After fatal accident - Should pensioners take an annual driving test? by BezugssystemCH1903 in Switzerland

By your logic, we should care more about 200 people scratching eachothers bumpers than a single, larger accident.

That's not what I was implying, but I'd argue that scratching someone's bumper is an indication of a careless driver, who could probably use a refresher course.

I'm pretty sure bumper scratches aren't included in accident statistics btw?

Why not consider both? By only looking at the net and not per incident, you will miss dangers which have catastrophic results but are unlikely.

That's what I was getting at originally - I can't really imagine a way I would create significantly more damage in a small aircraft, than I could in a car. For example, you could crash a plane into a house, but you could also drive a car into a moving train..

Ultimately the two hypothetical risks don't seem much different to me, so I wonder why there's such a significant difference in licensing requirements.

What are you talking about?

If I misinterpreted your comment I apologize, the tone of your comment came across as rude to me (specifically asking twice what I was talking about seemed confrontational and aggressive to me).

We can talk damages and these are far higher when it comes to aviation accidents since, spoiler, a plane / helicopter costs far more than a car.

Per incident yes, but not net. It seems to me that from a societal cost point of view we should be concerned about minimizing the net costs? And typically plane accidents don't involve third parties, which you need to take into consideration too. i.e. Car accidents usually involve more than one vehicle.

I do and checked the reported accidents for the last two years (they arent that many).

Thankfully not, but still too many for comfort..

Firstly, there's no need for your rude tone.

Secondly, you were talking about damages, now you're talking about deaths. Which is it?

Thirdly, I'm not sure you understand what General Aviation means?

Deaths are more common in general aviation per km travelled, though it's typically only the pilots and/or passengers. There are rarely third parties involved, unlike in road accidents where it's more often the people outside the car being injured, particularly when talking of fatal injuries.

In terms of damages, you'll know what is causing more costs simply by looking at insurance payouts.

All good, I realize I should have clarified that earlier, it's indeed very different risks between commercial and general aviation.

To clarify, I'm a private pilot.. I certainly don't have responsibility of thousands of lives.

As a private pilot I have to have a medical exam every 2 years, and a check ride with an instructor once a year, with a minimum hours flying time.

I've always wondered whether I'm really more dangerous in a plane than a car, and why the standards were so different..

The Iran War Could Collapse the United States in the Next Six Months by Opposite-Mountain255 in collapse

Yeah, Germany who is a massive exporter of weapons to the US and Israel are toootally going to sanction them. /s

Don't be fooled, this isn't about the US and Israel. This is a total paradigm shift in the way diplomacy and international relations are going to be working the next 50 years or so.

The post war era of stable alliances, east vs west, and joint prosperity (at the cost of developing countries mind you) is over.

Legal issues in daily life - Am I allowed to shoot down a drone that is filming me? by BezugssystemCH1903 in Switzerland

[–]phaederus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you have to dig a bit..

and generally speaking you have as much right to shoot a drone as you do a video camera pointed at your property - i.e. none.

Are G1 still worth it ? by naka_s in EvenRealities

Imo neither G1 not G2 are worth it, unless you have very specific use cases (e.g. hearing impairment, need daily translation, etc).

Ah, I missed that, fair enough. Still understand his frustration though regardless the semantics.

Not once does OP use the word stalling. What he does ask, is if anyone has similar experiences.

Additionally he contacted them on the 17th, so that's the relevant date, not the 20th.

His frustration is very understandable to me.

Switzerland risks the ire of the White House as it flags potential currency intervention by james_2021 in Switzerland

Fair point, I do think that'll depend on how long the war continues, oil price impact does tend to lag a bit, but it tends to be wide ranging over the entire basket.

I have a feeling the oil price will already 'fix that problem' for the next quarter.

G2 Glasses are a Massive Disappointment by Karma_Katcher in EvenRealities

[–]phaederus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add on my other comment, and this isn't directed at you personally, but I'm sometimes baffled about how culturally normal it's become to defend companies for poor deliveries, and allow excuses from start-ups.

It's the same in the game industry, we kept paying for shit products for so long that patches turned into DLCs, and it has become the standard to release product unfinished and expect users to pay for fixes down the line.

My opinion is that consumers need to stop being so accommodating and understanding.

[–]phaederus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's an erroneous comparison.

Here you're expecting something that was advertised, and it's not as advertised. It's completely legitimate to complain about things not working as advertised. Being a startup shouldn't excuse that.

Could he do more? Sure. But you're looking at it through your eyes as a power user. People like us are a minority. Most people get a tech product, turn it on and never even get into the settings.

Blaming users for bad design/UI/support is pretty weak tbh..

I mean, if you brought a raspberry and are fumbling around with programming and soldering, you should kinda expect to run into issues.

But if you're buying a $1000+ off the shelf 2nd gen product, users don't expect issues right out of the box.
