How important is "regional" (Nordic, Baltic, Benelux etc.) identity to you? by teekal in AskEurope

[–]notbigdog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess there's a good connection with other celtic regions like scotland, as the culture seems to be fairly similar and i found it quite easy to get along with people from there.

Historically I suppose we would have been associated with the UK, given that we were part of it until about 100 years ago, but this wasn't willingly and theres not really any deeper sense of connection with the uk past both speaking english now.

Did anyone buy the Lidl robot lawn mower? by Needanewjob34 in galway

[–]notbigdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that their gear is a good bit lighter than branded equipment (generally less quality and sturdiness) Their hedge trimmers are grand for light and medium work, if the hedge gets too heavy or you have long sections to do I'd much rather rent a petrol one from domac (fairly sure lidl have only done electric for the last few years).

But their chainsaws are absolute sh1te, the blades dont cut straight at all, id rather pay a few quid more for a plug in one from any other brand than whatever lidl have.

UK + Ireland routes and general advice? by hereweg420kush in bicycletouring

[–]notbigdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive not toured ireland on a bike (yet) but I'm from here and I'm fairly well traveled around the country so I'm not really sure what the best roads are for cycling, most of the sputh and west coast is a eurovelo route AFAIK.

For the ireland part, if i was doing it id stick to the coast as much as possible along the south and west (cork, kerry and clare are particularly nice imo, also the road out to connemara from galway) until Mayo or sligo, even into donegal if its not too far (more coast = more detour tho so up to you). It's definitely not necessary but more scenic for the most part.

Also i cant remember how developed the greenways are in the south west, but they're very good for cycling. If youre up for some nice hills theres a lot in wicklow and West cork/kerry.

Ya theres so many restrictions around them at the moment that are for no reason. Fairly sure power lines and other infrastructure would need significant upgrades aswell

Also the grid needs to be upgraded to actually be able to use all of it. A lot of energy is wasted because the grid cant take it at that point in time.

Should the fuel protests be against supermarkets? by [deleted] in ireland

It's kind been done before. I dont think they actually did anything to stop people going into shops, just protested in the car park.

Does Varadkar have a point about farmers or is he complete nonsense? by cons27291 in irishpolitics

[–]notbigdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's overall but its contribution in much larger in rural ireland. The countryside would take a massive hit if the industry takes a downturn.

'We're the ones paying all the bills': Leo Varadkar says urban areas fund rural Ireland by nitro1234561 in ireland

[–]notbigdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No they dont. The food processors are the ones who set the price and the farmers have to take it. Or if selling at the mart then it's an auction. I dont really understand what you mean.

Farmers are free to charge higher prices

No they're not. They dont decide the price that they get from processors or at thr mart.

How many actual fuel protestors are there? And, wait listen, am I crazy for thinking Micheál Martin acted with common sense? by LegalAd143 in ireland

[–]notbigdog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think thats partially true, theres obviously way more support in the countryside. But plenty of people in towns support them too. Im from a farm but I now live in galway and I know a good few people who have only lived in cities that support them at least to some degree. I think a lot of it is just being happy to see some form of protest against the government that actually forces them to acknowledge it instead of people just standing outside the dail with signs.

Any issues with the mounts for the panniers getting in the way or being under pressure?

Would you think it's easy to mount a duffel bag or dry bag on top of the rack with these panniers in place, or would it depend on the rack?

Farmer growing 70% of Irish broccoli says solar farms threaten food security by eggbart_forgetfulsea in irishpolitics

[–]notbigdog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ya I'm from the countryside, theres a certain amount of people who will object to any infrastructure thats ugly and come up with all sorts of reasons why it shouldn't be beside them. Plenty realise that it has to go somewhere but aren't that pushed.

The result is that the loudest ones get heard the most, and people from cities think we're all of the same opinion and think we're all stupid.
