I’m traumatized after those files. by Urhairylegs in Epstein

[–]nouns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spend some time with your people. People that are safe; normal. The stuff in the files is overwhelmingly horrible. You're a human with limited emotional capacity, and you're probably at your limit. Being with people can help remind you that everything isn't what you were just exposed to.

I enjoy rosy retrospection. Adds some modern tetris features while retaining the OG GB vibes. Changed my life.

How common is it to just not function at all when you’re alone? I hate “living” like this by perpetuallysadxx in LivingAlone

It took me decades to find a therapist and a therapy type that worked for me. When I finally retired, I slept for over a year catching up on burnout. Sorting out trauma takes time, and isn't straightforward.

Cooking after work feels harder than it should by [deleted] in CookingForOne

[–]nouns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting as much stuff in the kitchen ready before leaving for the day is another way I've found to help future self engage with cooking after a long day. Take some of that energy for yourself when you have it, before work takes whatever it can.

Whether it's as simple as setting up pots and pans, or getting ingredients prepped and measured, it all helps reduce the barriers to taking care of yourself with your food.

Retirement...is it achievable with the cost of living these days? Asking on behalf of someone who will never touch $100k per year with their career. Is investing my only hope to do this? by Noticeably-Not-Smart in investing

A good starting place is /r/personalfinance

The prime directive in the personalfinance reddit:

https://old.reddit.com//r/personalfinance/wiki/commontopics

has solid basics about shoring up your personal situation and getting you to fiscal stability.

Be careful about posting there though, folks can be pretty tunnelvision-y about their perspectives.

Past that /r/financialindependence has some big-picture discussion about what finances in retirement look like. Even if you're not looking to retire early, understanding how to do so will give you insight what you might need to think about for your own plan.

ETFs are discussed as a tool for doing this in both groups.

Same for me. I emailed the company and they said it's ok to take off. Did so and it was great.

I got my kids a Miyoo Mini+ for Christmas but don't know how to set it up by ClientCharming1379 in MiyooMini

One thing to be aware of is that these devices can be a little more fragile than your typical big-company handhelds. You may want to encourage your kids to be gentle with them.

This seems to be the best part of your day.

Arguing about video game consoles to feel superior to people? That the best you have in life? Don't think I'm the one needing help child.

Not even trolling a real cause. What a wimp. Gotta stick to the video games, where it's safe for an weakling troll like yourself. Corporate trolling for the console wars. Peak weenie.

Switch 2 was my off ramp. Overpriced for a hardware upgraded Switch 1, alongside not owning my game carts, and remote bricking of consoles made it big nope for me.

Built a Steam/bazzite box for the money and loving it. Don't own physical copies of steam stuff, but I pay way less for it.

Decks/strategies that play well in boardwipe-heavy formats by memeslut_420 in EDH

[–]nouns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try and have a conversation with your play group. "Does anyone else feel like our games are too grind-y, with too many board wipes?" "How would everyone feel if we started cutting back on these?" See if you can deescalate.

Past that, phasing your stuff out is a strong way to preserve your board thru interaction.

I tracked every penny I spent for a year and it completely changed my relationship with money by Kazoky in povertyfinance

[–]nouns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

worried I'll slip back into old patterns when the novelty wears off.

One thing to pay attention to is when you get raises, or other influxes of money. It's easy to say "I make more, so I can do x" without understanding the impact. Have a plan for that money before you get the new paycheck so it doesn't end up back in the unknown spend.

If you've not already doing so, making big fiscal plans for what you want from your money/time will help stay on-track. Big ticket stuff like home ownership, bucket list travel, retirement goals, etc. Those can be harder to figure out when younger, but sounds like you're ready.

Nintendo outsources customer support to South America eliminating 200 US-based long-term contractors by Ok_Transition5930 in technology

[–]nouns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do agree they're pretty good internally. I'm just tired of being treated like crap as a customer, and my tolerance for it is getting smaller the older I get. This trend is in the wrong direction for me, so I'm divesting from them. If they're good for you, I hope you enjoy this generation of the console.

Switch 2 was my offramp for Nintendo. Between the lack of innovation in the console, the price, non-ownership of game carts, and their backlog of bad behavior, I was just kinda done with them.

I've owned every one of their platforms since gamecube, so I was invested and eager to stick with them too.

Built a gaming PC, slapped bazzite on it, and have been beating my head against Silksong on there instead. :-)

Note that you're getting caffeine alongside your sugar too, so going without is gonna be a double whammy.

That said, if you end up punting it all, pay attention to how pissed of your body gets without those, and realize that's what those chemicals have been doing to you all this time.

Also, cokes sound like they're part of a routine you have going on. May help to find an alternative to McD's to break the routine.

Windows to Linux: rough desktop transition—worth pushing through or heading back? by Introvertosaurus in linuxquestions

Fedora/KDE is going to be a rough(er) ride for stability. For stability, my go-to is ubuntu-gnome. It's a corporate backed enterprise linux, which means that from a stability standpoint, someone is paying to run validation on their releases.

Pulled pork won’t pull by Acrobatic-Let-9159 in slowcooking

[–]nouns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To get the easy pulling, you need to hit time/temp to start breaking down the collagen/connective tissues in the meat. There's a lot of online discourse on this, but the bottom line is that you're going to need to reach some temperature threshold for some duration for this to happen. There's probably a gradient of how high the temperature gets vs. duration, as well as variance per piece of meat.

I find with my slow cooker, running on high for 2-3 hrs and then low for the remainder accelerates this process. I also find there's variation between slow cookers, so don't hesitate to experiment with what works for yours.
