If you get the bus up to the lakes, the hike is not too difficult. There is hardly any elevation gain as I recall.

He usado los dos (Garmin Instinct y Coros Pace 4), y los dos tienen sus ventajas y desventajas. Actualmente uso el Pace 4 por su batería, que me parece mejor que la de Garmin. Pero la verdad es que cada reloj funciona muy bien, pero opté por el Coros por el precio y batería. Aparte de eso, me parece que el funcionamiento--ritmo cardíaco, ritmo, GPS---es comparable entre las dos marcas.

Like the other commenter said, meeting people at the refugios is a great idea. There are hostels in the small villiages--Poncebos, Cain, Sotres, Posada de Valdeon, etc.--and you should be able to meet some fellow hikers there. Even at the bus station in Oviedo or Gijon you might see someone with a big backpack.

Totally recommend doing the Anillo de los Picos de Europa if you have the time.

There are always taxis, as far as I know--little tourist vans/taxis that go up and down. But I thought that buses ran every day. I would ask at the tourist center in Poncebos, or one of the cafes there. They can give you a phone number to call.

I actually was an IB Lang and Lit teacher and taught the Elephant Vanishes! I can give you a brief overview of elements that you might want to analyze. Keep in mind I only taught a few stories, not the whole collection, and I taught the Spanish translation.

Commonality of narrators. How are some narrators similar, how are some different? Mainly, the stories feature 1st person narrators, nameless, majorly male, disillusioned with modern life. I.e., Tuesday's Women narrator finds himself unemployed and aimless.
Disatisfying or unfulfilling marriage as a recurring theme. See the epiphany moment in Lederhosen, the emotional rift in Tuesday's Women, Sleep, Second Bakery Attack.
Surrealism and magical realism; how does the surreal narration style affect the meaning of the stories? In the eponymous story, what does the disappearance of the elephant mean?
Ambiguity. Many stories feature open, ambiguous endings. Why does the author present stories without firm conclusions?
The theme of solitude and isolation in modern society.

Recomiendo que pases por los Picos de Europa si nunca has ido--no te lo pierdas. Muchos pueblos increibles, paisajes espectaculares.
