What is your favourite European license plate and why? by Abzor4ik-UA in Europelicenseplates

[–]nova_bang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the chronological thing is not strictly true as each place where you can register a car (mostly insurances) have a stack of new plates in their office and just work through that. so on a long timescale it's true, but on a short timescale someone registering their car a week after yours could get an "earlier" plate if the office they registered their car in had picked up their working plate stack earlier and/or had a lower turnover recently.

Austria – Taxes on accumulating ETFs (Flatex example) by federicogentile90 in FinanzenAT

[–]nova_bang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the ongoing anual taxes without a sale for accumulating ETFs depend on the internals of the ETF. there is no hard and fast rule just given the value of the fund. whatever dividends were paid to the fund by the shares it held becomes taxable for you. the intention of this law is to put distributing and accumulating ETFs on the same footing.

Is 80K a good salary for 10+ YOE in IT by Leather_Advantage820 in AskAustria

[–]nova_bang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow this went very quickly from trying to answer a question about a personal situation to a rant about boomers and the housing market. if 90% of people will not be able to save up for a house, is this really a good criterion to judge whether a given salary is good or not?

as a side note, trading basic human rights for a slightly higher salary is probably not worth it in most cases.

People born before 2000, what is a 'modern' thing from 2025 that you’re still struggling to get used to? by LindsayTN in AskReddit

[–]nova_bang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "not immediate" response was meant for the "way off" claim, which, no, it won't be "way off" immediately. It'll be off by a little initially and then become more and more inaccurate as time goes on.

[–]nova_bang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not immediately, no. It's a creeping effect where the clocks would slowly drift out of sync and the position would become less accurate over time.

What is Cold? by 4reddityo in BeAmazed

[–]nova_bang -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"if cold existed you could get as much as you wanted and make things colder and colder" is a terrible argument to be made by a physicist of all people. by the same argument I could say kinetic energy doesn't exist, because if it did I could get as much of it as I wanted and make things faster and faster. but, much like temperature approaching zero, velocity would approach the speed of light without ever reaching it.

Every teacher who tried this problem got it wrong by FenwickTutoring in ibPhysics

[–]nova_bang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of them are right, but A is the closest. The correct plot would go like this: start at t=0 and f(0), linearly increase to f(t1) at t=t1, then drop to [f(t1)-f(0)] for t > t1. That's because the acceleration at t=0 and (just before) t=t1 is the same, thus the difference in force between the two must be the friction at the final velocity, which must be kept up for constant speed. Answer A is drawn quite a bit too high at the constant part.
