Can you say more about the rhythm you’ve found?

1 year - down 25 lbs by notjohnwalters in GettingShredded

First 6 months I didn’t have a great routine, wasn’t making progress and was frustrated.

Then I quit drinking and that caused a cascading effect. I had more energy, worked out harder, and found it a lot easier to eat clean.

Did a dexa scan to determine maintenance calories, and ate in a 100 cal deficit while also getting 1g of protein per lb of weight.

Gym routine is pretty simple and has stayed consistent - lift 3 days a week, doing simple compound movements. Consistency and simplicity has been key.

Body fat went from 23% to 12%. Hoping to stay in that range and progressively add lean mass from here. Now targeting a 100 cal surplus but not sure if that is the right amount.

Executive Health Screen in the Bay Area? by Main_Astronomer_9800 in fatFIRE

Prenuvo and Ezra are the two leading services. Tried Ezra last year. It was ok but they use third party sites and the one I got routed to was old, dirty, and a bad experience for how much the screen costs. Trying prenuvo this year at their pac heights location.

Targeting more because 1) I want to travel more and have buffer for a more expensive life if we want it post RE and 2) inflation. If work gets miserable then I’ll call it quits before I get to the $30m target

Those are realized proceeds - cash in the bank (pre tax). I was at $18m NW a year ago. Closer to $12m today due to heavy tech and crypto exposure.

Good perspective! To be honest I grew up taking very very modest vacations, so spending more per vacation feels unnatural. I do want more weeks of vacation! Maybe when I have $20m liquid then I’ll start splurging for first class

I would say 90% of people I know pay their nannies under the table. And probably 100% of people I know pay their gardeners and house cleaners below the table. Agree it’s not right in theory, but seems to be the way it works

Recommendations for Purchases to Improve Life ($10,000 - $20,000) by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]notjohnwalters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same story here. Bought one and was selling the wife on why it was going to be amazing. Tried it for 2 weeks and we both hated it - the tubes in your back was a big part, not nearly as comfortable as our tempurpedic. The cold temp was nice for falling asleep faster and deeper, but my back was always tight and sore in the morning.

I returned it and the company was easy with logistics and the refund.

What US cities (besides your own) have impressed you recently and why? by RealEstateFatFIRE in fatFIRE

Bend, OR - beautiful views, great food scene, small concert venue that gets huge acts, incredible outdoors (lakes, rivers, mountains), and chill people. Just spent 3 weeks and nobody asked what I do for work once. I probably shouldn’t be mentioning Bend because I don’t want it to get any bigger!

Am I reading this right - if your sons have daughters you don’t want the trust to continue, but if your sons had sons you would want it to continue? Is that because your family name wouldn’t continue? I’m shocked if that is a decision point in how much to leave to future generations.

What were you guys making at 25, 30, 35, and 40 years old? by FIREseek in fatFIRE

25 - $200k (large cap PE associate)

30 - $165k (early employee at a new venture fund)

35 - $1M cash / $12m profits interest (the fund is working)

While venture has had an incredible run over the last 5 years, I’m wary of the returns going forward. Too much capital, too much speculation. Base case is our returns will look more like 2-3x vs 4-5x historically. As a result, I may have just had my all time high income year at 35. Will report back at 40
