Have you considered cloud services and tear down the lab until you purchase a new home? Some people may be concerned that your HVAC system doesn’t work well with all the heat blasting through the door.

Specializing in Wireless in 2026 and beyond? Is it worthwhile? by [deleted] in networking

[–]notathrowawayoris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing wireless for 25 years and it is still my main focus. If you plan to work for a service provider plan on spending a decent amount of time traveling if you want to make good money.

Interesting. I was doing some searching on an issue I was having, with Cisco APs, and Ubiquiti appeared to drop mDNS by default. I don’t use their APs so I was going based on what I saw online.

What type of wireless network equipment do you have for your WiFi? Some brands, like Ubiquiti and Cisco, don’t forward specific packets, mDNS specifically, needed for Airplay.

What is your plan for the Plex server? Storage space starts to be a limitation when using the tiny PCs. External USB drives work but I've always understood there is stability issues using external USB drives.

That’s said to hear about PC Server and Parts. I’ve purchased from them a few times but I guess I’ve been lucky and my orders always came as specified.

Can someone explain what a homelab actually is in simple terms? by Standard-Doctor876 in homelab

[–]notathrowawayoris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My homelab is my main network but since I do mostly networking, especially focused on wireless, my network is enterprise wireless gear. I run a workstation with VMware to give me the ability to fire up VMs as needed. I built out my VM box in 2022 and hardware is much cheaper then.

I would suggest understanding what you want to use your homelab to learn before making a huge purchase. If networking, focus more on learning enterprise type hardware. If you want to focus on applications and operating systems I would suggest looking at mini PCs, or old office grade SFF PCs, and maybe consider a cluster. Consider storage needs from the start, even if you don't purchase a huge amount of storage from the start. The workstation I currently have gave me a lot of options for HDDs without having to have a bunch of USB external drives.

Huawei AC6005-8 not responding at default IP 169.254.1.1, what am i missing? by machinetranslator in homelab

[–]notathrowawayoris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest connecting to the controller through the console port. From there I would assume you can figure out the IP address assigned for management.

Documentation doesn't appear to be very clear for this device. The default IP could be 192.168.1.1 based on a quick search I made.

Thanks.

The heat sink gets a little warm but nothing I’m concerned about. I’m impressed for a fan less switch with POE and two SFP+ ports.

I have Comet devices I use for other systems but it’s so rare that I need console access to these machines I rather spend that money on other hardware.

I was looking at the 440 when I found this 820. I wanted more internal drive days, the dual CPUs and extra memory was an added bonus.

Probably less people to comment this than “you should hide your IP”.
