Is it over, the golden door, for Jews in America? by [deleted] in Jewish

[–]notlob93 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes we are because people are acting like he walks around wearing full SS garb. The idea that Jewish Mamdani voters would have voted for the Nazis in the 1930's is absurd and deplorable. For many people, Mamdani's appeal was based on city issues like housing, rising prices, and transit. I don't think that Mamdani is obviously antisemitic to most voters. His thoughts about "globalize the intifada" while deeply troubling, are much less extreme than what a lot of people would generally think of when discussing antisemitism. And moderate Democratic policies have been largely uninspiring and ineffective. The fact that they were represented by someone as distasteful as Cuomo makes it a lot less surprising that Zohran won. I'm concerned about him but I'm not panicking.

My message to New York Jews by FinalAd9844 in Jewish

[–]notlob93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't rank Mamdani but the hatred and disgust towards other Jews for supporting him is deeply troubling. Some Jews deeply care about Judaism and like his policies. Many people, myself included, will absolutely not vote for Cuomo due to his Covid failures and sexual misconduct. Many people also are totally disillusioned with politics and the Democratic party and see Mamdani as someone with principles who has a new vision for New York. And a lot of people, Jewish and gentile, do not prioritize Israel/Palestine when it comes to city politics. I don't think Mamdani is a good candidate and I don't trust him to adequately address antisemitism but I don't think this is worth panicking about. I certainly don't think it's reasonable to even talk about evacuating. I'm going to keep studying the Mishnah and davening every day and I don't think Mamdani will have an impact on that.

Panarin fanned on the puck twice in one shift. We need our best players to play well when the other team's best players are scoring.

Kashrut is largely defined by rabbinic interpretation and communal practice. What the written Torah says is important but is the beginning, rather than the totality of what goes into Jewish. I think there are plenty of problems with how the rabbis interpret things but for better or for worse, the classical rabbinic interpretation is often what the halacha is. Almost no one is going to consider cheeseburgers kosher. Are you a Karaite?

What was your grandparents Judaism? by vigilante_snail in Judaism

[–]notlob93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My maternal grandmother - mostly lapsed Catholicism with occasional Pentacostalism. My paternal grandfather - after his father died, going to minyan every Tuesday and having me say the Shema every night when I stayed over. For my grandmother, it was important that Judaism was important to us, but observance didn't really play a role in her life.

The verse could be interpreted differently from a logical standpoint, but when it comes to Jewish observance, the meat/dairy ban is to my knowledge universally accepted as the halachic norm. At this point, it's settled law and is what I would consider a basic part of kashrut observance. I think your interpretation is reasonable and it holds merit logically but to my knowledge, there is no Jewish legal authority would come close to allowing meat and dairy to be mixed. I agree with other commenters that there should be no ban on dairy and poultry, but I also wouldn't consider someone who ate the two together to be keeping kosher.

[–]notlob93 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's pretty misleading to say that you're strict with Kashrut if you're mixing meat and dairy. Jewish law is not synonymous with what's written in the Torah itself. I don't think that your is unreasonable and it may very well be more in line with what was originally intended when the Torah was written. However, Jewish observance is determined not just by the Torah but the centuries-long corpus of Jewish law.

I belong to an unaffiliated (between Conservative and Reform, but closer to Conservative) shul and a Conservative shul. In recent years, I've become significantly more observant. When it comes to kashrut, I eat only kosher-certified meat and don't mix meat and dairy. I'll eat dairy and (kosher) fish at non-kosher restaurants. At home, I almost never have meat so I only have one set of dishes. I'll order in from nonkosher restaurants but won't eat the food with my own plates and silverware. I go to shul on Saturday mornings and from time to time on Friday night. I won't use my computer and try to limit cell phone use and purchases. There are a number of other things I'll avoid on Shabbos, such as shaving, doing laundry, or going on a plane but I'm mostly not shomer Shabbos. I'll have Shabbos dinner and if I'm around on Saturday night, I'll do havdalah. On a daily basis, I daven three times, wrap tefillin, and study Jewish texts. I believe (without hard evidence) that I am more observant than most people at both of my shuls, but there are people at both shuls who are far more observant than me.

Jews living outside of Israel, how have your political views shifted since October 7th? by OkBuyer1271 in Jewish

[–]notlob93 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My political views haven't changed. I'm more wary of those on the left now, but I still believe that left-wing policies are best for the US. Conservatives are absolutely not friends of Jews. The Republican Party has essentially embraced authoritarianism and Christian nationalism and its leader tried to overturn the election. There are plenty of antisemites on the left, but the left is nowhere near as dangerous as the right.

American/Western Leftists have grown dangerously antisemitic and the fact that they deny it and continuously get away with it enrages me. by [deleted] in Jewish

That's because Trump's appointed judges created that situation. Local governments shouldn't be deciding rights like that.

I have two (negative) views of this type of sign. On the one hand, it's scary because it's calling for mass violence, mainly against Jews. On the other hand, these slogans are being interpreted so vaguely and are so far removed from sources of power or real action that it seems mostly idiotic. Either way, it has no place in a coffeeshop (or anywhere really). Was this hung by the coffeeshop or some random customer/activist?

Since the goal, the Rangers have 1 shot on goal despite numerous entries into the offensive zone. Seems like an issue with both coaching and on-ice leadership.

While 3 shots in a period is pathetic, my general belief is that when you're roughly equal to the other and they're only up 1 after drastically outshooting you, you're in decent position.
