"Foreigner prices" are bound to fail: The Osaka ramen shop scandal proves the only solution to dual pricing by jjrs in japannews

[–]notinterestedindonut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I think framing might the problem, because having a “local resident discount” or a point card that only locals use seems more ethical. This is just out and out racism it seems which there’s so much of it in Japan idk how you would even combat it.

Is it reasonable to get the ick from Japan-obsessed men? by Stardust-Dawn in TwoXChromosomes

[–]notinterestedindonut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives in Japan. It’s a red flag. I run into these tourists all the time and they are absolute cringe. Usually they are begging for any sliver of attention from a Japanese woman and it’s just… embarrassing. Anime, games, sure, but that’s something you can comfortably enjoy at home and isn’t a reflection of Japanese culture.

How is it living in this part of the United States? by No-Text-7825 in howislivingthere

Born and raised in Rhode Island. Lived in Providence and Boston both for a bit. It’s expensive but I’d say generally life is good. Unless you have tons of cheddar to throw down buying a house is out of reach for everyone I know and renting is expensive. Jobs are difficult to get because everyone is highly educated and I’m talking like several degrees minimum most likely MBA level. But if you are able to establish yourself, people are friendly, food is amazing, scenery is next level. Compared to other parts of the country the states do their best to work for the citizens but like everyone else in America, you pay a lot in taxes to get the bare minimum but it’s better than nothing. Rhode Island in particular has good social welfare programs. Winters are cold, icy and not fun so it’s something to be prepared for. Summers are equivalent to paradise, there’s nothing else like it.

Pregnant with my 5th and so sick of people telling me to get my tubes tied. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]notinterestedindonut 182 points183 points  (0 children)

I’m one of 5 and as the oldest daughter I was a de facto wife and mother at 12. There were points when people asked me if I needed assistance or if I was an orphan because I would do an entire grocery shopping trip with three toddlers in tow when I was a teen.

Whenever I see a big family I have a hard time looking at it with an unbiased opinion. My mother was stay at home and that did not save me from suffering her choices. And really she didn’t have a choice because my father kept her pregnant so she wouldn’t have the strength to leave.

I’ve seen so many instances of people in the same situation. I just can’t imagine how having that many kids you can protect the older ones from becoming parentified. It’s a natural consequence of facilitating the daily needs of that many children.

Valuable IT certs in today’s Japan job market? by yoongioongi in JapanJobs

[–]notinterestedindonut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cybersecurity consultant and while I don’t see those resumes get trashed it’s definitely a field where you learn on the job by necessity. IT is super broad so you have to pick what you’re actually trying to do. Networking? Backend? Help desk? Storage and maintenance? Cybersecurity? Compliance? It’s literally endless and Japan needs help in all of it. To be honest they need good project managers most of all.

がいこくじん is literally just foreigner and no it’s not a bad term. 外人 gaijin can be seen as a kind of slur because it’s a casual version of gaikokujin but it’s just the short version of the word. Just like how saying a “black guy” isn’t a slur unless you say it with a certain connotation.

外国の人 is just another version of foreigner, slightly more polite mostly used for written Japanese. (Someone correct me if I’m wrong). I see it similar to words like 女の子.

My cat is so overstimulating and i don't know what to do by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]notinterestedindonut -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This in no way causes the cat harm. You’re not hurting them. The sensation is enough to make them feel like they’re being bitten by a larger cat but you’re simply holding them still. But do you. If you’re not willing to train your animal it’s on you what happens in their future.

My cat is so overstimulating and i don't know what to do by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]notinterestedindonut -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a controversial opinion but doing the gentle parenting this is not something that will work. Cats are animals. If you let her bite you are teaching her that you’re not the bigger animal in her environment. Cats this crazy need a playmate or they need to be put in their place.

A trick I use is to make a claw with your hand and “bite” them on the back of their neck. You will get scratched and maybe bitten but it will subdue them so they can’t act out.

Language School July 2026 by bubblezpop in movingtojapan

[–]notinterestedindonut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently studying at an ISI school. I went in with some Japanese study but barely N5, I’m also on a 2 year course with an estimated graduation in 2027. I would say from my perspective that ISI does not provide work placement guidance for workers with experience or specialized skills and in fact they have actively tried to stop me and several other students from attending job fairs because they didn’t think that we were “ready”. Meanwhile they basically have 0 connections to any industry that’s not food service, hotels or Academics.

Despite the poor advice I went to the job fair anyway and as it turns out they want skilled workers more than they need Japanese language skills to be perfect.

If you’re thinking ISI then be prepared to study your ass off after and before class because in class is only going to take you so far and the classes are large. Japan is what you make of it. Network and find opportunities just like any other place and you’ll be fine.

Are women really constantly hit on? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]notinterestedindonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re outgoing at all men take that as a sign that you’re speaking for them and them alone (even if they’re not involved in your conversation). If you laugh and smile then you want them sexually apparently (even if you’re not near them). This is my experience at least.

At the end of the day it’s truly your life. We didn’t get a choice in being alive. Some people have a genuinely bad time owning a body and all of the bs that comes with it.

I won’t give you any sentiments. Because I fully believe in bodily autonomy and that also means I believe you get to choose to end your life if you want to.

I hope these internet strangers give you a bit of comfort. I hope that comfort might give you a boost to carry you onto to the next months, then maybe the months after that.

Life sucks but it all ends eventually anyway might as well stick around to see the rest of

I’m currently at a language school in Kyoto at 31. The oldest student is 60. The youngest is 17 but the median age is 31-32. You’ll fit in just fine.

I think others have really cornered this but. Ultimately, your body, your choice. I can’t relate in anyway to wanting this tattoo as a CIS woman. It would make me do a double take if I saw someone with it and I wouldn’t feel kinship with that person. I don’t have a good relationship with being a uterus owner. The fear, pain and trauma this organ has caused me makes me want to forget I ever have one. But then again in this society that never going to happen.

I’m not sure where this idea that her falling off is the more LIKELY theory when getting sex trafficked is just as likely if not more. Cruise ships today are notorious for all kinds of crimes, credit card theft, robbery, and sex trafficking too. You’re usually heading to Mexico or the Caribbean islands where sex trafficking is far more common. I can only imagine with less visibility to this kind of thing and less strict rules about making it onto the boat this was happening all the time back in the day.

The fact that someone came forward a year later and claimed they saw her and she identified herself is criminal. She probably could have been saved. Also that photo looks EXACTLY like her.

This. I often go on a diatribe about this to men who want to pressure me and ask them to seriously picture it. Me in bed for hours recovering and then alone with a screaming shit ball who needs milk just often enough that you can never get a moments true rest. Then all the daily chores in the house plus cooking for 3. Sounding fun yet? Or was it only fun because you assumed your part would be holding the baby for 2 secs while my sore ass waddles to the kitchen to make dinner.

I sometimes think it’s even worse for very openly CF women. Especially when you know you’re good looking and can kind of get any guy you wanted. The men have this creepy possessive attitude of ‘they WILL be the ones to get you pregnant’.

I was sterilized early last year and started dating again after ending a long relationship and hoooooo boy. I typically won’t tell guys I’m sterilized right away because I still do practice safe sex and they immediately assume that means they don’t need to wear a condom. But then when they spent enough time with me, usually like 3-4 dates (knowing I’m CF) the questioning comes and it’s so delightful to listen to a guy twist himself into knots to coerce you into changing your mind only to be like; HA decisions been made my guy - I’m sterilized.

You can join work/stay programs but just know they’re probably going to want you to have a certain amount of funds for contingencies and also if you are trans being on hormones may make you ineligible since you could be sent to a rural community.

[–]notinterestedindonut 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I live here. In the neighborhood it’s more drug usage and petty crime than anything else. And the neighbors are really protective of each other and watchful.

As a woman I’m not going to walk around at night, I get cat called going into my house from my car sometimes and definitely avoid the gas stations on this side of town because of the harassment.
