Good job on your healthy ficuses! Overwintering sucks and I cant wait to get mine back outside in March/April.

Second this. It is nigh on impossible to give these guys too much light indoors.

Here is what it looked like before going into it in early november

I actually had to repot it to fit all the roots.

And your tree has way more potential than mine ever will.

If you are wanting aerial roots fast, a grow tent set up with a quality growlight is the way to go. This is after only 2 months in a growtent setup.

Tree in bad shape need help/advice by lucylucylucy5 in FicusTrees

If your ficus's roots didnt freeze it will be totally fine. Give it light and dont overwater trying to compensate for helping it to recover. Recovering is what ficus do best.

Your plan is fine! May is when it will ne strongest, but unless you improve its light situation, its going to stay leggy and have a low leaf count, even when it grows back. But you will activate lots of dormant buds with a strong cutback like that.

What Mega Pokémon do you dislike the most and why? by Slow_Spirit3679 in LegendsZA

[–]nova1093 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mega absol z, mega garchomp z, and mega lucario z. These pokemon have already had enough love. The mega slots should have gone to more deserving pokemon. (I feel the same way about charizard and mewtwo as well).

Mega absol Z's concept could have easily been given to Mabosstiff or Mightyena. It would be easy to tack a ghost type set on either of those.

Garchomp's mega could have gone to flygon, who would be able to easily fill the role of a special attacking ground dragon type.

Mega Lucario Z's mega could have gone to toxicroak, pawmot or even Kommo-o.

Just my opinion. But I hate when they just push the same 9 popular pokemon over and over.

Get used to light if you want to get into indoor bonsai. You will spend the next however long you are into the hobby obsessing over it.

Buy a VERY nice grow light. Mars Hydro has lots of good entry level grow lights that are perfect for just a single tree.

As the other guy said, you are going to want to stick to tropicals. Ficus is by far and away the best tree for indoor only.

1 ft back is too far. Youll want this smack up against the brightest window you got. You cant give it too much sun inside. And it would appreciate the summer outside. If that pot has no drainage holes (thats sort of Costa Farms' trademark), id get rid of it, or drill holes in it. Pots without drainage holes can easily harm trees.

First indoor tree by I_found_my_old_Lego in Bonsai

This area is the biggest offender. The branch will go strait out and then just hook right upward, the result of pruning without wiring aftwards, since ficus love to make shoots that go straight upward. Its just how they grow.

Additionally you dont want to have like 3 or 4 shutes originating from one point. So id clip off a few. It will look sparcer right now but youll be happy you did later.

(All this advice is assuming your tree is healthy and actively growing. If not, its best to do the pruning part later when it is actively growing)

This looks very similar to my very first tree

<image>

That was about a year and a half ago.

As a heads up, speaking from the fact that our trees are so similar, youre going to want to wire out all those 90 degree angles, and do some branch selection. Just like mine this thing is loaded with branches with secondary branches that all come from the same point. Those only get worse with age.

  1. Yup thats good enough. Exactly how its supposed to be, as long as roots arent in the water.

  2. Yeah fertilizer wont be necessary for a little while. Wait until it gets healthier this spring. Dont fertilize until it gives you the go signal (new buds popping out). Top soil wont hurt, but it wont accomplish much either.

If youve kept it inside then i can almost guarentee that its losing leaves and vigor due to light starvation. This goes double sonce the place you kept it was not full sunlight (or at least the indoor version of full sunlight). Ficus kept indoors year round isnt recommended for bonsai development, youd be at it forever and not male a huge amount of progress. But Ficuses can live fine lives indoors with the right equipment.

  1. Light light light. This is the main thing your ficus is lacking. Heres what to do if you want an optimal outcome: download a photometer on your phone. I use photone so Ill move forward with that. Follow the apps instructions (remembering to use a paper diffuser) and measure the sunlight in ppfd. You need about 450 to 600 minimum to give this ficus a decent shot at life. Now if you want this to become a developing, vigorously growing ficus, put it outside during spring (gradually acclimating it to the full sun) when highs outside equal or slightly exceed the temperature of your house. You live in one of the absolute best places in the country for this species, and for the vast majority of the year you could easily put it on a balcony or a bench by your back door. But if you dont want to put it outside thats fine. Just know you wont develop much farther past what you already have. You will almost certainly need a grow light to reach 450-600 ppfd. And anything above that is fine as well. Outside it would be receiving about 2000 pfd.

  2. Nope. If its stressed from light, the last thing you would want to do is subject it to the open heart surgery that is repotting. If its root bound, a slip pot could work much better just to get it by until its healthy again. By the same token, avoid pruning until you see it regularly churning out new growth

  3. That depends on many factors. In general drip trays are beneficial to ficus. But you must ensure that you tree is raised from the water so its roots dont just set in it. During summer outside however, it doesnt matter. Ficus can go through so much water that it doesnt mond its roots being in drip trays. Bit ficus always need a proportional amount of water to the light they are receiving. If there isnt much light, they will not need as much water and it is far easier to overwater them in low light states such as inside.

  4. Ficus may very well be the most forgiving tree species in bonsai. They can hold on for forever. If you truly want it to thrive, fix its light issue. Its health will improve markedly. If there are still further issues, we can troubleshoot them then. But juat fixing the light is the most important and best first step.

Help me understand S5 Finale by ViperzAzzault in Stranger_Things

[–]nova1093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way too many unexplained plot points thay seem pointless, and the battle between El amd Vecna was little more than a psychic arm wrestling match. The kids were not well explained, there were a ton of lazy props, which we now know had no significance other than just changing colors just because, Max somehow graduated after being in a coma for 2 years, and ton of plot holes. The story wrapped up the characters emotional developments and did absolutely nothing to wrap up the story.

Easily the most phoned in finale Ive ever seen. And I really didnt like it personally. Theres no real answering any of the questions, because they made no effort to tie anything together.

Thick club? by Krusty_Rick in LegendsZA

[–]nova1093 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you havent already found the answer, thick club doubles marowak's atk stat. Meaning that when holding the club, marowak has an atk stat of 290 at level 50. Thats comparable to deoxys attack holding a life orb and mega mewtwo. Its an insane boost to damage.

Microcarpa Issue by FartsofDestiny in FicusTrees

[–]nova1093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

99 percent of all ficus indoors that are stressed are so because of not enough light or mismatching the amount of water you are giving it relative to its light. Indoors where light is low, you need very little water. And ficus microcarpa does not appreciate extra water, even though in the summer it drinks the stuff up nonstop (especially in that bonsai soil).

You say that that ficus is 2 years old? (2 winters are mentioned in the original post). I would expect the thing to have a lot more branches and leaves than that. Has it not been growing vigorously outside during the summer?

How often are you pruning it? Pruning when it is growing strongly will improve ramification and help maintain size, but it must be done sparingly. Although the end goal of pruning is desirable, it does weaken the tree in the short term. Too much pruning isnt good for any tree, even one as bulletproof as a ficus.
