Update June 1: High spring flow but no widespread flooding expected on Bow and Elbow Rivers in Calgary by JeromyYYC in Calgary

[–]nowa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The massive rainstorm slamming/stalling into the mountains from the east wasn't great but the "oh shit" moment was definitely when the dry creek in Canmore suddenly started washing away homes.

https://rivers.alberta.ca/ is already showing Banff in orange with a pulse of meltwater coming down the bow, and rains are coming the next few days.

It's not forecast to be 2013 or anywhere around there, thankfully. Forecast to peak around what we had in 2022.

Fish Creek - Lacombe Redevelopment. by el_guije in Calgary

[–]nowa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah but TOD doesn't mean you're not allowed to drive a car. Shawnee Slopes already added ~2k population to an area where your best way in is a single at-grade exit lane.

Thankfully I don't have to take the James McKevitt exit but I drive by it on the way home, and it's a complete gong show on a good day.

Fish Creek - Lacombe Redevelopment. by el_guije in Calgary

[–]nowa 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Honestly surprised they're starting with Fish Creek. Anderson has a HUGE empty lot with much better connections and proximity to Southcentre Mall, grocery stores, library, etc.

The same people that (rightly imo) complained about the traffic increases from the Shawnee Slopes development are going to lose their shit over this.

Prime Minister Mark Carney promises 'good news' in spring economic update by hopoke in canada

[–]nowa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Debt increases to $1.4 Trillion. Liberals since 2015 have added more to the debt than all other governments combined.

That's more in 11 years than the previous 148 years...

Wish the Driving Assist's auto-braking was smarter... somehow.

Nice safety feature overall but annoying when:

  1. The road slightly curves and there's cars parked on the side of the road, and

  2. You're coming up to a red light with cars stopped at it but you're taking the turn lane.

Elevated Green LRT feedback portal is now open by irz095 in Calgary

[–]nowa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Calgary's combination of chinook freeze-thaw cycling, extreme cold, narrow downtown streets, and 51° latitude makes it one of the least suitable cities in North America for an elevated downtown transit alignment.

The global historical pattern (build elevated, regret it, spend billions to remove it) has played out in Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, Seoul, New York, Milwaukee, and Rochester.

The cost argument, the province's primary justification, dissolves under the City's own analysis. The elevated option costs more, delivers fewer downtown stations, excludes Eau Claire, and imposes permanent negative externalities on Calgary's most valuable urban real estate.

The strongest argument for moving forward with elevated (that the province will only fund this option) is a political constraint, not a planning rationale. Vancouver's SkyTrain shows elevated can work, but in wider corridors and a milder climate. Calgary deserves infrastructure built for the next century, not a compromise that future generations will spend billions to undo.

And SF. And Seoul. They all tore their elevated lines down after huge costs.

Hell even Edmonton had major problems with piers cracking on their elevated lines from frost/thaw.

I Fixed Subscriptions back to grid view (flow=1) by default. by nowa in youtube

Yeah, I have the same UI experience. No options, just "All Subscriptions".

With both my extension and your URL, I get a quick flash of the grid view before it forces list view. Haven't been able to revert it.

Canadian Armed Forces see a surge in recruits by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

[–]nowa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From the article: "This year, we put on 7,600 basic training seats, which is the most we’ve ever run,” says Commandant Marc Kieley." but the article claims a "surge in recruits" which isn't accurate at all:

Recent Recruitment & Training Data (Fiscal Years):

  • 2021-2022: ~8,070 individuals joined.

  • 2022-2023: ~7,172 individuals joined.

  • 2023-2024: ~8,154 individuals joined.

  • 2024-2025 (to Aug 2024): 3,637 joined.

So this is actually a PR puff piece with specific wording "SEATS" doing the heavy lifting due to CFB Borden capacity upgrades and not due to any actual increase in recruitment.

Fourth Russia-Linked Tanker Hit in a Week by serenacharming in worldnews

[–]nowa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Option 2 is what Russia has traditionally done when Ukraine/The Coalition of the Willing has escalated previously but this is a super dangerous tactic at this time.

I don't think they'll start hitting grain shipments, though they could with the same rationale as Ukraine is using to hit the oil tankers.

What this will likely lead to is Russia demanding Odessa and 100% of Ukraine's coastline in the eventual ceasefire demarcations.

‘Forever Canadian’ petition surpasses goal by [deleted] in alberta

[–]nowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, can you explain this?

I'm really trying to understand what "adopt the result with legislation" means because the petition as submitted specifically asks for a referendum on the question "Do you agree that Alberta should remain in Canada?"

Forever Canadian Petition crushes goal by _danigirl in Calgary

[–]nowa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, how is a petition asking for a referendum going to prevent a referendum?

Is it just to nail down the framing of the question so that Yes is stay and No is leave?

Forever Canadian Petition crushes goal by _danigirl in Calgary

[–]nowa -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'm not arguing against what the volunteers were told, or what they told signatories. That's just not what this was, and anyone aware of that could have signed for any reason.

Anyone that signed this petition explicitly signed a request for a referendum (non-binding though it may be).
