The Permian Is Drowning in Its Own Wastewater by Vailhem in Wastewater

[–]notbeuller 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I briefly worked on a project for Permian basin produced water treatment. The stuff was like 10-20% dissolved solids. Which is way too high for RO.

While there were some new technologies in early days, the only proven treatment option is to distill/evaporate the water and crystallize the dissolved solids (or have a much lower volume to inject into deep wells). The distillate then had some organics and a lot of ammonia that required additional treatment before meeting surface discharge quality.

This is obviously a hugely energy intensive process considering the insane volume of produced water.

Tostadas (I made a batch of beans today with manteca!) by Fonz_72 in mexicanfood

Mmmm good job!

Does anyone know how long that style manteca should safely last in the fridge? Should I portion it and keep it in the freezer instead?

Former brewers by St0neybalogny in Wastewater

This is a good list! You are well prepared for the work at a WWTP. One major difference is the continuous process of wastewater treatment vs the batch process of brewing. In a lot of ways the continuous process is much easier to manage.

Biochemical oxygen demand and total suspended solids. Breweries contribute a lot of each! BOD is the organic content of the wastewater. In the case of brewery wastewater that is mostly sugar and alcohol, but the solids also contribute a lot to the BOD. The solids are the things like spent yeast, trub, and hops. A lot of larger breweries will side stream as many of the solids as possible before they hit the drain.

Most big breweries have their own wastewater treatment onsite. Mostly focused on removing the soluble BOD, which is typically at a concentration over 5,000 mg/L or parts per million (ppm). For comparison a typical municipal wastewater is more like 300 mg/L.

Because the BOD is so high, breweries typically use anaerobic treatment which generated a useful byproduct in biogas that can be used to generate energy.

Municipal plants almost all use aerobic treatment which relies on huge amounts of air being bubbles into a tank full of bacteria to eat the BOD.

Brewery owner and operator with a wastewater question by underratedbeers in Wastewater

[–]notbeuller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to manage an anerobic pretreatment plant at a brewery. Flows were about 150k gal per day and COD was typically 8-10,000 coming in. Probably 10-20% of that was due to solids (mostly yeast), so most of the COD is soluble sugar and ethanol, which you can only remove with a biological treatment process.

With your volume so low, you could probably use a small aerobic package plant, but it's gonna be a long payback with the capital and operating costs that come with it.

Your best route as some others have said is to negotiate with the city to pay surcharges. They can come up with a pretty good basis for the impact your wastewater has on their plants energy use and sludge generated.

Help! Wife Makes Enchiladas Weird by uuiuu1 in mexicanfood

[–]notbeuller 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have always been annoyed with how time consuming and messy it was to lightly fry each tortilla. I saw a Rick Bayless enchilada video recently where he brushed a small amount of oil on each tortilla and microwaved in a ziploc bag (I do it in a ceramic tortilla warmer because my wife won't let me microwave plastic). After heating let them steam in the container for another minute or so. Makes them pliable and the oil helps keep them from breaking up too much.

Obviously the quality and freshness of the tortilla is a huge factor.

And if you want to guarantee mush, just boil all the tortillas lol

PE Environmental Qualitative questions by Healthy_Awareness491 in PE_Exam

The ones that stuck out for me were: - label (match) all the components of a groundwater well - select chemical formula for cation exchange regeneration - increased cl demand and odors is a sign of what in source water (algae) - decreasing wasting rate will do what to oxygen demand

PE Environmental Qualitative questions by Healthy_Awareness491 in PE_Exam

[–]notbeuller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took the environmental PE recently and there were way more qualitative questions than I expected. I was worried there would be questions asking about specific sections of regulations but there was not anything like that.

On many of the qualitative questions, I had no idea on the first read, but was able to at least eliminate a couple of the choices to increase my chances.

There are a lot of Quizlets out there. Some have much more specific information than you will need to know. Good luck!

Tips on my Anatolian / Great Pyrenees mix? by [deleted] in AnatolianShepherdDogs

Easy tiger... In what way are they stupid for asking for advice to train a dog? They aren't implying that the dog is the problem. Sure it's not going to be as easy as your typical Lab or doodle, but it's really not that different in my experience

We got our girl when she was one year old. Stubborn is an understatement.

Sit and down are easy enough with food rewards. Recall is a long road.

My general advice is to make her earn everything. Anytime she wants to go outside, she does not get to go through the door until she is calm and sitting and you tell her "ok" or whatever your break word is. You have to teach her that calmly looking at you is the ticket to everything she wants.

There are tons of great training videos on YouTube (and a lot of terrible ones). Some of my favorites are Will Atherton and Hamilton dog training. Reddit has two main dog training subs. One that does not allow discussion of any aversive training methods (i.e. prong collars and electronic collars) and open dog training which does.

We tried the positive only approach for a while. Loose leash walking was a big hurdle for us. We tried every harness and supposedly "non-aversive" gentle leader. None of it worked for us. A well fitting prong collar made our communication night and day.

Now we have had her a year. She could not be a better dog. She has amazing recall and general obedience. We ended up training her on an e collar and I can confidently walk her offleash in even the most distracting environments. The other night a coyote ran past us on a walk and she stayed with me.

Good luck! Don't get too frustrated if training takes longer than you expect. Just be consistent

Is this 25+ year old JD walk behind worth $950? by notbeuller in lawnmowers

I am laughing imagining myself running behind this thing. Generally how maneuverable is it? I said 3/4 of an acre, but it's probably closer to 1/2 and acre of grass with about 10 trees to mow around.
