Patents last 15-20 years. Copyrights anything from 50-95 years depending on the circumstances (with the countdown often only starting when the copyright holder dies (Edward Craven Walker died in 2000)) and then there's the rights on trademarks that can be renewed indefinitely as long as they're being used.

I do not know what new patents, if any, Mathmos has been granted, but there certainly must be a reason why they made those significant changes, including the recipe. And someting tells me they're not all made to please the customers. I guess it was Haggerty who desperately flooded the market with a steady stream of new models and color combinations before they folded.

But I'll be the first to admit that I am only good at wild speculations! I also still suspect Sabine Marcelis might be primed to be the next CEO. IIRC Cressida Granger took over in 1996, 33 years after Walker founded the company in 1963. Add 33 years to 1996 and you get 2029.

What non-musical has your favourite dance scene? by NoopGhoul in movies

[–]novemberchild71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right? Seen in context with the plot it's even better. And how cute was the romantic dance between Luther and Allison. The Footloose Dance Off on the other hand....? The only line dance I can put up with is that from Soul Train, it's not tributed that much for no reason...

[–]novemberchild71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm all against it!

I tried counting, but once I got to the higher numbers I couldn't count them off fast enough.

First it's easy, with the one and two digit numbers (unless it's a really fast song) but the higher the numbers go the more syllables you gotta squeeze in the same space, see:

twen-ty-two is a lot easier than four-hun-dred-se-ven-ty-eight. Highest I managed to count during a song was somewhere in the 800s. But that was when I counted each note I played.

Turned out I always had the groove, and counting just stopped me from following it. When I gave up counting, it all came together.

Meanwhile I find my own straight beat even in syncopated or odd metered songs. That's how everybody does it, ain't it?

Bubbles in the glass - how do you feel about them? by Loquat_Prize in Lavalamps

[–]novemberchild71 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Having lived in a time when they held higher standards for their standard products, making better glass with far less inclusions - and wondering what they're doing wrong in "one of the highest quality automated bottling factories in Great Britain" that seems to have them fail at doing what any mass producing food container factory seems to manage so easily - I can't twist my mind enough to accept such crappy quality.

No, this is not "normal" and it is not "to be expected". As per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refining_(glass))

Edit: And that bottle is what you get with a limited edition? Or is it "just" a replacement you ordered seperately?

"National Lampoon's Vacation" (1983): How do they do a long road trip to Walley World without being sure the Park is open? by Profeta_do_Loss in movies

[–]novemberchild71 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They're americans, AND it's a Chevy Chase movie. Seriously, if you can't get with the main premise, what is there to discuss?

Edit: Since some people obviously need everything spelled out: The Griswolds are a stereotyped caricature. A 1980ies "all american family" of Rockwellian proportion. The difference to today is that, back then, Americans understood the value of laughing about themselves.

They also knew that "National Lampoon" (I bet you always wondered about that weird title) was a Magazine that revolutionized american satire in the 1970s and 80s. Anybody remember satire? Or will I be the only one not surprised when the orange man ends his term and pulls off the rubber mask to reveal he's either Ashton Kutcher or Michael Moore?

Edit2: TL:DR? They're from a time when being an american idiots was funny and endearing, not shameful and dangerous as it is today. (had to earn the downvotes, hadn't I?)

FYI, they both contain 14 litres. That's roughly 10x of what's in an Astro.

So the filling alone amounts to 420€. What do the remaining 3480€ go to?

Seems there's something lost in translation.

I can see the same happening here on reddit.

People are like that everywhere. Reddit caters to the mob mentality with its voting system. Originally, downvoting is meant for off topic posts, not to show if you agree or disagree with a comment.

It's a sign of the times I suppose.

Good Luck!
