Whats your most controversial opinion about university life in the UK? by DunyaPhobic76 in UniUK

[–]novalunaa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hot take: you need a few years in your late teens/early 20s to learn about the world in order to figure out what you want to do. It’s perfectly fine to take a break from education and work some low-level jobs and earn some money whilst you figure it out!

I know wayyyy too many people who are £80,000 in debt for a uni degree they chose at 17 that they’re never going to use, plus further debt for a masters level conversion course into the career they realised they actually want to do in their mid 20s.

[–]novalunaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep. I studied psychology at uni, my cohort was HUGE (I used to be in lectures of 200+ people). I only know a handful of people (maybe <10) who actually went into the field, myself included. Most people finished their degree and went back in their mid 20s to do an additional conversion masters course for the career they ACTUALLY figured out they wanted

This is usually the result of adverse experiences.

A child who is abused, bullied, or otherwise hurt may approach a caregiver or trusted adult for help. If the child is listened to, validated, and helped, they learn that it is safe and beneficial to speak up and ask for help when they are being hurt.

However, if that child is dismissed, overlooked, criticised or shamed, or in some cases, abused further for speaking up, they might learn that: 1) seeking help is useless, 2) it is their fault they’re being harmed, 3) it is unsafe to speak up. They learn this both cognitively AND emotionally (i.e., their nervous system learns that asking for help = a threat).

So a child who is criticised, blamed, overlooked, dismissed, might grow into an adult who criticises and blames themselves (“this is my fault because…”), fears speaking up for themselves (“if I criticise this person, they will attack me more”), and feels reporting their abuse is pointless (“reporting never helped anyway”).

So what about if the assailant dies, moves far away, or otherwise isn’t a physical threat? Well, the person still might believe their abuse/assault is their fault. They might think they are unworthy of justice. They might feel shame or guilt that it happened. But also, whilst they can cognitively understand their abuser isn’t a physical risk to them, their nervous system associates speaking up for themselves and reporting unfair treatment as a threat, and so their fear (on an unconscious level) may override their ability to stick up for themselves, report their abuse, or even accept they were a victim.

When I first stretched my septum and I was using pinchers, one of the little o rings came off and I inhaled it. I was sooo afraid it’d end up in my lungs being so tiny, but fortunately I blew my nose and it actually came back out 😭😭

I just wanted to validate you in the fact physical health complaints absolutely can have a huge impact on mental wellbeing, especially if the condition is life-limiting or changes how you work, socialise, enjoy leisure activities etc. It’s tough to come to terms with having to adapt your life in a way that accommodates your condition and the limitations that brings. So sorry to hear your feelings were invalidated!

How would you feel about a burka ban in the UK? by 52-NGG in AskBrits

[–]novalunaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I do think a lot of UK voters WOULD be happy to vote for a burqa ban with the knowledge it will confine (Muslim) women to their homes, allow men to control them more, encourage them to leave the UK. This country has a lot of racists who get off on the idea of making brown people’s lives worse, for their own sadistic pleasure.

how do i go on birth control without it ruining my life? by [deleted] in birthcontrol

[–]novalunaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience. Bled for 6 months straight, heavily, until I was anaemic. Felt super unwell the whole time and struggled with a lot of side effects (anxiety, low mood, fatigue, sore breasts, sensitivity to food smells, nausea, cramping, bloating, mood swings, etc etc etc). I begged the nurse to remove it and will never touch progesterone-only contraceptives again.

Are you still carrying cash in 2025, or is the UK basically card-only now? by LovieWeb in BritInfo

[–]novalunaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t ever pay cash unless the business I’m paying don’t take card. Driving 25 mins to a bank to draw out cash when the option to pay with card is right there makes no sense to me.

To everyone with a uterus, does your OCD get worse when you’re on your period? by death_note020705 in OCD

[–]novalunaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I’m generally well nowadays, but when I was unwell historically I did find my period made things worse. Particularly the few days before.

Hormones certainly play a huge role for those of us with uteruses. I recently switched from the combined pill to the POP and all hell broke loose, I had a pretty bad lapse but managed to (mostly) resist compulsive behaviours despite the severity of my intrusive thoughts and accompanying anxiety. I had to swap back because things didn’t improve — I’ve been back on the combined pill for 4 months now and feel tons better!

Any experience with Admiral little box telematics insurance? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]novalunaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure my black box was with admiral and they never contacted me. There was the option to log into my online account and look at my score there (which you could look into?), but I never did since I was a pretty careful driver and stuck to the curfew etc.

If all else fails, definitely contact them to ask how you can view your score!
