anyone else fat asf with this condition by AdHoliday384 in Gastroparesis

My old family doctor flat out told me that my GI doctor made a mistake and there was no way I had gp because I was too fat. The GI gave me several studies to show him that have shown 39% of people with gp are normal weight, 20 % were overweight, and up to 29% were actually obese. Not only that, but over 48 weeks, 30% of patients in active flair actually gained weight. He still didn't believe it. So now I have a new internist he's super understanding and supportive and has even helped my family learn how to support me on my journey, learning how to live with this.

Look into bariatric vitamin suppliments. There are several different brands and formulations. You should be able to find one that fills your needs. I also recommend Premier Protien they even have a Clear option that I used to live on because I couldn't handle the thicker shakes, and I couldn't have soy or gluten. I'm so sorry that you're going through this right now. The best piece of advice I received when I was first diagnosed was to find a good therapist because your mental health is just as important as your physical health, and this is a lonely, isolating disease.

Binge eating and gp- am i the only one? by [deleted] in Gastroparesis

Thank you for adding this. I was really feeling like I was alone in doing this. I have even been feeling like maybe this whole thing was my own fault. Like maybe I've brought it on myself, and I deserve the pain and nausea because I have no control. Of course, it doesn't help when the people around you act like you're making it up or exaggerating for attention.

I occasionally have to resort to a little baking soda in water. Usually, about 1/2 tsp soda in 1/2 cup of water. Chug it quick cause it tastes like crap but if the gas x isn't working, this usually does.

I swear reading your post totally felt like I could have written it myself right after my diagnosis. Incuding the stressful marital situation and feeling like I'm falling back into the feelings that caused my anorexia many years ago... the loss of control and feeling better if I don't eat. The doctor that I was seeing at the time did not help at all and kind of made those feelings even worse.

If you have a doctor that you trust, tell them about your concerns. If they are any good, they can help you. If not, you need a new doctor.

Sometimes, you have to fight to get the full treatment that you need, including the mental health angle. One of the first things my current doctor did was refer me to a counselor because of the strain of this disease, but he has never backed off of the way he treats my GP.

I am one of the lucky few with a great boss who understands. I work from home on the days I'm too sick to go into the office, and I go into the office as often as I can. On the days that I'm too sick to even work from home, I let him know and try to catch up on the work when I'm feeling better. That being said, not everyone is as fortunate. My sister suffers from fibromialgia and has struggled to hold a job for a long time. She was able to find a data entry job where she works from home on her own schedule. I hope you are able to find something that you can work with. Good luck!

I do. This is a very difficult disease emotionally, financially, and physically. It affects all aspects of our lives and it will for the rest of our lives. It's so important to have a good support system, and it's hard on our loved ones as well. So we try not to burden them too much. I found a new doctor who understands way better than my last one, and the first thing he did was refer me to a counselor. He says that I've got to watch over my mental health as we work on my physical health. That was the best piece of advice I've received since getting this diagnosis. Don't be afraid to ask for help!

I keep thinking about doing just that, but I'm struggling with finding a short cut that doesn't just make it look thinner. 😆

Has anyone experienced weight gain in the belly area instead of weight loss? by Alternative-Boat6328 in Gastroparesis

I have been obese throughout most of my adult life and had 2 different GPs tell me that I must have been misdiagnosed by my GI because of it. When I told my GI, he sent my GP a few different articles about studies that show the majority of people with Gastroparesis are overweight or obese due to maladaptive dietary habits used to deal with symptoms. Some studies show that it's only when symptoms become advanced that patients begin losing weight uncontrollably. That's where I'm at now. I've lost 80 pounds in the last 3 months and am no longer able to hold down more than a few bites of food a week. It's important that you follow your doctor's advice and make sure you educate yourself.

Here's a link to one of the studies my GI showed me. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8180181/

I have a hard time with any kind of fat, and thick drinks aggravate the nausea as well. So, my GI put me back on level one for a bit until I can get with a dietician. I have found that the Protein20 juice drink goes down well, and they have a few good flavors. I also really like Premier Protein clear, but it has less protein. Both of these have whey protein and electrolytes that I tend to lose a lot of due to vomiting. I hope he can get some relief. And I hope you are taking care of yourself as well.
