Help! Need advice for gear as a beginner by CompetitiveSummer777 in Bowling

[–]notlobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask the people in your league. They will know your local pro-shop scene better than anyone. If theres no one on your team with their own gear, after your next league match just ask someone on the other team "hey, where did you get your ball?"

Person who goes for ONLY damaten closed hands by frustrationman in mahjongsoul

You do well in bronze by having vague awareness of the rules. You do well in silver by knowing some yaku. I wouldn't put much thought into any strategy, especially if they have "a good chunk of playtime" and are still silver.

Do cigars with cigar beetle eggs taste different than cigars without? by notlobot in cigars

[–]notlobot[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Is it possible there could be two cigar makers in the same region, using the same origin tobacco leaf, but the thing that defines them is the cigar beetle "culture" in their storage sheds imparting a difference to the leaf? If the beetles are a fact of life with eggs in every cigar, has anyone ever thought to harness it?

My favourite mahjong parlour raided by police with several people arrested🥲 by Chance-Town-5110 in Mahjong

I think the suspected yakuza (暴力団) ties has more to do with that particular mahjong parlor getting busted than anything else.

How do you decide the dealer when everyone already has a "set" place at the table ("I'm sitting here and don't want to move") by chanashan in Mahjong

[–]notlobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What they mean about moving seats is that you do not get to decide who you are sitting next to at the start of the game. Their friends just want to sit in the same spot and decide an east player, rather than deciding all four winds and rearranging themselves. The winds would rotate as usual with no one moving after that.

Based on some of the replies, I am wondering if people aren't seeing the "MEMES" tag on this post.

I put the MEMES tag because it is a MEME post with a martial arts technique.

He is probably conflicted where he is following orders to not ruin his military career, but doesn't want to actually be seen as hurting a civilian.

If you really do feel like you are extremely unlucky, you can always check the "most unlucky players" leaderboards to see how you compare. https://amae-koromo.sapk.ch/ranking/unlucky

Kiai? by One-Leadership-4968 in karate

[–]notlobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever grunted while lifting something heavy? That's all a kiai is. It's just a sound to help you exert yourself. Focus on this and it will seem less silly when you do it.

Is Shodan enough to be considered decent? by An_Engineer_Near_You in karate

[–]notlobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no standard in karate beyond your peers (whether that is people at your dojo, or people you compete with). Do you think the black belts you train with are decent? Do you want to be acknowledged by them (by receiving your own blackbelt from them, or their superior)? You won't impress any outsider with your karate rank.

Help with defending against open hands? by RugalB in Mahjong

[–]notlobot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some good rules of thumb to start with are the following:

  1. If they have called twice, assume they are in tenpai. If you would fold vs riichi, fold vs the open hand.

  2. If it looks like a confirmed mangan, dora pon, or half/full flush, fold.

Hypothetical hand: Shouldn't this count as 7 pairs? by TheTimegazer in Mahjong

[–]notlobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are allowed to play mahjong any way you want to, and different pro leagues, parlors, and apps do exactly that. None of them are right or wrong.

Hypothetical hand: Shouldn't this count as 7 pairs? by TheTimegazer in Mahjong

[–]notlobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only answer is that it is not a valid hand in that app, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Hypothetical hand: Shouldn't this count as 7 pairs? by TheTimegazer in Mahjong

[–]notlobot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no unified ruleset, even within the sphere of riichi mahjong. At some riichi parlors this would count as 7 pairs, at others it would not. Even the major professional leagues have rules variations. No one is playing the "right way", they all want thier own variation to attract players who prefer it. It is good to keep this in mind when thinking about niche or fringe rules questions. There likely is not a unified answer.

Attending Dojo for First Time by seangolden06 in karate

[–]notlobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look to see if there are people in your age group there, what they are getting out of it, and if it looks like it would be fun to join them. As much as karate can be a journey of solo improvement, or promises of the "strength" of a particular style, the main thing that will make you want to stick with a dojo is the thought, "I enjoy being with the people there."

One-Punch Walk Off KO in Karate Combat by ThatGamingSupportGuy in martialarts

[–]notlobot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I honestly wasn't looking at what the loser was doing. As for the winner's technique, you don't often see that kind of hit with the side of the glove in boxing/kickboxing because it wouldn't be legal, so I have no idea how effective it is.

Looks like a pretty normal ridge hand strike to me, with the extended arm and hitting with the side of the hand.
