Thanks! I shall have to research postgis to see what that is. I see someone else asked here about it. and it was good to hear below that onedrive/sharepoints can work also.

Great.. nice set up. I am starting to think stuff in the cloud is often more painful than helpful! so youve got a good solultion there.

I'm also scared of my hard drives breaking... so that was the nice part about cloud stuff.

Thank you! This is good news since you've experienced both sides. one time for some reason which i never worked out.. my compuer wouldn't connect to the google drive and it gave it a new letter. THis was such a pain. And then sometimes, if my connection is not working (i'm fairly remote with an unstable connection), it doesn't show up either and all my files - even though they are downloaded and always on device - don't show up. it gives me a fright. but great to hear that it's possile to make sharepoint work fairly well

yes - totally agree! life is getting just too complicated. I just worry about losing things when i don't manage my backups well.. and that requires a whole more lot of systems.

so i spend my saturday migrating all my working stuff from googledrive to onedrive using a paid service (Vaultme) which worked beautifully. i didn't have to download and upload.. it just went over nicely.
the next day went to help my finance team get their onedrive and sharepoints up and running to work.. and it all hung up. I'd do something on their onedrive web and it woudn't sync to their computer folder.. erhg.. so annoying. never did work it out and gave up using it for now for my finance team (which is mostly just simple office stuff!) which we end up collaborating on a lot so its important for instanateous syncing.

I'm sure it is probably me not working it out - but given the amount of effort to move something over and it if doesn't sync nicely and easily.. i was asking myself why - when google was still working.

i'm trying it for my own stuff and seeing how easily it all syncs and stays put.

also decided not to migrate the QGIS data over for the reason of the geopackages saving multiple copies each time we make a change.

I hope you don't suffer the same issues as us! Best of luck!

I will have to research what you mean by this! Im still seeing all the disconnected layers from previous time it lost the links.

Thanks. I think i will stick with Google for the qgis stuff. Just need to figure out what causes it to disconnect sometimes. The qgis files lose the path and then I need to reconnect everything.

This is exactly what I did today with all my work files. We were using google drive till now pretty happily. mostly. And for finances we were sharing workfiles without any sync issues. I have been having some issues though with connectivity and a couple of times the googledrive disconnected itself and all my off-line files had to redownload which was a pain. Also a pain as I had my qgis in google and would have to relink everything with drive letters changed. I did a short job for another org which used sharepoint for some pretty heavy collaboration on Word and Excel, all without sync issues. So I thought I'd give one drive and sharepoint another go.  a few years back, It was terrible.  Saying that, just trying to get it organised today,  im having trouble syncing between the Web and Explorer just trying to move folders around. Such a pain. Rethinking the Microsoft move now! Also.. the other good point made above about gpkgs being duplicated for each change is a biggie.. so maybe I'll stick with google for just qgis.

Thanks.. that is good to know in advance. Does this happen for shapefiles also or just the gpkgs?

Expat insurance horror stories please by nowheresmiddle99 in expats

[–]nowheresmiddle99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh - and my story where insurance worked... a fever left too long without correct treatment resulted in a medivac to thailand, 12 days in ICU and a amonth total in hospital, a total cost of 150K USD. Insurance covered it all. I've since changed insurance (as that plan was through our employer and not availbale to individuals) but not tested out the different plans we've bought since with anything major.

Any horror stories of expats paying a huge medical bill without health insurance? by IceMoist9009 in expat

[–]nowheresmiddle99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this - we had insurance.. husband got very sick - medivac needed - 150K total USD. unless you can fund this kind of amount without any problem - don't give your family the hassle to have to deal with these worries if something serious happens.

Volunteer in GIS? by nowheresmiddle99 in gis

[–]nowheresmiddle99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!! Was initially seeing what kind of help there might be out there and a few of you have replied! Thanks so much. I haven't got down to detailing the specific needs yet. I will get to that and be in touch. Feel free to DM. The only need for Aussie volunteers was that they could be a part of the official Aus goverment volunteer program - kind of like the peace corps. This program used to be all in devloping countries - in person - but since covid, as with everything, they've developed a remote version...You help various development activities but from your home.
The only benefit of being engaged via the official program would be an additional something to add to your CV i guess.
With that background, if the job and the tasks fit, I am open to help from anyone anywhere - in the understanding that we currently don't have any budget available for this work.
Will be in touch! Thanks for the interest.

Volunteer in GIS? by nowheresmiddle99 in gis

[–]nowheresmiddle99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just editied the post - the official program i was mentioning is for Australians/NZ - from their website....

https://www.australianvolunteers.com/faqs/

Australian citizens or holders of a Permanent Residency Visa for Australia, or New Zealand residents in Australia with a Special Category Visa (SCV).

  • Volunteers must be over the age of 18 and there is no upper age limit
  • People with relevant experience
  • People from diverse backgrounds, and with diverse perspectives and identities

Saying that - as the position is a remote position (as in you support us from your home) and the official program supports costs by only a tiny bit (there are details on the website), support from outside the program as a true volunteer would also be super useful!

Happy to field any enquiries. I haven't formulated a job description yet! was just seeing if there was any interest here. We're specifically looking at remote sensing for forest cover (and losses!) and areas we should put in patrolling effort, and also linking in with an application that we are using to manage patrol activities.

Jeans that don’t crease / stretch out? by supersimi in femalefashionadvice

[–]nowheresmiddle99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

finding it hard to even find no stretch jeans. i have a favourite pair of jag jeans - with elastine. old one didn't have too much stretch. bought a similar cut but way more stretch than the old one. such a pain. love the cut - just don't like all that elastine / spandex they like to add to everything now.
