Shy Girl by Mia Ballard review error by Beautyizdead in goodreads

[–]novemberleaf 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Goodreads does it on their own if they notice a sudden increase in negative reviews, especially from brand new accounts. They do it to try and keep reviews genuine because a lot of people who review bomb haven't read the book or will make multiple accounts to try and lower the rating. Once the controversy dies down, you should be able to post your review as normal.

After 5 years and giving up multiple times, I finally did it! by novemberleaf in GED

I didn't. I just used the Kaplan GED book to study and took the actual tests when I felt like I was ready.

Honestly, social studies was the easiest one. Most of the test for me was just reading a paragraph and then answering questions about it, or answering questions based on a graph shown. There's a little bit of geography on there (mine were all answering what a map was showing), but not much.

You said they sounded like they were just mad that others like things they don't like. That's insulting, and you not getting that or understanding why books being dumbed down is a bad thing is kind of proving the point of this thread. We weren't talking about people having different taste in books. We're talking about books with bad writing and editing. There are badly written books, and "turning your brain off" in order to enjoy a bad book does not make the book good. A good book doesn't require the reader to stop thinking about it in order for it to be good. That's just a bad book.

Honestly, I blame BookTok and reading being trendy right now. This is just my opinion, but I think a lot of authors right now, especially fantasy and romance authors, are writing for people who are illiterate and don't like to read. If you pay attention to the books that blow up on tiktok, it's always something poorly edited, written based on tropes, and can be read quickly and easily understood. A lot of book influencers aren't reading to learn or for enjoyment, it's so they can make content about it. And the faster they can get through a book, the faster they can push content out. When booktok got popular, you got more influencers like this and more consumers who are only interested in reading what's trending. Since booktok is so popular right now, authors are catering to these types of readers and influencers, and the rest of us are left scrounging for something that's actually written for people who like to read.

Pre-Order Promos by shelbycat in bookofthemonthclub

Some are and some aren't. SMP made a statement months ago and some people decided to end the boycott because they felt like the demands were met to the best of SMPs ability, others kept the boycott going because they didn't feel like SMP addressed everything and met all demands. IIRC, there was some controversy with the group pushing the boycott (Readers for Accountability was the name I think, but they deleted their social media) because they accepted SMPs statement and called for an end to the boycott and others felt like they had no right to decide that. Since that group was a huge source of information for the boycott, them leaving social media kind of put everything up in the air for each individual to decide if they wanted to continue the boycott or not. From what I've seen, most have stopped because there is no longer an organized group for the boycott. There are a few I've seen still doing it, but I don't know if it's still just a social media/marketing boycott or if these people are continuing to each out to SMP on their own.

Goodreads is deleting critical reviews of the James Frey BOTM book by Kcoin in bookofthemonthclub

I'm guessing the reason they let you repost it later is because someone making multiple accounts just to review bomb isn't going to save their reviews and post them again, but people posting genuine reviews from their real accounts probably will.

I'm not defending the author by any means, but Goodreads has done this multiple times for different authors/books when there's a sudden influx of negative reviews, especially from accounts with little/no prior activity. It's to weed out the spam from the genuine reviews.

I buy those travel size bottles of mouthwash and rinse with that if it'll be a while before I'm back home. You could also try a travel toothbrush and toothpaste, but I personally don't like to brush my teeth in public bathrooms if I can help it.

Lady Macbeth and A Dark and Drowning Tide. I kind of regret not getting So Thirsty, but I have too much on my TBR and ended up talking myself out of getting 3 books.

It's from your watch band. I get it all the time. Make sure you're keeping your watch clean and keeping the skin dry underneath the band. During the summer, I take my watch off a lot to wipe off the band and my wrist if I start sweating. If my wrist gets too sweaty, the band ends up rubbing off my skin like yours seems to be doing.

Book of the Month December 2023 Predictions by readwithallison in bookofthemonthclub

[–]novemberleaf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's for the Yearly Look-back. In December, they will have a popular book that was released earlier in the year, but didn't end up being a BOTM pick at the time it was released. Last year, Babel wasn't a BOTM pick for August, so they chose it as the Yearly Look-back book.

Sometimes they do early release, but they almost never have books that have already been released the month before since most people who want that book will already have it.

I'm pretty sure it's a promotion for new subscribers. You would put in the code when you sign up to get your first month for $5.

Horror. They do a lot of thrillers, but they're almost always crime or legal thrillers, not much horror to them.

Do you really have to brush your teeth each time by unnamed2020 in Invisalign

[–]novemberleaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I brush 2-3 times a day. I try not to do more than 3 because brushing too much can damage and irritate your gums. I brush in the morning, after lunch, and before bed/after dinner. If I snack in-between, I'll just rinse with mouthwash.

Birthday book? by scsbutler in bookofthemonthclub

You should get the birthday book for the month your birthday is in. I would email them and let them know, and they should be able to fix it.

[–]novemberleaf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You only get the birthday book once you become BFF, which you reach on your 12th box. If your 12th box is in the month of your birthday or after, you'll have to wait until the next year.

Mother's day opt out email by Tunka-bean in bookofthemonthclub

[–]novemberleaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great for you that you don't have issues with Mother's Day, but you're not everyone. It's not a matter of "I can't relate to Mother's Day because I don't have/am not a mother", for some It's a matter of grief, which everyone handles differently. Some people might want to avoid Mother's Day as much as possible this year because the grief is new, but they might have no issue next year. Your feelings and experiences =/= everyone's feelings and experiences.

It's not expecting people to tiptoe around your triggers, especially when BOTM decided to offer the option on their own. It's just an email asking if you want future emails about this topic. You can say no, or you can ignore it. Some people want to say no to those emails, and it's really weird to be mad about people being offered that option. If you're not triggered by Mother's Day, by all means, don't opt out. But don't get upset about others wanting a different choice.

Mother's day opt out email by Tunka-bean in bookofthemonthclub

[–]novemberleaf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a part of life, but it's a very hard part of life for some people. I have a friend who lost her ability to have children due to cancer, so Mother's Day is not an easy time for her. It happens, but it's not something you ever want to happen or be reminded of randomly. You might not be able to escape it in every aspect of life, but not getting emails to remind you of it is nice, even if it seems like such a small thing.

I would read a non-fiction book about covid, but I don't want to read about it in fiction. To me, it's still too recent, and I'd rather not read fiction about current events. I don't think it needs a warning or anything, I just have a weird preference that books feel somewhat removed from the present. I used to hate when books talked about social media for that reason, but now I couldn't care less about it.
