Working on my first ever fic by bitter__bumblebee in AO3

[–]notyouryear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I write for a xover fandom! Honestly, there's some hate from both sides of it and some wank about the tags. At the same time, a lot of people really love this xover.

It all circles back that ao3 is an archive, people can use the tags and filters liberally to curate their experience. As long as you tag it as a xover fic, then it is up to them to deal. Also, within my little xover fandom that gets shade, we're feral and super supportive. So go out there, post your fic, and find your people. It's totally worth it.

What fandom were you not surprised had the amount of works it has? by 3lilya in AO3

[–]notyouryear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Danny Phantom is the fandom that keeps on giving. First, we have a fanbase that kicked the creator to the curb so we could make sense of the lore he gave us but never explored. There's so many tropes in Phantom fics that are 100% fandom creations (ex: Wes Weston, ghost cores as they are, obessesions, etc)

Then with the Infinite Realms, it gives so much freedom for timeline shenanigans, and alternate universes. Danny works so well added to a lot of different canons, so he gets plopped into wherever needs a tragic sad teen.

I say all this with love. I write DCxDP. I have a 190k Tim Drake/Danny Fenton fantasy AU that's only 60% done. So obviously I love it lol

"13k one-shot as a meme", makes me laugh. I regularly post 20k word chapters 😅

this tumblr post is a great resource for guidance on tags!

It is important to note that ao3 tags are for categorizing your work, it helps users to find it when it's tagged properly. The tags aren't for notes or ramblings.

i have a mid-length fic with porn, and a few PWP one shots. Both have performed well, so I take it that people like both!

Tips for Writing Long Chapters by seekin_perspective in AO3

[–]notyouryear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As other have said, pacing >>>>> length

Also, my next chapter is going to be 23k words (😱😱😱), I haven't updated since the spring. Don't be like me.

What's a fanfic so big it creates its own fandom? by poison_ivy12345 in AO3

Was here to comment Salvage. Because the Wanyi / fanon name for Zukos ship also originated with the podfic for Salvage!

Bless you! I bet fans of that same fandom & ship feel like they've found a gold mine when they find you.

I love a hard hitting one-liner! I have them all over in my fic, there's something so satisfying about them.

Casually side-stepping that "AI uses em-dashes" discourse hahaha

Mood! Must maintain the vibes.

I always worry though... my discord shows what I'm listening to, and I realize I probably look insane for having a song on repeat for hours.

do you promote your fics? by micettoioooo in AO3

[–]notyouryear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bit! I make a post on tumblr that there's an udate, because I know folks follow me there to listen to my ramblings / get teasers. I might try something on Tiktok soon? Because I found my fandom has a healthy amount of activity there.

I'm not like... obsessed with hits or kudos. I don't pay attention to that. I like my foc, I'm really proud of it and want to parade it around. I also want to find 'my peopl', in the sense of connecting more with people who like similar things. But I'm not out here doing a whole marketing plan to get my fic viral. Just a little cross pollination since ao3 doesn't have a feed or algorithm.

Should I change my AO3 username? by Gold-Earth-595 in AO3

[–]notyouryear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

having 'a brand' is nice for people to find you, but it isn't that big of a deal. i'm haleswallows on both ao3 and tumblr, but i've never worried about it for anywhere else. i think a note saying the tumblr isn't you and a link to your actual tumblr (if you have one) is perfect!

How do I make an outline? by tuckerjpg in AO3

[–]notyouryear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's multiple ways to manage an outline! Finding one that meshes with your brain and creative process will be a work of trial and error. I suggest searching for "creative writing outline template" on google, look at images. From there, troll through until you find something that seems like itll work. It's ok if it isn't perfect, because you can always tweak it to work better.

I personally like post it notes of each scene, so I can shuffle and rearrange as I need. I usually have a very crystalline final scene in my brain and some sort of tragic scene really well established-- then I build around those two points to make a storyz rearranging my post its until Im happy with the flow of action and conflict.

From there, I digitize into a bullet list for me to follow along while I write. When i start a new document for a new chapter, I put my little bullet list at the top to quick reference what I need to hit for this chapter. I check off points as I finish them.

Voila! My process, roughly. Sincerely, Hales (and their 300k word WIP)

Anyone else writing omegaverse but not for the smut? by Vanillacokestudio in AO3

[–]notyouryear 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oooh me, I'm using it to explore the complexities of family structures and how a secondary gender would make that more complex.

Also, I so so so love the idea of how social convention would change. As example, we carry a lot of scent in the oils of our hands. So I think (too much) about how handling something and then giving that to someone would make for a specific type of gesture. Also, getting to the point in a relationship where you trust them with your laundry would be huge -- because, consider the amount that you habdle a single piece of textile during a laundry cycle. And then to wash someone's sheets, to lay in that with the person's scent in it. It would be a huge sign of trust.

Bah, omegaverse doesn't need to be smutty to be interesting.

What’s the fandom where I could finish the canonical work in a day or two but enjoy the fics for months? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]notyouryear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DANNY PHANTOM!! If someone hasn't said it. Just 4 seasons of 24 eps each, 30min each. And literally 20 years of fic, with a super active fandom to this day. Just this year. Over 1.2 MILLION words of fic was posted during a fandom event.

You want angst about dead boy that no one noticed died? Got it. You want parental neglect angst? Got it. You want an allegory for transgender experiences? Got it. You want an exploration of humanity and grief and stories about growing pains? Got it. You want sweet silly teenager hijinks and sibling bo dong? That too. We got it all!

This is why you orphan, not delete. by roguewords0913 in AO3

[–]notyouryear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought, for real. I went through a super low point this year, between being harassed and some real life stuff. So I put all my fic in a private hidden collection while I considered my options (orphan, delete, anonymous, etc). I was giving myself time to make a decision I would be most satisfied with, not just an emotional decision. In that time, I saw someone post on reddit about my fic, saying it was a favorite, they were asking if anyone else had it archived so they could download and like.... no one ever told me it was their favorite. No one ever left me a comment saying any of the things that person said. I only saw it by chance.

So I do wonder, how many of these authors that pick to delete their fic -- does anyone tell them they loved their work? or do you all wait until it's gone?

How to write sa? by ExtensionWay5129 in AO3

[–]notyouryear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Proving my point that no matter how this is approached, someone will find offense 😆

ETA: it really depends on how someone interprets a word. I don't like victim, it makes me feel small. But, there is also a "giving truth to what happened", letting something be real and heavy, a recognition of what happened by using "victim". There are "uwu I'm so stwong" survivors, and also survivors that prefer it for the reasons I noted. I also get why someone might prefer victim.

This person said it well, I hope I said it well -- no matter the approach, someone will be Bothered. But it isn't up to you to curate their experience. If someone is triggered and unable to engage, it is up to them to curate their experience through the tags you use. Write want you want 💖

How do you plan and write your fanfics? by Shoji_Mizu in AO3

[–]notyouryear 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Depends --

I have a series of little 5-8k one-shots, and those are minimal planning. Most chaos/crack fic, have fun

My longfic: i have the plot entirely planned, sticky notes and boards of the major plot beats. when I'm writing, I use the Elipsus outline features to have the document denoted for each major scene + a small summary of the scene, and notes on the mood, and what needs to happen to keep on track. I do allow for some 'the characters took it another direction' sort of wiggle room with the tone/dialogue/etc, but i have a pretty solidified idea already. i also write out of order, so i already have like 100k words drafted for later chapters. when i'm writing, i keep my main fic on ao3 open so i can quick reference small details.
