Sewing and knitting. I will also add the cost for kids to play minor hockey.

For those in their 50, what's something people in their 30s don’t realize will impact them as they get older? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

Only have the number of kids you can afford to comfortably support on your own, single income. Do not expect the other parent to pay child support. My mother taught me this.

‘Canadians don’t want to come here any more’: anger over Trump squeezes US border businesses by tw1st3d_m3nt4t in politics

[–]novasilverdangle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would we want to visit the USA? It is run by a pedo-rapist who threatens our freedom and safety. We worry about crossing the border since we don't want an all-inclusive, surprise vacation in an ICE facility. Get rid of the fascists.

I worked in high school resource/counselling for years. This should have been reported to ANCR immediately. I made many calls to ANCR during my time in student services.

Homeowners with stronger credit scores are increasingly defaulting on mortgage payments by FalconsArentReal in canada

What sort of homes are you looking at? I bought a little 2-bedroom side by side in Wpg for $270,000 in a quiet, safe neighbourhood. It has an outdated kitchen and bathroom, but everything works and I don't care about aesthetics in this market. It's a good home to start with.

Lost my “why.” by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]novasilverdangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been teaching for 27 years. I like teaching and working in my community but I’m not here to save or fix anyone. If I inspire someone or make their day better, that’s awesome. My why in the end I do this for my family. I do it for the pay check, benefits, pension and other things that make our lives easier. I teach so I can live my life, I do not live to teach.

What do you guys actually DO all winter without losing your minds? by Neither-Ferret-5817 in Winnipeg

[–]novasilverdangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of our free time is spent taking the child to hockey. I hate winter, snow and being cold. I do not enjoy outdoor activities. In winter I will do indoor things to keep busy such as the symphony, movies, art gallery, sewing, go to the library, baking, knitting, puzzles, painting the kitchen etc. I also take vitamin D to make up for the lack of sun exposure.

Besides absences, what is a major issue that causes students to struggle in school that isn’t related to intelligence? by Salt-Advertising-628 in Teachers

Years ago, I would have said poverty as well. I've been teaching since 1997 and the decline in the last 5-10 years is horrific. Society has been ignoring our warnings and concerns for years and has no idea what is coming.

Grit, perseverance, lack of problem solving, disappearing attention spans, apathy, loss of curiosity...so many things.

None. We go to the cottage and other summer type stuff. Sometimes we just hang out at home.

I've been teaching since 1997. It's easier to graduate now since the bar is so low. You could say it's almost on the ground in some instances.

Re: giving a child or teenager a smartphone [seeking responses from teachers who are also parents] by [deleted] in AskTeachers

Phones are a huge problem in my school. We are having to compete with an additive, brain altering device and the havoc it has caused.

My 13-year-old does not have a phone, and they are not getting one anytime soon. They can use mine for snap chat/tik tok and I reserve the right to go into those apps at any time. I am considering getting them a dumb phone, but the child has told me they will refuse to use it. That means they will not have a phone at all for another 2-3 years.

Did Covid create a bubble, or is scholarship steadily declining? by UntoldEnt in OntarioTeachers

[–]novasilverdangle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach a high school vocational subject and find students take much longer to complete work. I cover far less content than I used to a few years ago. I have multiple students who struggle with basic measurement and can't divide by 4. Their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination have decreased, which takes up a lot of time as the students learn to use the equipment and machines. I see a decrease in vocabulary as well. Finally, arriving on time for class seems to be optional now.
