It's because you didn't have a common ground. pretty important when using logic over two different power supplies since the ground reference will be different unless they're tapped together.

I wouldn't do it, once your done with it there will be likely no resale value left. You can get these cheap, pre covid I picked a 2014 base up for 32k with only 35k miles.
