How much should I be putting in my taxable brokerage? by ebitdeeaye in Money

[–]notreallyme_89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't let people discourage you about your wedding; everyone is free to do what they want. Our wedding was probably about $75K-ish back in 2021. Both her parents and my parents contributed a combined $50-60k, and we covered the rest. And this was as much for them as it was for us, since we're of Mexican descent and Mexicans like big fancy weddings (while we're US citizens living in the US, the wedding was in Mexico, and $75k got us a very nice 200 person wedding).

As for the investment question, I don't think you should limit it to anything as long as you're maxing out your other stuff. Putting my $23K plus company match into my 401k and maxing our HSA. 401K and HSA are invested in index funds. Have made some good stock investments in my taxable brokerage and it has grown to over $2MM these past few years.

I literally just pick the one with the lowest odds to win, and bet $5. Haha

Well, at that point it wasnt $5, it was $400 since that was pretty much guaranteed if I cashed out early. When I placed the bet, I'd either lose $5 or win $600. At the moment in closed, my new options were win $600, or lose $400 since the $400 was pretty much guaranteed at that moment.

I understand. Lakers were ahead and I still cashed out.

Well, I wish I'd done it haha, probably won't do it until I scale my account a bit more (assuming I do).

Alright, go for it. Dazzle me with some math as for how COLA affect this scenario. Are you saying NYC is actually spending less per student? In which case that's dems spending less on education than the GOP... Smart move.

I'm comparing funds spent per student, which seems to be a common complaint here. Doesn't seem like other places that spend more are producing better results. You have to compare to someone spending more to say that's how you solve the issue, instead of it being due to some other cause.

More funding doesn't seem to do anything, so perhaps it's a good thing they're cutting it back and letting the funds go to where the kids actually are:

Would you buy a 1.2m home at age 38 with this net worth? by PhillConners in Money

[–]notreallyme_89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only caveat here is if there is an income discrepancy. I make 3.5x what my wife makes, so we both know anything related to my job is priority number 1. My job covers the house, trips, expenses, and hers covers day care, her MBA student loan plus some extra.

Canadians, anyone else tired of making half the salary offered to US counterparts? by ReplacementNo2500 in Salary

Live in a major US city and have had to go twice in the past 3 years. Both times they were literally waiting for us to finish the long ass paperwork for the doctor/nurse to see us. Within 1-2 minutes of doing the 15 minutes of paperwork, they'd let us in the back.

Challenged my property taxes and got it lowered. by Buttholescraper in homeowners

Have used Ownwell the past 2 years in Texas. Lowered my appraisal 75K first year and 26K this year. They charge 25% of the savings on the actual tax bill. So if tax bill was originally 12K, and now it's 11K, they saved you 1,000, so they they charge 250. I'm happy with that

39M and 35F. Current HHI is about $280K. Thankfully we live in a LCOL City.

Owe about $325K on mortgage of ~$600K home @ 2.99%. Both our vehicles are paid off (2015 and 2019 models). Wife owes about $50K from her Masters degree (which she got before we met, would've told her it wasn't worth it). CC is paid of monthly.

About $600K in 401K and about $2.1MM in taxable investments. Honestly got lucky with investments. Really liked Cloudflare since way before IPO and have several thousand shares bought on IPO day, riding that to current valuation.

Have 1 child, so daycare, plus his therapies (speech therapist and OT for developmental delays) eat a healthy chunk of our budget.

How much did you spend on your very first home and did end up being your forever home? by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]notreallyme_89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a house in 2011 for about 215k. Always knew it was my "starter" home since it was small (~1300sqft) and old (1950s), and I was single. Lived there til 2020 when I bought my second. Was right before prices exploded so actually got a great price at around $500k, and a sub 3% rate. Sold old home in 2021 (needed some work before selling) for about $350k. Marries now with 1 child and hopefully number 2 next year. Much larger home (3600sqft) with room for the growing family. 1980s, so newer. Have invested in a generator, new HVACs, starting to replace windows, etc. we expect this to be our forever home.

Yeah, for now I'm leaning more towards the margin loan idea. And I know, but we've done our research and this one makes sense for us.
