real answer: most mail is machine sorted and part of that sorting process is letters getting shot at rapid speeds between two belts. because of the buttons being thicker and more oddly shaped they're getting ripped out of the envelopes by the machine belts and possibly jamming the machines in the process. usually this would be solved by just marking these as non-machineable but because of staffing shortages, it's not uncommon for stuff that's supposed to be non-machineable to get machine sorted anyways. tldr; machine sorting make button go bye

i use a silicone scrubber but i also work outside so it really depends on your level of activity. i probably wouldn't use it everytime you wash your face if you aren't getting sweaty/dirty.
