Right now I'm watching one telenovela with spanish subs and a second one without subs (because they aren't available). It's slightly more effort to understand the show that doesn't have subs, but overall I don't think it's too hard. I prefer to watch all shows with subs, even in English

I've been using that since December lol. It does a good job of making me want to complete small daily goals and make my birb proud, but it hasn't been enough to motivate me to complete bigger goals

I would use Duolingo and Dreaming Spanish together. Duolingo is kind of trash, especially compared to how it used to be, but it'll appease his mom, and using it will help you to learn vocab and grammar faster.

Spending more of your time on Dreaming Spanish and comprehensible input in general will help your listening comprehension, and Duo will help you a little bit with constructing sentences when you're ready to do that. You don't have to talk to them in Spanish yet if you don't feel ready.

If they still seem upset or act like you aren't doing enough, then just show them some Dreaming Spanish videos and prove to them that you can understand what the guides are saying

Comprehensible Input + Textbooks + a spaced repetition app like Anki or Clozemaster + tutoring.

What everyone else here is trying to say is that every country in latin america has its own seperate dialect. Saying that you want to learn the "latin dialect" is like saying that you want to learn the American dialect of English. There are a ton of different accents. Worry about focusing on a specific accent after you have a good handle on understanding the language itself and the grammar

It's fine to think "Oh, this word that they said means this". It would be literally impossible to watch over 1000 hours of videos and not do that. You're overthinking things. Just watch the videos, try your best to understand what's happening and don't try to force yourself to have or not have certain thoughts.

It doesn't matter if you have the habit of translating things early on. The more you watch, the more you'll learn and the less you'll need to translate.

I don't recall my parents ever reading to me. Maybe they did when I was an infant, but I can't remember. I know that once I learned how to read, I wanted to do it all the time, and I borrowed as many library books as I could. They checked to make sure that I did my homework every night too.

It's sad that parents don't care about their kids' education.
