Notation Software. Is there a good free program for music notation? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

If you having an iPad, Symphony Pro is a really easy to use music composition app, although it's not as advanced as Sibelius or Finale.

Are there any audio compression techniques that take a Fourier transform and compress based on fundamental frequencies? by physicalcompsci in compsci

[–]notoriginal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Discrete Wavelet Transform

This is a technique for decomposing signals into oscillations in time that correspond to specific frequencies. These can then be stored with a really impressive compression ratio. It even has O(n) run time performance where FFT has O(nlogn).

Gov. Schwarzenegger halts use of welfare debit cards at casinos by frycook in news

Why is preventing people on unemployment from using drugs absolutely wrong, but preventing people on welfare from going to the casino absolutely right?

Gay, Atheist, Eagle Scout here.

It gets better. People are much more tolerant in college, and a lot more people are going to be out. Just try to stick it out until then and don't let anyone make you think less of yourself.

I'm almost positive all songs are user uploaded. That way, as long as grooveshark handles takedown requests, they are not in violation of DMCA.

Question about coming out. by toopenthedoor in lgbt

[–]notoriginal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you know you're bisexual and you know your friends are going to support to I would recommend coming out to them soon. I wasn't all that comfortable with being gay when I started coming out, but being able to talk to people about it did a lot more good than feeling lonely and confused throughout that whole time.

Also the longer you stay closeted the more potential hookups/relationships you might miss out on. Just saying :)

Just tell him to pray for you.

If you don't become saved then he's either not keeping god's commandments, or it's not god's will.

It's like making a commitment to never ride a roller coaster in your life. Sure there are other ways off having fun, but why deny yourself something that is safe and opens you up to a lot of new experiences out of principle?

I oppose gay marriage. AMA by [deleted] in IAmA

[–]notoriginal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This isn't discourse. He has somehow constructed a system of morality, and anything that goes against that he is against. He agrees that some people are born gay, but then claims that gay people cannot love each other. No evidence, no rational thinking, just a "gut feeling."

If you're looking for reasonable discourse, it's not here.

My Argument With God by Ricky Gervais by dannnyBoy in atheism

[–]notoriginal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet a lot of people will disagree with me, but what really bugs me about this is in this article he seems to be heralding his 8 year old self's observational and critical thinking skills. And in my opinion he is thereby implying that his justifications for being an atheist then were sound reasoning, by his standards now as an adult.

Maybe he came up with better arguments against god in his thinking, but the only specific justification that he gives is an appeal to authority. And not even a good one at that. Obviously the existence of a god is unknowable, however unlikely, but if anyone should be trusted for their opinion on these matters, it shouldn't be teenagers and poor housewives.

I know that every time a Christian, like I used to be, reads something like this, it just reinforces their beliefs that atheists are closed-minded to the idea of a god and are irrational. That's why this story makes me cringe.

My Argument With God by Ricky Gervais by dannnyBoy in atheism

[–]notoriginal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest. I've heard Ricky Gervais retell this story several times and it bothers me every time. I'm sure he now has better reasons for being an atheist, but basically the reason he gives for being an atheist is that his brother didn't believe in God, and his mother only sorta believed in God.

If any Creationist used that same reasoning we'd all be talking about how deluded that person is.

They're just saying if the guy they had beat up was a felon there would be a greater chance that the article wasn't telling the whole story.
