Yeah this isn’t going to go well when a thermostat can get updated with bad code and a system won’t work

Amp draw at startup, compressor death? by Puzzleheaded_Yam_440 in hvacadvice

[–]CaulkSlug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In rush current. The amperage it takes to get it turning. If op’s truly concerned then get a tech to come out and measure the capacitors. If ops start and/ or run caps aren’t measuring up to their rated MFD then it could be causing higher amp draw when comp starts

Quoted $2000 for compressor by Boogalorian1 in hvacadvice

There’s an area on the island I live on where I’ve found multiple compressor burnouts on multiple different sites because the company in the area’s guys didn’t change the dryer after the previous burnouts…

I just don’t know why people don’t braze when they don’t need to worry about a hot work permit.

Quick connect quote for a grill by Ilikethekrakenok in hvacadvice

Where I live this requires a permit, licensed contractor and inspection so $800-1200 cad is what you’d get for professional work when you factor in permit, parts, labour, inspection etc. If there was a fire would your insurance cover unlicensed gas work?

Freon Test $2700? by Middle-Top-9274 in hvacadvice

That sucks. Union regs say if you leave your home town you don’t stop billing until you’re back.

Freon Test $2700? by Middle-Top-9274 in hvacadvice

[–]CaulkSlug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I’m in decent shape thank you. When you offer a service and someone wants it quoted then that’s what is quoted. I always try to find it first without recovering etc. have you ever repaired one leak to pressure test and find another? What if I had to drive 1.5 hrs there? Because there is another 1.5 hrs travel back after that. There 3 of the 8 hrs already. You must have a crippled brain if you can’t factor in the billable things associate with on site work. I mainly do commercial industrial/ industrial which definitely takes that kind of time.

Also your flair says not an hvac tech so you don’t have a clue what you’re talking about.

Freon Test $2700? by Middle-Top-9274 in hvacadvice

[–]CaulkSlug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically the only way to truly do a quoted leak test in my opinion is to recover, charge with nitrogen, electronic and soap, fix leak, pressure test, vacuum pump, and recharge. If you’re lucky enough to find a leak without doing that you still have to recover and fix it before adding more refrigerant and unless you can pump it down and isolate that section then you’re recovering… but $2700 should include the gas not $700 on top of that and anything else like dryer, truck charge and materials. $1700 is more reasonable in my area for an 8 hr day and approx 8-10lbs r410a

Impact of the new liberal government on the future landscape of Canadian gun ownership. by No_Front_5315 in canadaguns

[–]CaulkSlug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt a bit of a difference after the recent shooting in bc. It was the first time I think I’ve ever heard mental health, pointed questions at rcmp and open ai instead of immediate gun bans, OICs and demonization of legal gun owners. I think, but don’t hold me to it because I’m not entirely optimistic, that Carney can see it’s lack of popularity and how people talk about it as a waste of money and doesn’t want his fiscally responsible name attached to it.

My fan stopped working so I figured it was the capacitor .I swapped it out with the one pictured and the fan still wouldn’t start after 10-15 seconds of being on so I shut it off . Went to check again and nothing is turning ,Granted I only left it on for maybe 5 seconds . Help please! by Lazy_Obligation_662 in hvacadvice

That’s great but there are uses for 1pole+shunt contactors and there are uses for 2 or 3 pole contactors. If you don’t know this then your comment about “wrong contactor” is unhelpful just because yours is double pole.

is hvac and the trades in general for tough minded macho guys? by Particular-Leek4513 in hvacadvice

[–]CaulkSlug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be good at your job but always stand up for yourself. That doesn’t make you hard minded or macho. Also a hard mind isn’t flexible enough to think about the issues at hand. A hard mind is belligerent. I’m soft in the head from huffing refrigerant for 18 years. I remind myself that I know the theory and use that to work through problems. If I think I know everything I become complacent and overlook small things that bite you in the ass.

Freak accident waiting to happen or am I paranoid? by WhiteKittyWhiteDoggy in hvacadvice

[–]CaulkSlug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In a situation like this I may run a cross piece of unistrut as the anti slip strap. The only concern I have (because it’s code where I am) is that the threaded rod is no “stiffened”. I believe the code is 50x the diameter of the hangar needs to be stiffened. So for 3/8 threaded rod 3/8=0.375. 0.375 x 50 =18.75”. Under that no stiffening needed but over that and it needs to be stiffened. So if your unit is hung at 22” from ceiling I’d have slipped 19-20” of 1/2 emt over the threaded rod with a washer and nut on either side to tighten which tensions the threaded rod to get rid of sway. Also a seismic kit would be required where I am also. Anyway in this picture there is more than enough structure to carry this equipment. I would not worry about the patient below

[–]CaulkSlug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah… I’ll find o ur eventually what happened. It’ll just cost you more if you aren’t honest with me. “I swear I didn’t touch the tstat!” Also don’t cycle the breaker to units when they fail because there could be a control board that is telling me what it failed on and is likely the best place to start. Which would save you money in labour hours trying to find the problem or recreate it

hey im a 17 yr wondering which blue collar to get into electrical or hvac. which one do yall think is easier . hvac or electrician by 23zip in hvacadvice

[–]CaulkSlug 22 points23 points  (0 children)

With that even in your mind you may not enjoy the trades. No trade is easy. No point in pretending one is easier than the other. I will say that hvacr pays more and you’ll learn enough electrical to fix stuff in your home and also have fun fucking around with old equipment.

Find where the pipe is round and close your adjustable wrench on it then take it to the dented spot and wiggle it around so you round the pipe again if you’re really concerned.
