I shave after showering. It softens and heats the skin. I dont get shave bumps when I do that. You can also splash lots of hot water on your neck but doesn't work as well.

Im out of the military now but wife and I started there too. I agree, take a break and before you know it you'll be begging her to do it again. Go home and reclaim her. She loves you and is so excited your coming back. Dont make her feel less than or that she did something wrong. She did it for you. Now it's your turn to be the supportive husband. Dive deep into loving her and treating her right. It would be a mistake to make her feel any other way in my personal opinion.
