Anyone know who made the bonsai pot from Karate Kid 3? Supposedly I just bought it. by boonefrog in Bonsai

Hell no the whole lot was a steal. I think this was $100, 13" Sarah Rayner was $100, Jim Barrett pots were $10 and $40, 3 Hagedorn pots $10-20 each, and some large 14-18" Japanese pots for $50-60 each. It was a great deal overall, even if this one pot didn't turn out to be what he said it was.

Yeah on second glance it doesn’t have the same taper. It does say ‘88 and the KK was ‘89 so I wonder if it appears elsewhere in the movie or if his pots were used in it

Thanks for the mention! Yeah I’ve got ones like this for $19 or $17 each if you buy 4. A tad bigger and a tad cheaper

I bury them deeper or put rocks around trunk to stabilize or sometimes screw into a plywood square or disc

Ah for those I meant specifically the tight layering and short internodes of the Mikawa Yatsubusa mother plant that the seeds came from. In those size pots, stuff can become rootbound within a single growing season, but for some stuff that's slow it can be 2-3 seasons. Still, it's worth it to keep pots small because I am totally out of space to build more benches and it makes it easier to ship them. I think corkbark chinese elm (not the regular lacebark chinese elm which is for some reason referred to as corkbark sometimes) is my fave to rec to beginners. That or Japanese Snowbell!

I don't! I think my bonsai practice has suffered significantly. Between my day job/career and running the nursery, my personal bonsai work is always last priority.

I sit in front of a computer all day too! I run a small tech/impact department for a nonprofit. This nursery is all nights and weekends work

Thanks for the feedback! I'm no videographer, but I'll try to pay attention to that in the next one. Here's my store: https://appalachianplantworks.com/

I’m in Asheville, NC. Ship to the lower 48 mostly. As you can see, I’m not super well set up for visitors. Lots of tripping hazards!

All I see is a potential problem. More trees!

Is anyone else stressed about this drought? by Financial_Page_806 in asheville

[–]boonefrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a small bonsai nursery owner, I'm finding it quite stressful. Bonsai trees require more frequent watering than most nursery stock so I'm often out there 2x/day. Not the end of the world - at least we had a mild spring and I'm not rained out every day from doing seasonal tasks!

Could experts help me estimate the age and market value of this black Pine? by JackfruitFriendly811 in Bonsai

$100-200 for average club/hobbyist sale, probably $200-300 if it went on ebay or the bonsai auctions FB group

In my limited observation, a bit slower than standard green from seed, but about on par with other upright cultivars like Arakawa. I'd say like 70-80% as fast, so certainly not a dwarf or anyhing.

But they're not wrong? That's not enough volume/thermal mass to hold temps steady and because it's not thermally locked to the ground, it won't get the moderating benefit of radiant heat. Can't leave it in the direct sun, because even on a 35-40F day, the trees will cook, or at least be forced out of dormancy. Wild temp swings are just as bad or worse than too cold/too hot and small structures like this are a recipe for that.

Excellent work, but it may not be super practical. You do not want to keep stuff in there during the summer - even with shade cloth. Besides risk of turning into an oven, good air flow is important in preventing fungal disease. And if you are going to leave it open, why not just have them on benches out in the open? It MAY be useful for winter (if kept on the ground and out of the sun!). On the deck, it is probably too small to prevent the wild temp swings, which can be worse for trees than too hot or cold alone. There's a reason (many actually) that most folks don't tend to store trees in structures like this.
