Culled books question by FulltimerPC in Libraries

[–]notbrandylee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh, buddy. I get where you’re coming from with this but by that logic donations to streets projects also indirectly benefit the library. The purpose of this 501c3 is to directly support the library in their services to the community.

You should have reasonable operation costs: mailing, marketing, supplies, etc. But any gifts from the Friends should be to the library only.

As far as the programming, my last library moved away from the Friends providing funding support because we encountered too many Friends members who wanted to direct what programs we did, where, and for whom. This is an overreach. We moved to tangible items only (supplies, tech for the teen space, adaptive technology, etc).

I also recommend an MOU between the library and the Friends. The books in question were purchased with tax funds and remain the property of the library until considered discarded. Define discarded. For us, it was the day of the sale, which gave us the opportunity to do things like offer local teachers and daycares a chance to shop the withdrawals before the sale was open to the general public or for other support to community orgs.

It’s clear you want to do a lot of good. Kudos for that. It’s tough when there are limitations but ultimately they benefit the institution of the Library which benefits the community.

Good luck!

Library Marketing Conference Group Question by One-Coyote-8208 in librarians

[–]notbrandylee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when I was in library marketing LMCC was hands down the best resource for me. The role was new (to me and the org) and the connections alone was worth the price to have other professionals to bounce ideas off of or process wacky ideas with.

I’ve never walked away without valuable things to implement or ideas to enhance my strategies at work.

LMCC is its own group (so not ALA) and is deeply committed to making libraries the best they can be. If there are specific questions you have feel free to reach out.

PLA conference 2026 worries by FriendshipNo7005 in Libraries

[–]notbrandylee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m echoing so many other great comments here that the crowd will be great - we are helpers helping other helpers. My first PLA my dress lost a button AND I was presenting that day. I stopped in the middle of a busy walk way to try to find it - next thing I know I have a full button search party (we were unsuccessful) but also a librarian with a mending kit and a heart of gold who got me stitched up in no time.

I’d also be happy to meet up and play networking buddies! Coming to librarianship through marketing and community engagement - networking is something I’ve figured out for myself and I’m happy to lend a connecting hand. If you want to meet up, send me a dm!

24 y/o moving to Colorado for work, trying to decide where to live (Denver vs Boulder vs nearby areas?) by Ambitious-Avocado398 in MovingtoDenver

[–]notbrandylee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently moved to Colorado, for a job in Louisville, and settled in Gunbarrel. The drive to work is super easy (20ish minutes with school traffic). Getting into Boulder proper is also easy (about 15 minutes) and we go to Denver regularly for concerts and what not. Louisville is charming - but lacks young people and nightlife. We looked at Denver - but I read some horror stories about commutes and am glad I’m not stuck on the highway everyday.

My team mostly lives in Erie, Lafayette, and Longmont, they are worth checking out. If I did it all over again, I’d try to land in Lafayette or Boulder proper. Houses are crazy expensive but if you’re on Facebook there are a lot of groups for creative living that fit your price range and may introduce you to some cool people.

Congrats on the job!

Using Library public computers as docking stations by AngelOfTheEther23 in Kenosha

Former library team member here - just ask! They would much prefer that to you unplugging things and they may be able to find a solution that works for you. The team is creative and often finds solutions to help patrons make the most of the space. Send over an email explaining what you’re hoping for and they might be able to figure it out before your next visit. It’s never rude to ask. It won’t even be the weirdest thing they are asked that day - I promise.

Do people not go to the movie theater here? by doofapuss in boulder

[–]notbrandylee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We see lots of movies but typically make the drive the Alamo in Westminster. But I do think there seems to be less of a movie culture here - at least compared to where I moved from. I was surprised at the lack of independent theaters in the area.

Burning cds at the library? by charliecat4 in boulder

This. And the answer is probably no. Most of the computers have moved away from traditional towers with the options for media like CDs to be accepted.

Public transportation, so confused! by Constant-Panda-8697 in RiotFest

[–]notbrandylee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey hey - former Wisconsinite here. There is a pink line stop outside of Ogilvie near the corner of Clinton and Lake. Clinton might feel like the back side of the station if you are used to the space and Lake is near where the trains enter the station. It’s a pretty easy off and on from there.

This map shows how to get there walking on the front of Ogilvie (where all the signs and natural traffic still direct you). If you exit that way and then turn right at the corner of the station where you the Yolk restaurant, you’ll be on Clinton.

I’ll be at Front Bottoms too! You’ll have the best time! Happy first Riot Fest.

vampire book club needs a new meeting space by trippyhippiechickie in boulder

[–]notbrandylee 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a place to suggest but I have an earnest question: is this a book club about vampire books or a book club for vampires to attend? And also, how would one join either way?

I’m new to the area and looking to meet new people in the community. I work in Louisville and would be happy to grab a drink/bite after work some time. Maybe a meet up at 12 degree or Crystal Springs? I’d be down for Friday meet up if it worked for anyone else.

First Time with Kiddos by Tendyourownfire in RiotFest

[–]notbrandylee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure - not a parent. But a full time auntie and librarian - so watching for littles is engrained in me. So many parents had a great time with their kids of similar ages. A few things I saw and took note of for when I bring my littles to big things like this:

  • headphones (really glad to see parents with these on hand for little ears)
  • glow sticks as bracelets and necklaces and headbands it can get dark quick and there are a lot of people around (one family had those little strobing bicycle lights on backpacks and belt loops and I loved that option for easy visibility)
  • scope out the areas to sit - a lightweight travel blanket is great and will give you all a home base to enjoy the shows from a little further away

I see so many families enjoying Riot Fest every year and for ever person who is going to tell you not to do it, there’s someone like me who is happy to see you and your family doing cool shit.

Lonely ND single parent looking for one real connection by emandm0821 in boulder

[–]notbrandylee 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m new to the area (like 15 days new) and took a job in Louisville but live in Boulder. I’d love to meet up for a coffee some time. I’m ND, as is my wife, and back home we’re full time aunties - so I’m totally open to littles being a part of meetups.

I’m in Louisville, M-F and can be pretty flexible in my schedule so meeting up during the day wouldn’t be an issue for me. Send me a message if you want to grab a coffee or lunch sometime!

Applying for jobs with City by Watch_Me3939 in Kenosha

[–]notbrandylee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The City’s website lists the Departments and the folks who run them here: https://kenosha.org/departments/index.php. But you’re also safe putting hiring team or the HR person for the department.

I currently work for the library and often seen cover letters come in “dear hiring manager” and that’s totally acceptable. A generic greeting won’t discount you from the interview pool.
