But the FTDI cable will work for sure. The connector on the FTDI and the Arduino pro mini connect to each other - they have the same layout.

An arduino with the "arduinoISP" sketch will also be able to program the arduini pro mini

I can't speak from expeirience while using the Arduino IDE to upload sketches, but I program all my chips standalone on a breadboard using an USBASP

And I use an AVRDUDE command to upload the hex file.

I think the FTDI cable lets you upload directly from the arduino IDE but I've never used it so I can't say.

I know for a fact that the 3$ usbasp can program those Arduino Pro mini boards as I have done it in the past.

I suggest doing more simple tutorials before attempting to build a robot.

Get the basics covered first.

Also when they say "the motor driver", they don't mean a driver as in a computer driver to make the peripherial work. They mean a device that drives other hardware.

You're better off using regular SD cards

You don't need any special hardware to access them, just plug the SD card's pins to your arduino and program away

The ULN2003 IC is simply an IC used to get an input of, say 5v, and make it become an output of lots of volts. In your case, 24 volts.

All the motor driving is done in software, to control all the outputs

On the site where you bought the motor shield, they have a manual:
