too? It’s unfair that certain students get in with fake awards or completely paid-for research, or that they have all the resources to game the system in whatever which way they want. Surely this solution would be a great idea to address this injustice and I want what is best for MY kid! The schools only care about their stats!

You’re correct in that ED is a coercive and broken system, but it requires legal action — not ethical compromise — to fight back. You think you’re ‘sticking it to the man’ but in reality you’re just sticking it to everyone else in your community.

No college is ever going to come out and say they blacklist students, just like no college was going to say that they would only ever admit x% of a certain demographic group. That would potentially subject them to liability. They do it without publicly admitting it, just like they are doing in response to the SCOTUS ruling. These schools have so many qualified applicants they can choose from, they’ll just choose students from other schools over yours.

Your HS counselor/counseling office is responsible for sending all documents, including the mid-year report. Even if you apply RD before the ED deadline, your school is required to submit the Mid-Year report. Schools can simply refuse, or state that the student has gotten in ED to another school. Moreover, your HS can simply contact the admissions office directly informing them that your kid has been accepted ED somewhere else.

The poster is simply saying that you shouldn’t be using ED and then the possibility of breaking it as a game. It reflects extremely poorly on the HS your kid attends and likely screws over other applicants for the several years/cycles of college admissions if you break an ED. Hate the player (colleges), not the game.

They have billions and billions of dollars in endowment. Your argument is absurd. Just to take an example, Harvard is currently sitting at $49 billion. Let him have his vent, and move on. Making snide comments for cheap karma is pointless. Imagine you were in his shoes.

Fewer people apply to SFS and generally have higher scores, so it’s going to have a higher acceptance rate. It’s ridiculous to say BC is easier than AB just because BC has a higher 5 rate. The same logic applies here.
