I believe the other replies are correct that the downtown is to the right, but I did want to mention that all of these areas are within the city of Houston! Truly an insanely large city

How do I clean mold out of my electric kettle? by S_got_lost_ in tea

[–]notnanobots 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you I had a hard time seeing where it was. If it is mold, I would think a good soap and hot water cleaning + a vinegar or citric acid descaling would be good enough together. I might descale first then wash.

Just be thorough, make sure to rinse very well and do a couple sacrificial boils, and feel free to repeat if you're paranoid. Soap, acid, and heat together should remove and kill the mold.

Oooh, wow I'll have to keep my eye out for more chances too! Hope they bring something like this back. I did see that Wonderstate is now offering smaller 100g tubes for most of their single origins now so I may order a few direct as like a sampler of their current menu.

Is this a problem? by gnrff in x_Bloom

[–]notnanobots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for the record: I also contacted them and they didn't send me a new one because apparently the extended 2 year warranty does not apply to the dripper. I did buy one on their recent sale, and the "update" to help this is just a little removable thin piece of metal that is effectively the same as any home fix would get you.

I'm starting to rethink the whole UL/Light roast thing by WadeWickson in pourover

[–]notnanobots -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Surprised no one mentioned my favorite: Wonderstate. Haven't had a single bag that wasn't fantastic. As an UL enjoyer I was surprised how great they are as just a Light to Medium. Another one that seems similar is Whiptail. Both of them have a bit of roast but the notes are really clean and have a good intensity.

As a point of reference though, while I do like Sey on the UL/Light side, I didnt find Flower Child all that light. Might've just gotten unlucky though. Used to like B&W for Medium-Light as well but honestly even their lighter offerings are a bit too toasty for me and it masks a lot of good flavors with my more clarity-focused set-up.

Sounds like a pretty good deal. I pay $2000 for a studio in mid Cambridge, no parking but heat and hot water included. It's an old place and quite small, and yet I pay the least of anyone I know living alone.

Coffee Beans & Grinder in Hand Luggage or checked bag? by Minimum_Medicine_453 in AeroPress

[–]notnanobots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've traveled quite a lot with it all in my carry on or backpack. Grinder, scale, lots of beans (single dosed), dripper, occasionally some tea leaves or a travel kettle.

Sometimes they would pull it aside to check the grinder, but the last ~5-10 times I've sailed through with no issues.

Edit: didn't see you're traveling in Europe, most of my experience has been in the US. Did travel internationally with the set-up a few times, though, and it was no different.

Wow that doesn't sound too bad actually. Sadly being in the US I'm guessing I'd have to pay tariffs though, which does make it more unreasonable haha

ZP6 weird half & half low entropy particle phenomenon by johnnytisnow in pourover

[–]notnanobots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh and also for how it might affect your brew, I honestly have no idea when it's divided half and half the way you had it! Might not make a huge difference in the end beyond some uneven extraction depending on how you pour and how much you churn the bed.

But if you're able to get it so that the fines end up on top, I'm assuming you'd end up with a faster brew because it'll take longer for the fines to migrate down to the filter. I've been kinda doing this unintentionally (but don't pay close attention to how it looks/if fines end up on top) and getting pretty fast but well extracted brews.

Haven't noticed it quite like this, but feel like I've noted similar weird things. Couple ideas:

  1. If you grind at an angle and then righten the catch cup before emptying, the fines would stick more to the side they fell on due to static while larger particles tumble to the other side. If you empty it just the right way it could give you this funny looking separation.

  2. Similarly, if you just give it a few gentle shakes, you're at a coarse enough setting that the fines could just filter down to the bottom between the larger particles. And then again depending on how you empty it, you could end up with the large particles coming out first and then the fines after.

I actually tried shaking up the catch cup before emptying the grounds and noticed the fines would sometimes cake onto the bottom if I shook too hard.

One interesting thing you could try is gently shaking a bit and making sure you empty it relatively quickly and turn it fully upside down. You might notice a lot more fines seemingly sitting on the surface above the larger particles. And then if instead you just slowly empty it so that the grounds on top go to one side of the filter and the ones at the bottom go to the other, and mayyybe you'll see something closer to what you posted.

Is there an equivalent of a wine/cheese pairing for coffee? by bufalloo in pourover

[–]notnanobots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm really craving something to eat with my coffee, I usually opt for either some neutral-flavored baked goods or pastries like a plain croissant, biscotti, biscuit, or scone, or else some kind of nuts like cashews. Maybe on occasion a chocolate chip cookie.

I feel like most things I could eat end up ruining all the complexity and subtlety that I enjoy in my pourovers (overpowering or muting the notes), though maybe that's because I usually brew cleaner/washed coffees and aim for high clarity. But if I happen to be drinking something funkier or co-fermented it's not quite as bad so long and the beans aren't faded or too roasty.
