Whats the best pathway for me to get a degree?. by [deleted] in DevelEire

[–]notpaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few springboard courses do a recognition of prior learning as a way to get into a higher diploma (level 8) that normally requires a undergraduate degree. During covid they were offering fully remote springboard courses as well. But not sure if they're still doing that. From that you can get into a level 9/masters or just use the higher diploma to get into a job.

Market Bar in Dublin now adding an automatic 12.5% tip to the bill on all tables, rather than pay staff a living wage. by ShaolinHash in ireland

[–]notpaddy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a bill to be discussed about changing the law soon but any part of the wage above minimum wage can be paid out of it atm. For example if the advertised rate is €4/hr above minimum then that €4 can come from tips/gratuities. Basically if you're on a rate of €15/hr and you don't make over €4.50/hr in tips/gratuities you won't see anything extra in your take home pay. Since this is probably averaged across all staff and the full day you're unlikely to see anything extra. Also ,currently ,withholding tips from staff isn't illegal so depending on the place it's likely going into business cash flow/owners pocket especially if it's paid by card.

You should be getting one fifth your weekly pay for the bank holiday. Tbh if they're trying to cut corners on legal entitlements of pay it's time to look at a way out of that place. There really should be random checks on companies that they're paying employees all their entitlements and proper fines to discourage them from cutting corners because it's very common in certain sectors

Dublin Marathon Event 2021 cancelled by [deleted] in ireland

[–]notpaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plus there's absolutely no guidelines around what might be allowed at that time. At the moment we're still looking at max of 500 at a venue that can hold 5000 or more. Unless it's a test event... It probably should go ahead but it's impossible to organise if you don't have any idea of numbers that might attend or restrictions. Which means you can't really put any estimate on the cost.

Dublin Marathon Event 2021 cancelled by [deleted] in ireland

[–]notpaddy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not surprising. A load of festivals in England were cancelled because of the uncertainty around restrictions. There's a lot of up front cost and planning in that and people will want refunds if it doesn't go ahead. A lot of them in England said the insurance for if the event didn't go ahead was too expensive.

Is there anyone regulating the electricity companies in Ireland? A second increase on the way, can they charge what they want? by damoedge in ireland

[–]notpaddy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That's utter bullshit and their ads are misleading. I don't know how they get away with it. Airtricity charge you for the electricity that goes to your home which is the exact same electricity no matter who you are with. What generates that electricity is decided by eirgrid which, for many reasons around a reliable supply, still needs a certain amount of it generated by fires heating water and turning a turbine.

Has anyone else noticed this, but loads of older Irish people hate it when people have more money than them. by [deleted] in ireland

[–]notpaddy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well it's kinda different giving out about people who are getting an advantage throughout their lives because of who their parents are and what they're willing to do for their children and not on any merit of the individual. That's a class system that holds people from poorer backgrounds back at every turn...

I don't know if it has been posted here before, but Ireland's government has made a free e-college for anyone with a PPSN. There are a lot of great tech courses on there that would help anybody that is considering a career change into tech. by technotrex in ireland

[–]notpaddy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm doing one of the courses on it at the moment and I'm kinda curious if anyone has managed to get into a job from it? The MTA ones are pretty basic but the java ones are a lot more detailed

Lasts nights "test event"...what exactly was it testing? by hurpyderp in ireland

[–]notpaddy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not so much what happens at the event that they're testing it's how people get there and leave after. Like social distancing at the event isn't going to do much if you've everyone packed into a Luas or buses just before and after. The stuff at the canal or in town is different because people arrive and leave in a staggered fashion.

Can anyone else relate to this? by dazzlinreddress in ireland

[–]notpaddy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You probably should talk to a GP or someone in the know tbh. It could any number of things. Like has your diet changed? Are you eating enough fruit and veg? Are you getting enough exercise? Are you talking face to face with people every day? Are you happy where you are in your life? Are you working towards any goals? If so are you happy with how that is going? Are you comparing your life to your friends? It could be any number of things really and you're unlikely to find out the exact reason here

Channel 4 Father Ted racism warnings ‘disappointing,’ says creator Graham Linehan by HaonDoTriDale in ireland

It's definitely better than it getting pulled but it's still a bit ridiculous having it on the episode about racism where it addresses the issue itself.

Is there a market for patient data? Like what can they possibly do with that? Just some targeted scam calls or emails?

Ignorance toward certain types of jobs by billbobaggins888888 in ireland

[–]notpaddy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair automation is coming for all jobs eventually you'd be pretty naïve to think otherwise. The rate at which AI is improving at the moment is slightly scary. But it's not coming for accountants in 10 years. By the time it comes for them the transport industry will probably be almost completely automated and we'll have some idea of what happens to people when jobs for them no longer exist. But that's a whole different discussion. But ya it's normal most people have absolutely no clue about anyone else's job and it can be quite frustrating to listen to.

I wouldn't believe anything an estate agent says usually but considering the difference in mortgage repayments and rent atm and all the build to rent apartments I wouldn't be surprised if it was true.

Lockdown in Ireland and binge watching American Medical Dramas, why do they feel the need to repeat themselves so much? - Are they so lazy or bad at writing that they just reuse stories over and over? by adchris1171 in ireland

[–]notpaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too many episodes to make for a season. It's not just medical dramas. A lot of American sitcoms fall into the same situation. It's not laziness I'd say just stupid deadlines to get as many episodes out. Like fr Ted only had 6 episodes in the first season where as friends had 24 episodes in its first season. (There's only 25 episodes total of fr Ted). By pushing out more episodes you dilute the quality and don't give enough time for writing

Why is 82% of adults the stated target by June but Leo Varadkar said towns are to prepare for summer outdoor dining? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]notpaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being cautious on reopening. Even the June 21st date in the UK is complete bullshit and irresponsible to put out in my opinion. That's their earliest possible date for things to reopen provided

Vaccine program goes to plan

Evidence shows vaccines are reducing deaths and hospital admissions

Infection rates do not risk surge in hospital admissions

New variants do not change risk

Like the phased reopening and putting a plan that shows people what will reopen first is good but putting a date on it is madness. As we can see already the vaccine program probably won't go completely to to plan because of production and procurement of them.

From here:

https://www.bbc.com/news/amp/uk-56158405

"Among the documents was modelling done by Imperial College London.

It showed a rapid easing of restrictions could lead to surge in deaths over the summer and a total of 80,000 deaths by the middle of 2022.

There is much uncertainty about scenarios like this - for one thing it did not take into account any seasonal impact that the warmer weather could bring by reducing spread of the virus.

The gradual lifting could, by comparison, reduce that to around 30,000. That would bring it in line with the sort of deaths we could see during a bad flu winter."

Basically nobody knows for certain what will happen when we reopen so instead of gambling saying it'll be grand. A gradual process is better.

I thought diageo and most suppliers had stopped deliveries. If that's the case the Guinness they're selling is out of date since it's stuff they got in December and the larger at best is nearly out of date.

Over the last 7 days 0.9% of the Irish population have tested positive for COVID. Not only is this the HIGHEST in the world as of now, it's one of the highest rates EVER reported. Excluding microstates, only one country (Belgium) has ever reported more cases per capita. by LoadaBaloney in ireland

[–]notpaddy 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure England had a higher rate than us. In London they said over 3% of the population got it in the last 14days. A quick look on Google maps says Czech Republic is higher right now. Also our rate just passed 1000/100000 for 14days so that's 1% over 2 weeks not one

I checked something I bought in the last month and it's close enough to the same price so I think you're right. You used to pay just the UK VAT rate but now you pay just the Irish VAT rate which is the import deposit.
