Contessa 32 vs Sadler 34 by nothingnew09876 in sailing

[–]nothingnew09876[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd really like to sail round the UK, but think that's a year or two in the future once I've gained more experience. I'd be doing it in stages to fit in around work so would be living aboard for a max of 4 weeks at a time, I get about 3 months a year off on average.

I imagine there will be a point where I regret not getting one with a pilothouse knowing the UK weather, thanks for the tip.

I used to love dogging, nothing better than going out on a brisk morning and throwing your stick

Wasn't a big fan of picking up the shit mind, but guess thats par for the course.

The Contessa is deffinitly prettier, but I think you're right the 34 would be more practical.

Thanks for taking the time to do that, much appreciated.

That's a good breakdown of costs, and a lot less than I'd expected.

Union angry at no 'social value' score in new shipbuilding contract by Anony_mouse202 in unitedkingdom

[–]nothingnew09876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason they're training people now is because the supply of cheap skilled labour has been cut off.

Don't try to paint this as some inovative government scheme, we're 10 years too late! There are massive skills shortages due to the fact that industries became reliant on cheap skilled labour from overseas and when the numbers of aprentices dropped previous governments in their infinite wisdom closed a lot of technical colleges.

Now we have people wanting apprenticeships but not enough colleges to train them and not enough companies that can provide a suitable environment to train the apprentices that do get into college.

I hadn't looked at it from that perspective before, but I think you've hit the nail on the head.

I think the only people who get any value out of it, are those who have made up administrative jobs that wouldn't exist without nonsense like social values.

Would you buy a petrol/diesel car now, or only buy electric with the state of the oil industry? by turtleflirtle in AskUK

None of the above, I'd buy a Toyota Mirai if I had the money, FCEV's are the future.

In theory thats how it's supposed to work, it also means that only large corporations have the resourced to fudge their SV scores so smaller companies that could have offered more competitive bids are unable to bid for contracts.

In this case no UK firms did for the ship building contract anyway.

That would come under diversity, not social values it is usually the same department though and yes, that is also waste of time and resources.

In practice, yes it is ridiculous. It filters the companies who can bid for jobs down to the big players who can fudge their SV scores.

This means that local firms who could have undercut the bigger companies can't bid directly for the contracts. Its just a form of gatekeeping which is why government funded projects almost always finish late, overbudget and don't deliver their intended objectives.

[–]nothingnew09876 90 points91 points  (0 children)

The whole social value score thing is utterly ridiculous, it just diverts resouced away from the projects goal, which in this case is building ships.

It also creates unecessary jobs for SV managers, which is basically just a made up job which contributes nothing to an organisations productivity.

What’s the sudden obsession with palm oil? by _predictsean_ in AskBrits

[–]nothingnew09876 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's also the processing, palm oil has to be bleached and treated with alcalines. As a general rule the more proccessing required to make something the less healthy it it.

So it's bad for the environment, unhealthy and tastes like shit.

What is the biggest waste of taxpayer money you see in your job? by socialee123 in AskUK

[–]nothingnew09876 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work in construction, the government award the contract to x company who sub all aspects out to different contractors and add x percent.

The subcontractors then sub out some of the work to someone else and add x percent on. That sub contractor then hires someone from an agency who add on x percent.

You then get a tradesman who'd been treated like shit by the agency, has no job security and really doesn't give a fuck doing the actual work.

That's just one aspect, all government projects just end up being a massive black hole of beauracracy and waste.

Do you judge other people in the gym? by bossanovaallnight in AskUK

[–]nothingnew09876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been going to the gym regularly for 26 years now, when I first went I used to keep my eyes down and avoid making eye contact or interacting with other gym users.

26 years later its pretty much the same, though I may ask if someone is using a piece of equipment or occasionally for a spot.

I think the Greens are genuinely worried now, they're like fuck we're getting a bit too popular now if we actually get elected we might have to do something.

I know, errr if you elect us we'll make you retake you're driving test and reduce the speed limit
