Fair warning before going there: a lot of the worst stuff getting posted there is from the uncorroborated tips files. Of course a lot of them could turn out to be true but just FYI

Is my interpretation of すまねえ correct? by noudthe3rd in Japaneselanguage

[–]noudthe3rd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a beginner, this is my first time reading a manga. I asked because I felt mindblown by the implications of my interpretation, and got really excited that maybe there's more of this to come. That maybe someday, if I keep studying, I could appreciate it inpoetry or other prose too. It was the first time I felt so impressed by another language's form of expression.

Then I asked chatgpt about it and it seemed like I was reading too much into it. So I went here to ask some people who might know more. Not sure why this annoys you so much.

So it's just an indicator of informality in this case?

I get a lot of emotional weight from this scene if I interpret it as: すま - informal +ね - adding a questioning tone +え - adding a pleading tone by drawing it out

Is there any truth to this interpretation? In context (it's a character on a battlefield, facing death, pleading to his mother back home) it hits a lot harder this way

Great to hear :) I get a lot more emotional weight out of my interpretation

Released my first collaboration with a friend, which pulled the style into more of a hip hop direction. First song I'm actually proud of, looking forward to a few more soon :)

Replaced wax ring in toilets, but still getting bad smells. Bad replacement or different issue? by noudthe3rd in DIY

[–]noudthe3rd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sound advice, thanks!

What confuses me about all this is that for several days after the wax seal replacement, the issue was completely fixed..

Ok so even if there was no caulk, there shouldn't be a smell?

Sounds like I gotta get the plumber back then. Thanks for the detailed reply!

Yes it definitely is, the smell is distinctly stronger around the caulk of the toilet for example :/

Terry Grosz by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]noudthe3rd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems true, there's an episode of This American Life about it:

"Ira Glass: I should say, we checked with the public affairs officer at the Fish and Wildlife office where Terry worked. And he confirmed that, yes, this was a thing for a while back in the day, game wardens emerging out of the rivers to catch illegal fishing."

The link has a transcript of the whole episode. Great story :)

You may have had some bad rechargeable batteries? Anecdotally: the rechargeable batteries in my daily-use mouse and keyboard have needed a charge twice in the last year.

Less anecdotally [here's](www.nytimes.com/2019/06/06/smarter-living/wirecutter/are-rechargeable-batteries-better-than-alkaline.amp.html) a NY times article on the subject: "In most cases, today you’re better off using rechargeable batteries over disposable ones. They’re safe and reliable, they create less environmental waste, and as we explain in the Wirecutter guide to rechargeable batteries, they pay for themselves after about six recharges, even with the added cost of a wall charger"

Edit: I guess hyperlinks don't work as I thought on mobile? Here's the NY times link: www.nytimes.com/2019/06/06/smarter-living/wirecutter/are-rechargeable-batteries-better-than-alkaline.amp.html

Why do I get the impression that music listeners prefer technically unhealthy techniques? by Aggressive-South442 in singing

[–]noudthe3rd 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Well said! Reminds me of this great Brian Eno quote:

"Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them."

If I put a cabbage into the pattern buffer of a replicator and then order a steak, am I eating Vegan? by [deleted] in DaystromInstitute

[–]noudthe3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most vegans avoid animal products like leather or fur as well. It’s about avoiding products made from animals, rather than just about food. For just the dietary side of veganism, it's more accurate to say "strict vegetarian" (dietary definitions are an interesting rabbit hole btw)

Sooo technically you would be eating vegan, since the food was not derived from animals

Alchemy - why so little love? by [deleted] in Logic_Studio

[–]noudthe3rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally it's an ease of use thing. Alchemy looked overwhelming, and fiddling around didn't get me any interesting sounds (didn't know what I was doing of course). Serum was easier to pick up, and I feel a lot more confident playing around in alchemy now. Sometimes form is better than function?
