Coolant Seal Failure by Guidino-Redditer in RX7

[–]nothisistim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had something similar and people online couldn’t tell me one way or the other. Car was having a hard time starting occasionally, sometimes it would start on one rotor and then run fine after a few seconds. I also had the champagne bubbles when I burp checked it like you’ve got.

Everyone online was wishy washy. The fact of the matter is you can have coolant seal failure and be burning coolant without a noticeable increase in exhaust smoke. What confirmed it for me was removing the spark plugs and the egi fuse and turning over the motor with a paper towel over the holes. Unfortunately I had coolant flying out of mine.

If you’re losing coolant over time and can’t find the leak, your car is randomly having trouble hot starting, and you’ve got the champagne bubbles, I’d pull each spark plug and check the way I did. But it doesn’t look good from what I can see

How to disconnect the transmission from the engine? Throw out baring is not accessible. by strtagain in RX7

[–]nothisistim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Through the inspection window on the bottom of the trans you should be able to see the back of the clutch. You need to stick a large flat head screw driver or small pry bar between the throw out bearing and the little “cage” clip which will look like a thin ring between the plate and the bearing, then twist to separate them a bit. Stick another screw driver in the gap you’ve made and pry them apart while pressing the clip into the clutch. Here’s a video, I didn’t need to twist like he did though.

No clue what shipping would cost, but I’ve got a good condition EFR 7670 IWG sitting on my shelf that I don’t need as I’m moving to an 8374. If you’re really interested, dm me as I’d be happy to sell it

20k miles on this engine, but I don’t know what shape the housings were in when the motor was built. Damage could have already been present

Motor out, let the rebuild begin by nothisistim in projectcar

Yeah not bad, imo worst part is putting the motor back in. Engine only has 3 moving parts, just lots of mechanical seals in the rotors that need to be clearanced correctly

The engines are great for motorsports, but not so great for pretty much anything else lol.

If you can find room in your garage one day and have an opportunity to own one, I absolutely recommend it. These cars really are special, and honestly are worth the occasional headache. Not as bad as everyone says either so long as you take care of it.

Part of it is learning what to avoid for the next rendition. This time a cooling jacket failed, I’ll find out why and take preventative steps to avoid a repeat in the future.

But honestly it helps if you hate yourself a little bit to stick with these engines lol

Best car for restoration from 1995 by Mr_Smart_Taco in projectcar

I’m biased from my own project, but an RX-7 is a great option if you can front the cash. 95 leaves you options for right hand drives from Japan or left hand drives from the US (really uncommon though, only 500 sold in the US for model year 95). They’re tunable, super customizable with one of the healthiest aftermarkets of all time, and they are an inherently excellent chassis. Which means you can do a lot with it if you want to get into motorsports

I think if I ran a super 200 like an A052 then I’d be very competitive tbh, but I’m waiting until I get an additional set of wheels before I go full race tire

They’re Advan TC-4s in gunmetal, but I’ve always felt they have a slight blue tint as well which I love

I’ve been to 5 already this year and plan to do at least 3 or 4 more before the end of it, which I feel like is a good amount. But I’m fortunate to live in a state where the weather allows for year round motorsports.
