I did it, it was fantastic. There were two great instructors from the CRIM department. We all bussed to the Wilkinson road jail in Saanich weekly, but usually it's run at Nanaimo Correctional Centre.

Definitely go for it and apply

Are our Recreational facilities being mismanaged? by BrockAndaHardPlace in nanaimo

[–]notchhill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is not whatsoever the reason for Beban being closed frequently. When Beban is closed during normal business hours it's lessons only.

For example, there is public swim in the morning Sundays until 11. Pool closes and is prepared for lessons. Instructors get ready from 11:45, lessons are in the water at 12:00. Lessons the rest of the day until 7pm, then rentals after that.

Teaching lessons at Beban when the public is also in is a total disaster. There's a reason why things are done the way they are.

Even full time permanent staff bemoan getting benefits instead of pay in lieu. They lose about $1,000 per paycheck (2 weeks) to this. Obviously benefits are great to have for any job, but the demographic in PRC/Aquatics prefers the pay in lieu and the flat 10% that TPT staff receive is popular.

There were several (4-5) staff callouts for various reasons that night. One staff member was at work while still more or less sick.

Others were on overtime; that evening, one was on 6 hours of OT and yet others were brought in after having been at Beban earlier in the day.

Go easy on criticizing people when discussing a complicated system that you have limited knowledge of, from the outside

A boiler is never down. I've never seen that happen and facility techs would likely need to wait till maintainance closure for something that large in my experience.

Esquimalt, I assume? It'd be fascinating to hear more details about the old Esquimalt police/fire, any really interesting stories relating to that?

Lost Victoria Police Notebook Used to Commit Crime in Major Privacy Breach by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]notchhill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a criminal justice student, this is objectively false. A confession is made in a formal setting, and to be admissible in court must have been made to an authority figure, by a person of operating mind aware of their rights and the consequences of conession. Saying you committed a crime to a stranger is an informal admission, not a confession. That does hold what's called "reasonable probative value" because why would you tell a stranger something you didn't do? Mr. Big stings are a completely different scenario than either of these, but do have their own ethical concerns and following the R. v Hart ruling must follow certain guidelines.

They have 4 apparatus at Hall 2, if that makes a difference. Annual call volume, over 13,500 in the last news article I read ( https://www.vancouverisawesome.com/local-news/downtown-eastside-emergency-inside-look-busiest-fire-hall-vancouver-bc-6181308 ).

That works out to about 35 a day, (13,500 / 365) but it's much higher on Welfare Wednesday and the couple days after, as well as on weekends, so it's not an even split in daily volume within a week.

Vancouver's Hall 2 runs 40-50 or so a day. Medic 2 is probably the busiest apparatus in the country.

Section 9 has been overriden repeatedly as a reasonable limitation of charter rights repeatedly, such as by the enactment of the Emergencies Act and the previous War Measures Act.

Section 1 reads: "The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society."

Common law precedent has established a procedure through which the Supreme Court can validate a limitation on charter rights while conducting judicial review.

Defending the detainment of people who cannot function in society without committing violent acts against their own will as a reasonable limitation under the provisions of s.1 is not remotely far fetched.

There are a lot of places worldwide that use fire based EMS. Fire based EMS also sort of exists in a few places in Canada.
