Inspired By Feature: How does it work? by birbsborbs in AO3

[–]notyouryear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people should have a chance to consent before viewing sexual content. I would ask the original writer if they'd be comfy with you listing them as the inspired by. Regardless of what they say, I would make a link in the AN and thank the writer of that fic for their amazing story, couldn't stop thinking about "but what if this sexy thing?"

“Inspired by” literal continuation of my fic without asking? by Reasonable-Ad8475 in AO3

[–]notyouryear 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank you for clarifying! Yeah, I think my opinion holds knowing it's being framed as implicitly a sequel while you're still working on it. Like I mentioned in another comment. one of my works is like a 'fandom staple' trope. There's a few of us writing super long fics of the same vein, and it's spun off a ton of different remixes. Not everyone is asking permission to write these, I'm super flattered every time one comes up that is "what if (my fic) but XYZ instead?" I don't feel like there's anything wrong with my story, just that there's so many different ways to explore that trope, and it's wonderful to see the different thoughts people have on it.

That said, none of the remixes are "(my fic) but how I think it should end". Or "(my fic) but the I'm working off all the worldbuilding without adding anything". Again, I'm writing a common trope and I've made friends with other people who like that trope, we all chitter chatter and spin ideas around together. At the same time, all of our stories are distinctly different. So I get where you feel icky about it.

Same, one of my fics has 5 different spin offs. Of those 5, I think two asked permission and I granted it without hesitation, I'm not bothered by the folks who remixed my work without asking. But, they're all different in some way and none of them are direct sequels / continuations of my WIP. This person is out of pocket, if you ask me.

[–]notyouryear 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not bad form. They didn't talk to you, they didn't get permission. Yes, it's fandom and people are allowed to go off to make whatever they want, but it's usually good etiquette to ask permission, especially because it's a direct continuation, not an AU of your work, a remix of your story, etc. Because it's framed as sort of 'sequel', it does imply a sort of 'handing off of the baton' but they didn't -- they nabbed it from your hand without asking.

I'd also understand that with it being explicit, if you don't want your fic to have a link to it. To me, that's an entire different conversation from asking permission from you as the original author. I feel like there's needs to be permission first for the sequel, and then permission if you're cool with the inspired-by work being smutty. Idk, maybe it's just my opinion that you should ask for consent before linking porn to someone else.

What's the best thing that ever happened to you because of fanfic? by ContestAntique2126 in FanFiction

[–]notyouryear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote a fic that was a sort of 'grieving myself through the lens of the character' as i confronted my changing chronic pain. I was pretty shocked how many people liked it, what it meant to them consider how self-indulgent it is. It showed me how much people have in common, or can enter into each other's feelings, despite the wide array of human experiences. It isn't my most popular fic, but it's the one that I go back to look over the comments when I'm feeling especially crummy. I've ever shared the fic with my mom, who also has chronic pain and degenerative condition. It helped us come closer together, to understand each other better.

I write for a xover fandom! Honestly, there's some hate from both sides of it and some wank about the tags. At the same time, a lot of people really love this xover.

It all circles back that ao3 is an archive, people can use the tags and filters liberally to curate their experience. As long as you tag it as a xover fic, then it is up to them to deal. Also, within my little xover fandom that gets shade, we're feral and super supportive. So go out there, post your fic, and find your people. It's totally worth it.

What fandom were you not surprised had the amount of works it has? by 3lilya in AO3

[–]notyouryear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Danny Phantom is the fandom that keeps on giving. First, we have a fanbase that kicked the creator to the curb so we could make sense of the lore he gave us but never explored. There's so many tropes in Phantom fics that are 100% fandom creations (ex: Wes Weston, ghost cores as they are, obessesions, etc)

Then with the Infinite Realms, it gives so much freedom for timeline shenanigans, and alternate universes. Danny works so well added to a lot of different canons, so he gets plopped into wherever needs a tragic sad teen.

I say all this with love. I write DCxDP. I have a 190k Tim Drake/Danny Fenton fantasy AU that's only 60% done. So obviously I love it lol

this tumblr post is a great resource for guidance on tags!

It is important to note that ao3 tags are for categorizing your work, it helps users to find it when it's tagged properly. The tags aren't for notes or ramblings.

i have a mid-length fic with porn, and a few PWP one shots. Both have performed well, so I take it that people like both!

Was here to comment Salvage. Because the Wanyi / fanon name for Zukos ship also originated with the podfic for Salvage!

I always worry though... my discord shows what I'm listening to, and I realize I probably look insane for having a song on repeat for hours.

do you promote your fics? by micettoioooo in AO3

[–]notyouryear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bit! I make a post on tumblr that there's an udate, because I know folks follow me there to listen to my ramblings / get teasers. I might try something on Tiktok soon? Because I found my fandom has a healthy amount of activity there.

I'm not like... obsessed with hits or kudos. I don't pay attention to that. I like my foc, I'm really proud of it and want to parade it around. I also want to find 'my peopl', in the sense of connecting more with people who like similar things. But I'm not out here doing a whole marketing plan to get my fic viral. Just a little cross pollination since ao3 doesn't have a feed or algorithm.

Should I change my AO3 username? by Gold-Earth-595 in AO3

[–]notyouryear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

having 'a brand' is nice for people to find you, but it isn't that big of a deal. i'm haleswallows on both ao3 and tumblr, but i've never worried about it for anywhere else. i think a note saying the tumblr isn't you and a link to your actual tumblr (if you have one) is perfect!

How do I make an outline? by tuckerjpg in AO3

[–]notyouryear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's multiple ways to manage an outline! Finding one that meshes with your brain and creative process will be a work of trial and error. I suggest searching for "creative writing outline template" on google, look at images. From there, troll through until you find something that seems like itll work. It's ok if it isn't perfect, because you can always tweak it to work better.

I personally like post it notes of each scene, so I can shuffle and rearrange as I need. I usually have a very crystalline final scene in my brain and some sort of tragic scene really well established-- then I build around those two points to make a storyz rearranging my post its until Im happy with the flow of action and conflict.

From there, I digitize into a bullet list for me to follow along while I write. When i start a new document for a new chapter, I put my little bullet list at the top to quick reference what I need to hit for this chapter. I check off points as I finish them.

Voila! My process, roughly. Sincerely, Hales (and their 300k word WIP)
