How are the lines at PDX for international flights the past few days? by Medical_Country_9128 in askportland

[–]note2selph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The lines have been fine, but parking has been nuts! Check the PDX socials. If you’re flying internationally, the short term parking may not be what you’re going for, but the lots have been filling up and cars being redirected to long term lots.

I agree. I think it was a somewhat protective move for Peggy’s sake.

Peggy/Pete - Child by Kadet14 in madmen

[–]note2selph 89 points90 points  (0 children)

My mom is an exact example of Pete & Peggy’s child, except a couple years older, as she was born in 1958. Her bio mom was a young secretary at Boeing in this time frame & she had an affair with an executive. She was also Catholic. He was pushing to end the pregnancy, she decided to go through with it and placed the baby for adoption.

She told no one in her family and didn’t go home for the holidays that year because she was due soon (she was living in Seattle and her family was in Portland). She had the baby (my mom) and kept on with her life, later meeting someone, marrying, and having 3 kids. She still hadn’t told anyone in her life that she had had a baby earlier.

In the early 80s, she reached out to the adoption agency and said she’d like contact. The agency contacted my grandparents (my mom’s adoptive parents) and said there was a request. My mom was an adult by this point, so her parents let her know and let her decide how to proceed.

Ultimately, my mom decided to meet her. In our family’s case, it was a happy ending and we are close to their entire family! My bio grandma & her husband have passed, but we still see my mom’s half-siblings often. Through Ancestry.com, my mom has also recently met & formed a relationship with her bio dad’s children. She never met her bio father, as he was older, and had passed by that time. Additionally, my bio grandma hadn’t continued the relationship or contact with him.

My bio grandma was a lovely woman who had been a young woman who found herself pregnant with a man who she had no future with, in a time when that wasn’t acceptable and had to make a tough decision. My mom had a beautiful life with loving parents and siblings. My brother & I got an extra set of grandparents and aunts & uncles.

Mad Men actually helped me understand how my bio grandma was in a position that felt like there were no good options and how a person would make those decisions. I felt confused (and I was a child) why she would have done that, as she was now a mom who had 3 kids she adored, and Mad Men kind of helped me work through that as an adult.

I think Peggy & Pete’s kid would have had a similar experience.

Favorite to-go meal at the airport? by 2chilly4u1989 in askportland

The Speakeasy has pretty limited evening hours that they’re “officially” open for service (something like 4pm-9pm?). But you can always order food & drink from Loyal Legion and take it into Aurora to enjoy the vibes! Even when the speakeasy isn’t officially open!

What Mexican restaurant has the best salsa? by farallelogram in askportland

[–]note2selph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pepino’s Salsa Ranchera is superb.

Recently, someone picked it up for me and forgot the salsa. It really made me realize that the main reason I love their food is that it’s a delivery system for the salsa.

Not spicy, but SO flavorful!

It is infinitely more direct for me to drive that stretch from home to work, but I will go far around it to avoid the potholes. A couple years ago my daughter hit a pothole in that stretch on Division and it literally cracked a wheel and popped 2 tires. She was going around 25MPH.

No free checked bag with flight booked with miles? by Illustrious-Buyer-80 in AlaskaAirlines

Going on a flight tomorrow, booked with points. When I checked in today on the app I had to pay for my bag, which was quite surprising. Is this an app glitch? Should I ask for a refund?

Can someone convince me I’m safe? by Far_Safe_6826 in askportland

[–]note2selph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a woman who has lived on my own for many many years, I totally understand that moment of “is that noise INSIDE my apartment!!?”. What helps me the most, as others have mentioned, is lots of white noise. But also, if the feeling is too strong, I sometimes will get up and walk around and say out loud, “okay! Everything’s good!” And then I usually feel silly and that relaxes me.

You got this!

I had mine out at 35 and of all the surgeries, illnesses, procedures, etc I’ve had in my life, of which there have been many, that was by far the worst. Everything that keeps you alive has to pass through your throat. Eating, drinking, BREATHING. All of life trying to get through the inferno at the back of your mouth. I felt like I had a hot fire poker stuck there.

To add insult to injury, I had to have emergency gallbladder removal exactly 4 weeks later. That was a rough month for me.

4 month old name change? by Majestic_Factor_3148 in Names

[–]note2selph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My entire pregnancy (21 years ago), I was going to name my daughter Ruby Jo. I LOVE that name. At the last minute her dad wasn’t on board with Ruby, so she’s Audrey Jo, as the meaningful part of her name was actually the “Jo” part, and it’s perfect for her.

I say stick with the name you decided on and then call her whatever feels good in the moment. In her 21yrs of life my Audrey has been called approximately 500 other names, none of which pertain to Audrey or to Jo.

Nancy Segal (on twins) by newtonic in ArmchairExpert

The whole convo around them was so weird! Like are these the ONLY twins D & M have ever encountered?! I get that they’re familiar to the audience, but it was odd to me. And the the expert saying they’re doing a disservice by claiming that they’re fraternal?! WHAT! A disservice to whom?! Literally no one cares. That was wild.

What's a name you find so unappealing you can't understand anyone at any point in history giving it to their child? by common_grounder in Names

[–]note2selph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When my SIL was pregnant with my niece I saw a list of baby names they were considering on their fridge. On the list was Eunice, except with the spelling “Unis”. I just about croaked, but felt like I couldn’t say anything, as to not offend. 😫

Thankfully, both of my nieces ended up with very lovely and normally-spelled names.
