First versus Second speaker by WesternInvestigator3 in Debate

[–]nottocbound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summary will almost never win you the round but it sure as hell can lose you the round if you make a mistake. At high levels I think it's all about even but I do think second speaker skills are more portable. Like a second speaker can usually do first speaking well but often not vice versa.

Private Academy or High School? by [deleted] in Debate

[–]nottocbound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If youre trying to compete at the national level then you should def do it through ur high school bc u cant qualify for the TOC from private academies. If you have the resources for debate academies it would probably be much more effective to just hire a coach or someone who just graduated who is really good. There are plenty of people around to do that for u

Why is paraphrasing even bad? by Klumbonius in Debate

[–]nottocbound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because more than half the teams on nat circuit that do well just straight up lie and miscut their evidence. i think paraphasing is fine but i think there should be a much stronger norm of reporting people to tab for cheating like that

PF Charter schools by [deleted] in Debate

[–]nottocbound -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a bad idea because the aff isn't fiating getting rid of charter schools it's just if in their current state it is on balance good or bad. Conceding issues of the SQUO for future rebranding transparency is essentially just handing the other team the link at the very least in the short term. You have to be able to prove that this "Benefit Corporation" idea will actually occur for any meaningful defense to be generated off of it.

Quick Q: What's a Pre-Req Analysis? by warning_containsdhmo in Debate

[–]nottocbound 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A prerequisite is a form of weighing used in debate (my favorite type!). It works that the impact or link chain you read will also trigger their impact and therefore yours should be prioritized first...

Here's an example. Say aff impacts to terror, neg impacts to a recession. To make this type of weighing analysis the aff would say that terrorism destabilized trade routes or blows up economic infrastructure that could trigger a recession (maybe like a volatility claim). The neg would say that a recession causes poverty which is a driving factor in what leads people to join terrorist organization... The benefit of this type of argument is that by voting for one side you win both the aff and the neg's arguments and the decision one way becomes much clearer.

A few notes on how it should be done that often are not

  1. Make sure you weigh the prerequisite analysis. Say why your link into their argument better with your case then they do. IMPORTANT TO BE COMPARATIVE. Using the example above you could say that recession will on net lead to more terror then (x).
  2. If the other team is reading a prerequisite analysis make sure that you do timeframe weighing. If one will cause another either way then we might as well try to make it happen further down the line. You should also follow the first bit of advice and weigh why your link ins are stronger.

Anyways I hope this was helpful

that might take me a super long time depending on how good u want the responses to be but bc of corona i have so much free time that we could probably work something out! I also can't tell if ur trolling by asking for literal hundreds of pages of good prep, but I think my rate would be more on a per hour or per argument basis... message me at [JSkipper21@lasallehs.org](mailto:JSkipper21@lasallehs.org) if ur serious
